**psst** Are you enjoying Scam School? You've gotta check out our *brand-new series* "The Modern Rogue" at ruclips.net/user/modernrogue. If you've seen it, reply and tell me what you think. If not, then get on over there. I'll bet you a dollar you love it. -Brian
Scam School How do you reply if someone tests you with this?!?
Scam School 2:14 u put a line on the first plus sign to make it a 4 and the expression is 545+5=550!

i have one such puzzle as well

OMG, I used to bingewatch Scam School videos when I was in middle school, now I’m in college! They still rock just like the Modern Rogue. Would you guys think about modernizing the iconic Scam School jingle and include it in Scam Nation? It’s so iconic and could be a great tribute!
Now that you're in college you can win yourself some beers

András Fogarasi it wasnt mid bet. he was explaining the rules
Logan Henry could u change the equal sign to a less than or equal sign
Draw a less than or equals sign. Done!
Logan Henry 19.9 repeated is technically correct but yeah
The first and third ones are fair. The second one is wrong because numbers and digits are two different things.
+draconitious | 5 is still a number, though.
You're right, 5 is a number but if you put two fives next to each other as separate numbers, what you're really doing is multiplying them.
draconitious | Yes, but this isn't meant to be a math problem, like he said. If I stuck two sticks in the shape of a T, I could very well call it a T. Would you argue that it's NOT a T, and rather will ALWAYS be two sticks, or that it has now become a T and will never be two sticks? It's both a T and two match sticks. Similarly, 55 is both the number 55, 5 * 5, and two 5's.
He should have said to use the same digit three times
+Shad K same number is a fair way of saying it. It needs some out of the box thinking to connect number to "any number" then to "digits". Same digit would give too much away plus it will strike suspicion because we don't usually say digits.
2019 and I am SO glad you've fixed your hair.

Reegareth Fancy seeing you here.
55 and 5 aren't the same number and a number wasn't used three times. He should have said digit technically.
as someone who is good at math it infuriates me when 55 and 5 are sold as 3 of the same number. digits and numbers aren't the same thing.
Jordan Power exactly. I still got both of them pretty easily, but he clearly got his terminology wrong.
i know what you mean but he explained it in his video. You just have to use the same number 3 times wich he did. He made a new number (55) but that number is just a combination of 2 seperate numbers. So in my opinion he is still right but i know what you mean, he could have put more stress on that fact
Neeeeerrrrrrd

This chick on the second one. Well 20 times 3 is 60. What else times 3 is 60? .......
Trevor Underwood 55 + 5 = 60
Not Trevor U Well, she had been drinking...
IsbjörnXII he said the same number, which was misleading, he could've said easilly "same digit"

Disregard comment, had smoked some forks.
IsbjörnXII Yeah, but i dont like puzzles, because lots of them are misleading to be harder. They feel like ciphers with misleding decipher keys.
Maybe this has already been asked and answered, but I've got another solution for the third question. 4 - 2 = 5 - 3
You are taking apart the plus sign to make two minus signs. He never says you can't do that.
Thumbs up this so Brian can see it and tell me how much of a fool I am.
when is these 2 symbols (plus and divide) a minus?
That made no sense. What are you trying to say?
The only symbols you can use is plus and divide
Or 5-4=3-2
for the last one, can you do it like this? 5=3+4/2
you could use one line in the first one to say 5 + 5 + 5 ≤ 550, just adding the second line for the less-than sign on the top. When I wrote this out the + signs were a lot smaller than the 5's so it didn't cross my mind to make one of them a 4
That's not an equation, though. That's an inequality.
@@TuringMachine001 didn't need to be an equation, just needed to be "totally true"
@@TotumheadGames You're right, I made a sloppy argument. But Brian mentioned you can't create a "different than" sign and that both sides have to be equal.
Nitpicking at puzzle #2,
He's NOT using the same number three times, he's using the same numeral three times. There's a difference. So he's technically not fulfilling the requirement stated.
However, 19.999... + 19.999... + 19.999... equals 60 - no party tricks required.
Marleen Why not just write
√400 + √400 + √400 = 60
Those are three of the same numbers and technically not 20.
Psychos Advocate No you don’t stop with three 9’s. The 9’s go on forever, which is the same as 20 because there can be no other number in between 19.999... and 20.
Psychos Advocate No you’re missing the point. It’s not about how many 9’s. The 9’s have to go on forever nonstop. 19.999999999999999999... (infinite more 9’s) is equal to 20.
Psychos Advocate But then you’ll be mathematically wrong. 19.99999999999 (with eleven 9’s) is a number of its own and is NOT equal to 20.
Psychos Advocate No, it doesn’t. Your calculator probably ran out of digits to show and rounded them up. Mathematically speaking, you’re wrong.

