I think his art style is beautiful. It's the eyes! He's the face of SNK! When I think of SNK it's always beautiful sprites and Shinkiro’s art. Also love how it is a delicate mix between realism and exaggeration. Oh an he also draws smiles in a distinct way. As distinct as his eyes.
@@GameArts1 I think the grins with the full set of teeth is as Shinkiro as the eyes. He defiantly has a ton of detail on the teeth. Even when they open their mouths they have a specific Shinkiro style. His art style is defiantly unique. Also I do think he's hard on himself regarding drawing women as I think they are as good as his male characters. I think his art style is truly fascinating. Mixing stylized with realistic.

Shinkiro's artwork was some of my favorite ever 😀. I don't know if anyone reads manga, but one of my favorite artists hands down is Ken Ishikawa (R.I.P.).
Shinkiro's artstyle is so iconic that hentai artist Saigado (real name Ishoku Dougen) tarted making KOF doujins using a style that was clearly inspired by Shinkiro's (just less detailed and more "anime") and they were so popular he made dozens of them from 1996 until 2010, and while he did develop his own style, it's still somewhat reminiscent of Shinkiro's.
Shinkiro, aka THE SNK artist, for as much as he does have his successors overtime (I know Ogura of SNK learned a lot for him according to interviews). Great video!
Shinkiro genuinely sounds like a great funny guy to be around, on top of also being an excellent artist. I remember when I was introduced to his style when I was first discovering fighting games back in the 2000s as a kid. His art always stuck out to me; those bold striking eyes, the extremely sharp line-art, and his almost uncanny levels of realism. I remember feeling slightly put-off by it at first (being otherwise immersed in a sea of Capcom's anime-style characters), but simultaneously drawn to it out of pure fascination. It's almost like witnessing some sort of taboo being broken. I often forget that his artwork is the source of the smile meme lol
Thanks for sharing. In my eyes I think some artist like Shinkiro and for example Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano are more in line with (young) adults. They are less ''cool/flashy'' right from the bat, but they grow over time as we can appreciate more and have a gist on the talent in the craft. (Shinkiro's earlier work was way more 80/90's and ''cool'') But this is purely my experience, art is subjective haha.
A lot of his works really pop, and the composition and spacing in his artwork is incredible, especially how he's able to set an entirely different tone depending on the colors he uses. I also like how he renders his characters emphasising the realism just like Takehiko Inoue, or Boichi. The mix between realism and cartoon is fantastic nonetheless
Agreed. Before making this vid I checked another YT video on Shinkiro who discussed one specific image (5:40) in detail and I was very intrigued about how careful Shinkiro placed the characters and set the scene. (I am not that familiar with KoF, but it made the whole relationship between all the characters crystal clear.)
SO THATS THE NAME OF THE ARTIST!!!!!! man i always been a huge fan of this art style CVS2 arguably one of my favorite fighting games of all time how all the characters looked so realistic in their character portraits was so cool to me.
His work is and always will be phenomenal but I absolutely love his rendition of Geese Howard. Geese looks so menacing in his art style, like a crime boss that enjoys his criminal empire but he could also murder you where you stand if he wanted to.
Wonderful analysis! Shinkiro was the perfect choice for SNK's promotional & executional aesthetic during their early years. As you said "You know a Shinkiro piece when you see it."!
His early SNK era art reminds me a lot of the 80's Anime and Manga aesthetic. Stuff like Akira, City Hunter, Lensman, Wicked City , The Running Man, Crying Freeman and many others. Anime/Manga where the faces used to be more "Stylized" or "Anime" while the body proportions and clothes were very much "Realistic." He's still a great artist but I will forever be a fan of his 90's SNK stuff. Which I find to be very Iconic and unique within the Game Art community. Even to this day.
Nice! I'm also a big fan of 80's and 90's manga style, it's very expressive. It shaped my childhood and made me fall in love with it in the first place.
Awesome video. Shinkiro has been one of my absolute favorite artists since childhood. His art is unique, distinct, and detailed. Like you said, you know it's his just by looking at it. Absolutely incredible works.
I recognize his design aesthetic from all the SNK art in the 90s. I love how realistic and Japanese the faces look. It's a refreshing perspective. It's also interesting seeing some of the newer work because it makes me wonder if I'm looking at an AI generated image or a photo of a person in cosplay. Good stuff
Amazing! Definitely worth the wait. Man, I love Shinkiro! So inspiring for me as someone who also has a style that is a mix between realism and anime. Thank you so much for this video!
Always loved the 90s and early 2000s artwork of his, nice rendering on the skin tones and great colours. Though I did think a lot of his earlier works suffered from "same face syndrome" especially the CvS males haha
Shinkiro and Eiji Shiroi defined the Neo Geo/SNK style of the 90s. Aside from manga, I see a lot of Jack Kirby influence in his drawings as well. I also find it impressive that a large majority of his work with SNK was done with marker. One other artist associated heavily with video games that doesn't get talked about enough is Frank Cirocco. He's responsible for doing a lot of the marquee/bezel artwork you'd see on arcade cabinets back in the mid-late 80s and early 90s, as well as box artwork for various NES games

Shinkiro is insane, his art defined a whole franchise's (KOF) look and even more (SF and other SNK) via promotional art. Kinda wish they let him cook on Tekken art, maybe Granblue sometime
l think Shinkiro achieved a unique style by drawing more realistic faces and proportions in an art genre that is almost universally stylized. As an artist myself I discovered my own style when i got frustrated with the typical manga style where I can't make characters make convincing facial expressions with tiny noses and small lips. When I drew more defined noses and lips I was able to make them wrinkle their nose, smirk and sneer more effectively so combined with big anime eyes it was a more satisfying and unique result.

This reminds me of the manhua artist "Chang Sheng" both artist have a somewhat same artsyle blending realism and anime, both great artist in their regards.
Anime is rather the best medium to inspire video game art to better separate fantasy from reality as, like anime, video games are meant to be set in fiction. The tall and round eyes are the best trait because no real life person can have those.
I always appreciate how his art is still unmistakably 90s
I'd say this is more due to costuming and designs of the time, rather than Shinkiro's art itself. His MvC3 work doesn't feel dated at all.
90's Japanese, no one else at that time was producing art like that outside Japan
