Such a good scene. Tony acting exactly how he needed to to make Eli drop his guard in his arrogance and his superiority complex, making him forget that he had three other witnesses who wouldn't turn a blind eye even with an implied confession like that. One of Tony's best techniques is acting the fool to get others to say what he wants.
Some people don't like NCIS and while the shine on my nostalgia for them is wearing down, scenes like this are just too good.

I think the loss of recurring characters like Eli David, Diane Fornell, CID Agent Mann, CGIS Agent Bourne... the loss of a showrunner, the loss of the writers that gave us storylines and backstories...
Missing Tony & Ziva is putting it too simply.
The tapestry was more complex back then.
This scene had multiple threads to it.
Director Vance was skeptical of DiNozzo until this point.
Director David clearly underestimated Tony... who was proving a point to both his boss and Director David's daughter.
Gibbs's confidence in DiNozzo's skill at interrogation is not misplaced.
The mention of Ziva's half-brother, whom Ziva shot dead in the Gibbs basement, possibly taking orders from Ziva's father right up until his end... wonder if that had crossed her mind before Tony threw out his "You send all your Rogue Agents to D.C..." line...
Ziva appears to angered by her father's unplanned admission... either because she's mad at herself for not trusting Tony to begin with or her father meddling in her career & personal life.
It's a complex scene... one that the show currently would be hard pressed to do now since the "back bench" needs reinforcements and the characters in play now have thin backstories compared to the David family.

I think a thank you is in order to the film crew that shot this scene and made us feel like we were in the room with a seat at the table...
...something Dick Wolf understood during Law & Order.
...something the showrunners at CSI Miami forgot during season 3 when they started shooting interrogation scenes from across a hallway with a prism on a file cabinet... because someone liked how the light shined in their eyes. Like they got bored with actually filming performances.
Here, the scene isn't filled with gadget shots or 720 degree rotation shots like West Wing did to show they could.
They just let the performance be the focus.
Amazing how many shows forget to do that.

when writing excellence and performance excellence marry each other - is a thing of beauty. Make no mistake, this is storytelling at it's best - somebody wrote the progression of this conversation to lead to an inevitable conclusion that would be both entertaining, believable, and powerful. But, the best writing in the world falters if the performers don't perform, and Michael Weatherly (sp?) performs. I love watching content and execution combine forces, and NCIS has a lot of that, which is one of the reasons I keep coming back to the show over and over again.

My guy, Tony DiNozzo, ladies and gentlemen.

  • @varianschirmer9375
    @varianschirmer9375 3 года назад +9

Ziva appears to be angered by her father's unplanned admission... either because she's mad at herself for not trusting Tony to begin with or her father meddling in her career & personal life.
It's a complex scene... one that the show currently would be hard pressed to do now since the "back bench" needs reinforcements and the characters in play now have thin backstories compared to the David family.

Gibbs on so many difficult occasions praised DiNozzo and held him to the highest regard, it was usually done in Tony’s absence. Off the top of my head the scenes I remember which Gibbs held him to high regard was when:
    1. Ari infiltrated NCIS and Gibbs said to Tony I want someone I trust to be at the top and run things
    2. When he called him his loyal St. Bernard when Director Shepherd was asking for a status update from the team and Tony was the last to cave in
    3. When Tony was in Baltimore PD and came across Gibbs for the first time and Gibbs told him he doesn’t waste good so encouraged him to apply as NCIS agent
    4. When Maddie Taylor and Gibbs reversed back into the water and Tony singlehandedly took everyone down and saved both of their lives. Gibbs knew Tony would find him and back him up
    5. When Tony inhaled the powder from the letter in SWAK episode and Gibbs was looking through the camera to see who was there since they left office the night before and saw Tony come back. He gave a proud grin and said “he does his best work at night”
    6. When he left Tony in charge of the team when he quit
    7. When Tony had enough and asked for Gibbs to start finding Ziva and orchestrated everything. Gibbs didn’t lash out at him and respected his stance
    8. When DiNozzo senior and Gibbs met for the first time and Gibbs asked about their relationship and praised DiNozzo that he is the best agent he ever worked with
I’m sure there are many more that I have forgotten over the years but there is no doubt throughout the show that Gibbs’ right hand man has always been DiNozzo