I would protest the second puzzle. There's a difference between three NUMBERS and three DIGITS. The instructions are inherently misleading.
bigjosh2517 and **I** would distract you from your protest by doing another trick and puzzle.
True, but the people figuring out the puzzle are drunk, so they don't know the difference.
bigjosh2517 That's kinda the point lol. It's all about misdirection. The show is called Scam School after all lol. Almost all math falls under the blanket of "real numbers". He used a blanket term of being specific.
bigjosh2517 Except it is socially acceptable to do that. People misuse the term "numbers" all the time, and that's why they fall for this. Once he started ramping about 3 numbers I figured that the trick had to be that he was actually meanining to use the same digit, and thus use something in the order of xx + x = 60
bigjosh2517 Dat is true but there is infinitly many soultions. You could add up the square root of 400 + the square root of 400 + the square root of 400, as well as the cube root of 8000 + the cube root of 8000 + cube root of 8000
actually you could use any nth root when the n is 20^n
It always aggravates me when people give up too easily on puzzles like this. They almost immediately just give up instead of actually grinding to figure it out or even asking the rules again.
Please do an updated maths puzzle one. Love these and the boys haven't gotten any of them yet
No lie, I figured out the second one in a matter of 10 seconds
patrick rivard well, then you surely solve problems in different way than the rest of us.
patrick rivard the same here, but the first one was difficult for me
+patrick rivard I solved the third one in about the same time
+patrick rivard That was the only one I didn't get, I got the other two in about that time.
+patrick rivard Same over here, 55+5 is 3 identical numbers
An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first orders a beer, the second orders half a beer, the third orders a quarter of a beer and so on. After the seventh order, the bartender says “You're all idiots.” and pours two beers.
Dude, you messed up the punchline! The bartender says, "You guys ought to know your limits." XD
i dont get it? why not give the guy his 1/64 of a beer?
+Swagster Sixty-Eight It's referring to power series. 1 + (1/2) + (1/4) + ... + (1/2)^n as n→∞ is 2.

Brian the hedgehog back at it again with those sick spikes
You kinda cheated on the 2nd one. The rules were use 3 of the same numbers. 55 and 5 are two different numbers. You used 3 of the same digits. A digit and a number are not the same.
5 is also a number and hence the solution is valid since concatenation was not forbidden.
+Clostridium Kin
Number can be expressed as a string of numerals, thus concatenating two numbers yields another number.
Yeah, but if you say digits, they will immediatly get it.
The main issue with saying 'concatenation wasn't forbidden' is that most people don't even know about it, and would think it's simply cheating to 'join' two numerals together. In fact, I'd go as far to say concatenation was forbidden, as it's denoted as ||, but the guy says specifically "using only a plus sign, and one number three times". I'm pretty sure 5||5+5 doesn't count as using 'only' three of the same number and a plus sign.
Also, just out of curiosity, what order is the concatenation function get calculated in? would you need to place the (5||5) in brackets? Or would the concatenation occur first?
THANK YOU
Everyone involved misunderstandings by stupid and unclear rules. People try to solve the illogical way, then they do something that has no sense but that "was allowed" by the rules even if it wasn't clear it could be done.
5=2+3? I'm pretty sure he didn't say you have to use all the numbers for the last one
I got the last one:
32=4+5
Edit: I wrote the digit 3 squared
You can write that as 3^2 when you don't have the option of subscript
@@ouzoloves or 3²
@@IAmRedNez that 2 IS subscript

