Some FUN FACT INFO- I actually used to work for New Renaissance records back in the day I was in contact with David he sent me a few M.A.tapes and thats how they ended up on the Satan's Revenge 2 comp,Dave kept saying they were in contact with Combat rec, Metal Blade, Roadrunner to release Abominations but to be honest the reason I think Abominations was never released was because Metallica/Bay Area thrash was HUGE at that time and labels were looking to sign more commercial user friendly Metallica sounding thrash bands..also i think its important to know that during the 86-89era Morbid Angel never changed their sound to be more"Thrash friendly"like lots of bands did..Also when Dave started Gorque Records he mentioned releasing Abominations Kam n Rick Rozz mentioned David was gonna release Massacre-Infestation of Death and Terrorizer-Lp I would have loved to see those records come out during that 87-88 era. Also I spoke to Richard Brunelle he said Morbid Angel was encouraged by Digby Earache to speed up the old songs when they recorded Altars to add the blast beats as"Grindcore"was starting to trend Pete being in the band added to that sound but if you go back and read all the Altars reviews from underground Zines of that time, alot of people like it. however a lot of people Did NOT like their newer faster style.. Abominations is the embodiment of 87 era Morbid Angel and Altars is more of a reboot IMO..I can't tell you how disgusted, disisappointed I was when I first saw the cover to Altars. The anticipation for Altars from the underground wa s Huge and that artwork just didn't fit with the hype, the mystique for their debut. As much as I liked Thy Kingdom Come 87 demo I thought SLAUGHTER LORD-Taste of Blood 87 demo was so much better, faster, vicious and evil sounding! Slaughter Lord should have had their own debut for that time. The Morbid Angel/Slaughter Lord split 7ep is one of my fave bootlegs
Cool story! Satan's Revenge 2 was my introduction to MA, and also Necrovore, IIRC those were the only 2 songs I liked on it. I bought it on cassette, I loved New renaissance at the time, Bathory imports!
Steve Tucker's vocals on Kingdoms Disdained are just superb. David Vincent still sounds really good as well in Vltimas. I personally love Kingdoms Disdained and Domination.
I agree Altars Of Madness was one of the best DM debut albums ever released.. But Blessed Are The Sick was always and will always be my favourite Morbid Angel album
The 'Blessed Are The Sick' album artwork is by Jean Delville, who was a fantastic Belgian painter, & the rather large original can be viewed at the National museum in Brussels. It is called 'The Treasures Of Satan' so, yeah, it was only a matter of time before it would be adopted by a Metal band. It''s my favorite Morbid Angel album as well. It makes sense that it was a split between older & newer material for a sophomore.
I love the way you called David Vincent the "Dio of Death Metal." Pretty true I reckon. Good video. I remember first hearing Morbid Angel on the Grindcrusher compilation (Chapel of Ghouls). Totally jaw dropping.
Hi Alan. Think you're right about the first 5 albums, absolutely flawless in my opinion too. What's also amazing about Morbid Angel is that all their albums never sound alike. Pretty unique, especially in extreme metal. Would love an Iron Maiden discussion. A band with loads of releases and stylistic changes over the years as well as three vocalists! It's a band we all know and love so would provoke a lot of response. Also Megadeth would be interesting too. Plenty of meat to get into there!
Nice episode. I listened to Gateways again yesterday and read the lyrics. It’s a very dense record but very rewarding. Incredibly good and dark as Hell.
I think its hard to state just what an impact it had at the time , it was as you said just next level . Very nice to hear a review from a musician and indeed an Irish reviewer . Unfortunately I never got to hear them live . Must admit though its still one of favorite metal albums . I must listen to Covenant, never heard it Great video and review thank you.
Once again another excellent episode of this series, the Hexenhaus record you were talking about is called "A Tribute to Insanity" (a damn good album too btw)
i just found your channel , first of all i would like to say that i really enjoy listening to what you say and i like also how down to earth guy you are. Spot on your guide ofc.Plz do an Immolation guide/review is my second best Death metal band next to Morbid obviously :P .An a simple Request come to Greece plz with Primordial you know we love you !!
Nice guide! I used to worship at the Altar of Madness :D They kind of lost me after that, except for seeing them live on the BATS tour. I lived in Tamps in 1992 and used to hang out with Pete all the time, crazy time and crazy stories!
Also MA was my first real "underground" show. I saw them when I was 15 or 16 on the Altars tour, definitely a top 5 show of all-time moment. My friend had a zine and I went back stage with her after the show and got lectured on Magick and Aleister Crowley from Trey for almost an hour. Talk about being a completely awestruck kid!
Great video, that was class, I remember getting the train to Dublin to buy Altars in the Sound Cellar based of an ad in Kerrang or Metal Hammer, still spining it till this day..
I remember enjoying the last Vincent album which I can't remember the name of but not loving it , half the album is dominate style death metal and the other experimental tracks should have been relised on a remix album like when they did the god of emptiness single with laibach. Just my thoughts , great video tho Maybe candlemass next ?
My copy of Blessed are the Sick also has two lyric sheets with one having the misprint image covering the words and the other with the image in the background so you can read them.Maybe yours are the same?Cheers for the video.
I always say either Morbid Angel or Immolation as best death metal band. And no, I don't have that shirt. Interested in hearing where you jump off with the band. My guess is much earlier than I did, but then I got into them later than you did, as you said affects the way people hear later albums.
Great episode. I would rank Gateways above Formulas personally. Heretic is not a bad album in my opinion, but it definitely is brought down by production and and excess silly bonus tracks and instrumentals. Illud could have been an ep I agree. Man, the bad tracks on that album aren't just bad they are horrendous. I still cannot believe songs like "Destructos vs. the Earth / Attack" and "Radikult" came from MA.
You are speaking my mind, agreed on everything, though I must admit that this and the previous decade, Formulas dethroned Gateways from its place (5th in my book) !
Nice to see you praising Formulas as many seem to overlook the album just because of the absence of Vincent. As you are focusing on bands with varied discography, names such as Master's Hammer, Beherit or Mayhem might be interesting choices for some of the next episodes...
Have you seen them circa 98/99 with Vader and Enthroned ?That was without a shadow of a doubt the greatest Death Metal experience ever ...not even necessarily music ,as much as pure magic ...no other Death Metal band has taken me somewhere which was far ...far from that venue, from myself actually (no drugs involved btw )... "Formulas Fatal to the Flesh " Morbid Angel live was a band at their absolute peak .
saw them in Paris for the reunion with David Vincent and before Pete Sandoval left. It was a good set. they were late to come on and this awefull techno was blasting for ages
well the kinda point, if there is one is to find bands who have ups and downs! more to discuss, Immolation for example in my opinion never made a bad album, gradients of good to amazing.....but that doesn't provide for much dynamics in a chat right? Bolt Thrower certainly I think 'blood, valour'/mercenary' were not that great imo
Morbid angel is the first real death metal band....NO MATTER WHAT ANYBODY SAYS death was more a thrash band compared to the force that is MORBID ANGEL.
@@AlanAverillNemtheanga pretty long time ago, must have been after they released Domination (95?)... Creative times, they and a lot of other bands released albums or ep-s pretty much every year.

