Despite a rocky start that came out great Patrick Donohue, well done and thank you for showing us.

Nice looking gem. I like the use of the wax to stabilize the gem, and the composite using paper towel!! Tks!

FYI. I’ve remove a couple small orange opals from my dops with soaking in attack and had no problem. I use epoxy in my dopping. For the long Raytech dops I put about 1” of attack in a tall bottle like an olive bottle. You then add about a 1/2” of water on top of the Attack solvent. This keeps the the Attack solvent from evaporating. Also there is no smell. The tall jar allows you to close the jar. I’ve never had a problem with any stone in the Attack solvent. (Do wear gloves) Good job. Happy faceting. 8:44

    That came out really nice.
I must say I that I use acetone all the time in my shop and I had no idea that it could penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. I never use cloves with it but maybe I will now.

      Thanks!
Besides drying out skin, long term acetone effects via absorption in animals included kidney and liver problems, which is why nail polish remover is acetone-free now - and doesn't work as well.

Wow! Considering there was a slight error in the beginning, it really turned out beautiful!. the fire opal is such a gorgeous stone! The color is amazing! And the translucency is amazing. I know a lot of stones can look milky or cloudy but yours looks amazing! Beautiful Patrick!

Thanks, Lisa! These opals were really nice "trial sizes" from a friend who has an eye for quality rough.

I love hearing your daughter in the background. One of these days, the video will be her with her first stone. I enjoyed seeing you use the cheese wax to assist the dop. I'll be jumping on that technology for sure; who doesn't love cheese and faceting? That really turned out nice and that cut is a looker too! Have you considered going to the Red October when Jaime opens it back up to get the fire opal? I've been meaning to get down there and seeing this makes me want to go even more! Thanks for sharing your process, cheers!

I never really considered opal mining before, and hadn't heard of Red October. Now I'll have to look into it!

Do you watch Black Opal Direct? I really think they would be well served by learning to facet the clearer opals with less play of color.

I do like BOD! I'm guessing it's not worth their time to bother too much with stones like that, since black opal is orders of magnitude more expensive.

No, but I have a couple of Apache tears ready to go. I'm thinking they're next after I finish the other opal.

Beautiful stone and even more stunning being cut it should be done more for some reason opel are always round or ovel ,, and u should have done it all with voice over fucking head doing the baby in the background, I'm shocked it's close to wear u work doing this I'd get as far away from that fuck racket as I could