IzDeBeast Derpz 1?
Dammit, you're right!
54,321
IzDeBeast Derpz no is 54321 you fell for your own trick
But if 1 = 5
Then 5 = 1
Logic xD
the 2nd one is cheating, he said use 3 of the same number... he's using the number 55 and 5. saying thats using 3 of the same number is cheating...
My guess how to get it correct without cheating was 59 + 59/59 which does = 60. Really annoyed about how he did it.. blatant cheating
Melodube No, cheating is adding a division function when you were specifically told you only get the one plus. ಠ_ಠ
Melodube Not cheating, there are still 2 number 5s in 55
Joshua Williams No there isn't, 55 is one number, in between 54, and 56, it is not two numbers. Yes visually it looks like 5 and 5, but to use it in the equation, it must be used as the one number, fifty-five
Scam School hence why i said 'my guess was'. It's cheating. Not too fussed about it, ppl in africa dying so i wont waste too much energy on this lol
Melodube He said to look at it as symbols... people should just listen...
I haven't heard any of these before and I figured them all of them out immediately.
This was actually better than i expected
1: Q: 5 + 5 + 5 = 550
A: 5 4 5 + 5 = 550
4 isnt one line. The answer is that to draw a diagonal line across the equal sign.
asdas he drew a diagonal line onto one of the plus signs turning it into a number 4. you have to remember the premise that these are puzzles and not straight forward equations
Theres a third way to answer Q number 1. If you draw a line diagonaly to the equal sign, drawn over it you make it true
Carlos Lucas he said both sides will be equal if you draw one line. He also asked them to not do the "not equal sign" as a favor.
Death's Heir What he's explaining is not making a "Not equals" sign, it's making a "Less than or equals to" sign.
Their theme song is "Scam school meow meow" right?
uh...
no.
:-)
+Scam School But wat is it?
"Scam School, oh yeah"
Now that's all I hear XD
Just got a chance to see this and I will definitely be using these the next time out.
so, i tryed to use these against my math teacher, and i made him a deal. i said "im am gonna make three number problems, and if you can solve two out of the three of them, you can give us double homework and i wont complain at all, but if you give up on two or the three, you dont give me any homework." he agreed, because he likes these kind of bets, and i used your first and last one, but a different persons second one one. he got the first one, missed the second one, and then he looked at me and said "your not the only person in the world that watches Scam School." now i have double the homework the rest of my class had, so yay.
Didn't get the last one but the first two were easy. Also they left out a solution to the first one, you can use one line to change the equals sign into a less than or equal sign.
***** that's not completely true. The equality sign of "less than OR equal to" can either be less than or equal to the answer while still remaining true.
For the 5+5+5=550 one, there's another solution. You could add an extra line to the equals sign, making it an inequality reading 5+5+5 is less than or equal to 550
ugh. Why does everyone think they're the first person to think of drawing a line through the equals sign?
Scam School wasn't that suppose to mean you can't use "≠", because i was also thinking about the less than sign
Scam School You've taken it the wrong way. When I said add an extra line, it becomes