I love the t shirt man! about consistency, my theory is that if Trey didnt have those problems with the frontmen constantly leaving the band then we would have a very different Morbid Angel right now, with Tucker right from the beginning they had a chemistry and a momentum which really showed till Heretic, despite that it is not their best imo, when you have basic members of the band leaving then its very hard to come back on track again and thats what i believe happened with Morbid angel, but Trey is a genius and i still wait for their really epic swansong record which will blow everyone away, i think they can do it
I saw them in 88, I think, maybe 87? So long ago, hard to remember... but if memory serves me, it was with D.R.I. and Kreator. Quick set, 20 minutes, 3 songs maybe. But it was still awesome. They were on first, so I was sober enough to still remember them.
Death is such an obvious choice to do next, maybe too obvious. Would love to see an Autopsy one but dunno how up to speed you are with the slew of releases from them in the past few years
Quick question Alan have you been 'cancelled ' by Zero Tolerance magazine? your back of the magazine chat/rant has gone the last few issues ( though you still do the Call From The Grave segment )
I do disagree I think Gateways is better than Formulas for me, it's the last great for me personally. Hearing David singing those songs live was absolutely astounding on the Covenant anniversary tour.
I couldn’t disagree with you more about Gateways. You need to give It another listen. Buy the vinyl, invest some time into it. It’s a masterpiece. Treys lead playing on this album is easily his most creative and intense
It's not a bad album and I listened to it quite a few times over lockdown, but by about halfway it tails off in my opinion, couldn't name you any of the last few songs....missing hooks, dynamics and memorable choruses.....but will check again and there is no doubt I do need it on vinyl!
Revisiting this podcast and finally tossing my two coppers into the filthy LIffey. My one problem with Altars is that the vocals are too high-pitched, which was quite well fixed on the following two records. Are we listening to the same band that you'd proclaim this the best dm album of all time? VIncent's balls finally dropped with the next record, and that's why Blessed and Covenant are so much more confident, domineering death metal records than Altars. Deep grizzly bear, intimidating roars, as death metal vocals should be. Influence-wise, sure. Altars changed everything. I'll not deny that. Yet Covenant, even taking into account a couple useless instrumentals and a laughable version of Angel of Disease, is still their defining moment.

Formulas is my favorite record, afrer Covenant. It's astounding how one band can provoke so many different reactions from their listeners.

I agree Altars Of Madness was one of the best DM debut albums ever released.. But Blessed Are The Sick was always and will always be my favourite Morbid Angel album
Summoning Redemption is one of my favorite Morbid Angel songs because it’s so good live. Sooooo good live
I think the Abominations material and Altars are timeless classics, but honestly I think Gateways is underrated and number three in their discography.
I like the album, perhaps it is under rated, but saying it's better than 'Covenant' for example? couldn't disagree more....I would rate it 6th......!
