    More About ZERO:
Zero is the story of Alice who lives with her paranoid prepper father, John. All the preparation in the world can’t save her father from the inevitable cardiac arrest that follows when an E.M.P. disables his pacemaker.
Alice is left alone in a barricaded farmhouse in the English countryside. But the ghost of her
father lives on through the strict rules he gave her: trust no-one; never let anyone in the house; and never, ever, leave.
All Alice has to do is follow these rules to the letter and she will survive but her resolve will
be pushed to its limits when a wounded man knocks on her door...

Excellent excellent film. That actor is just amazing. She's brilliant. Some people in the comments are saying they'd "like to see more", or "like to see the full story". Personally, I think the film is perfect as it is. Films and literature are best when they're not didactic. And the ambiguities in this short gem are what help make it arty. And more universal. How many times have I felt like that little girl, lost, alone, terrified; yet determined to move on, despite the uncertain future. That's part of the human condition. Any more details than were provided would have "cheapened" the message, in my humble opinion.

    • @jcdmobil352
      @jcdmobil352 5 лет назад +19

The way I understood it, the EMP had happened several months or even years ago, and ever since, father & daughter have been living in the barricaded house while the father's heart got worse and worse and couldn't be balanced out by the pacemaker anymore because this device had stopped working long ago when the EMP went off.
So technically, the pacemaker wasn't his death sentence. If he hadn't had it in the first place, he would hace died a lot earlier.

This film starts simply, with just enough detail to make the premise clear, and to introduce us to Alice, our protagonist. The moment of the EMP strike had emotional power to it, and acted to clearly set the story moving forward. As Alice goes through her solitary life, we see the monotony of her existence, though it felt a bit superficial in its portrayal; I guess one can only do so much in less than 14 minutes. The intruder's appearance gives Alice--and us--more insights into the outside world, and sparks what is the turning point in the film--Alice's true destiny.
And it is this destiny which saves what would otherwise be a no more than a workman-like film with a woefully under-utilized actor. If this film is the opening scene for a feature film starring Ms Ramsey and set in this universe, I'm all in. Best of luck in getting it made, Keith and David!

So the warning on the screen was that there will be an EMP to disable the invading giant robots and the father was preparing her for human nature pillaging and horrors that scared humans commit when not restrained by society?
If she had fed the stranger she would've lost WAY more than a few cans of food in all likelihood. If he was desperate for food, how would you ever think he would distance himself from a treasure trove of it and move on. He would likely have told himself it was ok to assert his dominance, He HAD to for his survival.... and once you cross those kinds of lines you're left fearing whatever other lines conscience can allow to be blurred for survivals sake.
She did well to obey her fathers rules. He knew she'd have to go out eventually to plant food etc. but she'd be larger and more able to stand a fighting chance against whatever human chaos existed out there.
.... that's the thing with bomb shelters.... you'd have to be able to listen to the screams of neighbors who didn't prepare.... who could live with that? ☹️
Remember the old Twilight zones? "Friends and neighbors" can get very ugly when survival is at stake. ☹️

Sci-fi short - comments by Jan
    Beware of spoilers!
ZERO by The Brothers Lynch (Keith & David)
Plot: Girl in post-apocalyptic shelter finds her want for life. It is not so much original topic, but the storytelling is enjoyable and full of emotions. Although plot itself is not huge, it is told nicely and there is a space for character arc development. The end is open for future - we do not know what it will be for her, but the story of the movie is told fully.
Negatives: 1) just a little thing: those planks did not look like something could defence her
Positives: 1) storytelling; 2) not much dialogue, but perfectly working; 3) general setting - so disturbing post-apocalypse and yet so calm
Personal note: Oh, you Trifids-fighters, still eating those cans of paint over the dead body of the person you could take care?
Summary: I enjoyed this movie. Definitely in better half of post-apo theme.

Came here to support Bella, and get away from the absolute filth that is the comment sections of nearly every other forum on the internet when it comes to her involvement with the ‘Last of Us’ series.
The comments about her appearance are horrific and just go to show how superficial this world and humanity are.
I literally just had to stomach someone justifying the vitriol and backlash by saying that it’s more fitting to the story if “ellie” is doe-eyed & good looking because that’s why people gravitated toward her and protected her and that in real life it’s the same thing, “ugly” people are ignored or displaced.
And you know, the latter half is true, horribly true, but why would you perpetuate and rationalize it??
We should be fighting for more representation of all kinds, and to stop the superficiality both on screen and off, it’s literally killing people.
It’s no wonder this kid developed an eating disorder and had to stop another project for their mental well-being when I see how people devalue her (and others) for immutable characteristics out of her control, they even conflate her appearance with her personality and the ability to express herself facially and act.
So I guess she’s just not a human being to them deserving of showing emotion?
    It’s just despicable.
I know it seems awful to even bring this stuff up, as if I’m only adding to the problem and unsolicited, but I’m just beside myself and I think the reason why ‘lookism’ (not a better term that I know of) runs rampant is because we are always brushing it under the rug and finding excuses to not talk about it and criticize its damning affects on those who suffer on the less fortunate side of the spectrum.
And it’s not just because she is a child, no adult or anybody else should be getting this type of mistreatment. It’s bad enough the covert ways humans treat one person versus another over their inherent looks, so the blatant bullying is just over the top and unnecessarily cruel.
If this poor girl “looked the part” to these @sshats, they wouldn’t already be preemptively picking apart every other aspect of her being the way they currently are.

Maybe old dad was a lot more clever than we give him credit for. The remoteness of the location was the key to avoiding threats from the outside, but he wisely knew that the biggest threat was for the girl to prematurely go out and git herself kilt 😨.
The boarding up was actually to keep her inside, along with a healthy fear of what is out there. Time would change things in her favor if she did as daddy instructed...and that's mostly what she did.
It has been too long since movies gave a good dad the credit he deserves. This one could have made that credit a bit more clear, but it's a good step in the right direction.

(no spoilers). It's reminiscent of the final seen of the original Planet of the Apes when the Statue of Liberty is slowly revealed and thus the realization that they were on Earth the whole time. (OK, that was a spoiler but God help anyone on the sight having not seen it. The same can be said of the uber classic scene in Gone With The Wind (granted not sci-fi) when the camera starts off with a close up of a wounded soldier and then gradually pulls back and back and back revealing the thousands of dead and dying soldiers allowing the viewer to vividly see and thus enable the viewer the full extent of the carnage of war.
    Thoughts?
Any guesses as to why they chose the title "Zero"? I'm stumped on that.

I was thinking it's called "Zero" because of the countdown till the EMP.

    One question.
The description mentions a "mysterious pulse" that destroyed everything.
However, there is an Emergency Broadcast Warning on the TV, and they have been stockpiling food in anticipation of the event.
    How mysterious can it be?

Great movie - perhaps slightly confusing as to why the Giant Robots seem to have been dead/derelict for a century, when it is implied that the EMP burst eradicated them, less than a year before this. The visuals of the giant hand are certainly arresting, but do raise a couple of questions...

I have often wondered how bad, bad can get, humans being as we are. The capacity for such cruelty as well as compassion. It takes an unimaginable amount of judge of character to survive such situations. If the time ever comes when we need to deal with it, I hope I'm incorrect about a few aspects of us.

You're not wrong but, as Colonel Kurtz said: "It's judgement that defeats us." To act appropriately in an amoral situation we can't judge, only act as necessary.