***** thats what i thought, but it seemed too obvious to be the actual answer
***** He said "It's a true expression, both sides will be equal". So using less than or equal is against the rules.
Thats why he won. He challenged people in a pub who were nearly drunk.
for the first puzzle, he said you can only use 1 "straight" line to work it out. and so i followed the idea of the straight line...
A straight line means not curved, not not at a diagonal.
5+5+5 is less than or equal to 550 (draw the one line on top of the equals sign to make an inequality sign)
**sigh**...
same thing came to my mind
He said that: Don't be like that one kid who drew a line over the equalsign and say they are superior
+Nickolay Wikestad Syversen He meant that in the form of a not equals sign, not an inequality ;)
2:06 "It's a true expression. Both sides will be equal if you just draw one line."
On the 2nd puzzle, he says using the same number 3 times. 55 & 5 are 2 numbers using the same DIGIT 3 times. 5 is a 1 digit number and 55 is a 2 digit number.
except with 20 20 20 + , 2 is a digit used 3 times and so it 0. so your theory doesnt work
Shadow Network but 20,20 and 20 is 3x the same number but not 3 times the same digit so it doesn't contradict what he is saying.
It is 1 number 3 times not 3 number 1 time. okay.
Exactly. This puzzle was only solvable by using words imprecisely. It was a word game not a numbers game.
That's why it's scam school reasonable1 It's not meant to be a numbers game...just appear to be.
For the first one, you could just say: 5 + 5 + 5 is less than or equal to 550. The less than or equal to sign only takes one line to create using an equal sign.
DomDizzle02 no because it’s not equal, it is only less than
Daniel Soltau That’s why I said “less than or equal to”. That doesn’t mean it has to be both equal and less than the number, because that is not possible. All it means is that the answer is either less than, or equal to the other number.
DomDizzle02 ah yes of course, you’re right👍
I figured that last one out on my own
Nice video... But i don't agree with the second puzzle... He said that you have to use the same NUMBER 3 times... but his solution was using the same DIGIT 3 times... 55 is not the same number as 5 (Yes, i know, 55 is made of two 5's.... but i wouldn't be bitching if he said "use the same DIGIT 3 times").. The other two are awesome!
he used the number 5, 3 times.. and he used that number 3 times I got it right away
TheSkaterfreak360 No, he used the DIGIT "5", 3 times, one time as a "5" (the number five), and two times to make a 55 (fifty-five and 55 =/= 5)... Yeah, i "got it" too! I solved the puzzle... It's just that (as I already said), I wouldn't be bitching about it if he would've said "digit" instead of "number", which leads to misleading information... LOL that's pretty much what i said on my first comment.
***** Dude, relax!! I already said that i liked the puzzle, I EVEN SAID that I solved it!.. I just don't agree with the info he gave them, that's all!
AkibaMCRGrenias I agree with you, Akiba. I figure out two solutions, and none of them was the answer in the video, which disappointed me. Here they are:
*1)* Considering he didn't said we couldn't use another signal, so one solution could be >>> *60 - 60 + 60*.
*2)* If another signal isn't allowed, my approach would be that he didn't restrict the number of '3 same numbers'. So the alternative solution would be >>> *9 + 9 + 9 + 11 + 11 + 11*.
*****
No its not misleading, its improper use of the English language.
I got the second and 3rd easy. In my defense, I don't write my fours that way.

I got the first two but on the last problem I was thinking split the + into two - and making:

Noah Schuler then 20 would not work... these puzzles were fun but trivial. the last one did make me think though :) would like to see more like this

I know that this is an old video but anyways. I got the first two puzzles really fast and the third took a good time, but I got it without the solution. Now I'm proud of myself

The first one and third one was easy but the second one pissed me off!
+kalikonyat I'll take one out of three!
Yes! :D Free Beer ;)
+kalikonyat I found the second one easy ... xD I was thinking like a kid :D
all of these stumped 4 of my 9thh grade friends, 1 11th grade friend, 1 12th grade friend, and 2 adults I know from my school........Haha suckers
I was so hype when I got the final equation.
I got the first one before he even said not equals and I feel like I just go lucky, or something, but damn.... It set me up for the failure so hard on the next 2 haha
For the first problem, drawing a line through the equal sign would make a symbol which means, "is not equal to." That would then make the statement true.
My answer for the second question was "None." So I got that wrong.
I did not finish the video to see your solution for the third, but I'm really certain it's going to be 3 squared + 4 squared = 5 squared ---it's just a super common expression.
Daniel Paszak uh oh... someone owes me a beer now!
It's true.....wait on 2nd one, right? I mean my solution for the first is valid and I'm still certain I'm right on the 3rd.
Daniel Paszak in the question for the first one said no to what you did. the second one is wrong. the third one, you only get one 2, you used 3 2s
So on my first solution, you are right. I missed that detail. I watched the video again. But for the 3rd problem, which I liked, I did not hear him explicitly say each number had to be used one time. If he said so, and I missed it again, then I'm wrong AND royally il-attentive. But in if he did not explicate that condition, then not only am I correct but did well in not assuming a rule that was not spoken. If I present this problem to someone, however, I will for sure say each item can only be written once.
Thank you for correcting me. If you're ever in Minneapolis I'll buy you a beer.
Daniel Paszak eh... we get the "does not equal" solution to *every* math puzzle, so I tend to think its not worth a win.
Everytime he said thanks to the sponsors i skipped the sponsors-part until the actual video-content xD ... I mean that sponsor-stuff doesnt interest me, so why should i watch it ?
+RuLeZ1988 oh, I don't know... maybe because they're the ones who make the show possible? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Scam School Yeah, but they dont get any profit by me, cause iam not interested by these offers.

For the second one, the rules are 1 number 3 times and 1 plus sign, but he explains them as “3 of the same number and a plus sign” so I thought 3 numbers are 60 and make it 60 + 60 - 60 = 60
Same thinking.
You don’t get a minus sign though
I figured out the third one before he even have the paper to the other two people.
3rd one: 5-4 = 3-2 (broke the plus sign into two take away signs, if thats allowed lol)

+60 = 60
pretty sure 60 is not equal to -60

Yeah guys good ideas, but you can only use a plus sign.
Just earned a sub and notifications on. These were brilliant.
awesome!!
Now that was awesome! Now if I could count to 3 I'd be good.
Second one is a a complete cheat,
if 20,20,20 are 3 numbers as you say, how can 5 and 55 be 3 numbers , your basically tricking them by saying 3 numbers rather than 3 digits, 55 is one number not two!
+TheAlley124 A trick? on Scam School?
Well now I've seen everything.
he said in the first one you cant say not equal to but if he had not said that, you would be correct.
+Scam School I'm not going to lie, I got all three, the first two I got quickly but the third one stumped me a bit until I thought about the squared numbers
Split the plus into two minuses so you can get:
5-3=4-2
For the first one, if you draw a line through the equals sign, you get a "is not equal" sign, which makes the equation true.
I honestly figured out the second one because he didnt say you can group the same number to make a different one then add the original
I really don't like scam school, because it uses to much adds ;(

For the last one, its 3 to the power of 2 = 4+5
Yes!! I nailed it!
The 1st one was actually really easy. 2nd was slightly trickier, and the 3rd was the trickiest, but they were all cool! 😸 I really like puzzles like the 1st one.
Why am i in the scam school rabbit hole again!? Curse you briaaaaaan!!
got the last one right
Q2 is cheat cause he didn't follow the same rules and he said them before he made his 20+20+20=60 which would be using 2 numbers (2 and 0) or if that was allowed then 55+5=60 isn't valid cause 55 and 5, you've guessed it, aren't same numbers. Either his example was wrong or his solution was. I know this is all light-hearted and good fun but you have to follow your own rules.
Am i the only who started screaming four when they said maybe you add something to the plus sign
for the first one, you could also draw a line through the = to make it ≠ (does not equal). that might not be the correct answer, but it makes the equation true by adding just 1 line
It won't make the equation true because it will no longer be an equation, it will be an inequation.
First two were easy as sh!t. Third one was clever though.
EvilGeek I'll take whatever I can get. Thanks, man.
I got t he first one, change one of the + to a 4 so it's 545+5=550
