- Richard O'Brien chatted with Judi Spiers on Pebble Mill about his work on The Crystal Maze and The Rocky Horror Show. He even had the chance to show off his impressive musicality.
Richard wrote the musical The Rocky Horror Show in 1973. It has remained in continuous production ever since.

This particular set/format of Pebble Mill was clearly the inspiration for 'Knowing Me Knowing You With Alan Partridge'. I remember one of the PM presenters Ross King doing the thing where he touches his nose & points to the band. Also Steve Coogan was interviewed by Alan Titchmarsh around the time of KMKY & was asked whether Partridge was based on him.
That's what came to my mind as soon as I saw the band perched above the main set.
Only partly I feel. The look of KMKY(wap) Partridge is very similar to 1960s chat show host, Simon Dee.

Ah, a monumental moment in history. The last stand of THAT tune on the harmonica. How we miss it. A true masterpiece of the modern ages. It doesn't have a beginning, it doesn't have an end. Just that bit. And that was the true genius of it. The perfect surprise burst of random off-putting music to make you slip off a log, lose focus on your mental arithmetic. It did its job with masterful devilish precision, then glided gracefully off stage without any further fuss. A work of art.
Any Richard O'Brien fan should check out his performances as the Norse sorceror Gulnar in the 1980s fantasy series, Robin of Sherwood. He really was astonishing in it; drooling, mad and very creepy.
There are some funny behind the scenes stories about that, too...

I use to think Pebble Mill at One was rubbish at the time, but if you compare it to today’s One Show it’s as if they have swapped University Challenge for Blankety Blank and hoped the audience wouldn’t notice.😂🤣
That's a great point, thinking about it. I don't watch much broadcast BBC/ITV these days, but what I have seen is very safe and tame these days. They used to treat us as adults that could handle controversy and difficulty. These days they seem to think we're mentally challenged toddlers that struggle with anything that's not bland and safe.
Would be great if they could replace the One Show, with Pebble Mill at 7. Just the theme tune for the One Show gives me nightmares😂

I always used to watch whenever on annual holiday from work or sick leave.
Now the exact grounds is the Birmingham Dental Hospital.
But you can still see the similar grounds as it once was Pebble Mill Studios.

As a guitar nerd he’s playing a Hohner Madcat which is a guitar most famously used by Prince. I thought when I saw it in the thumbnail that he was going to play some Prince because of it 🤣.

He used to come into the hmv I worked at in London. I think maybe he was at a production in the area. Lovely man. Mad as a box of frogs but lovely.

Search "Richard O'Brien leeds castle" and you'll see him performing The Timewarp acoustically just before an open air showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show I was at a few years ago. It was a great surprise for all the fans there!
That Telecaster is a Hohner Madcat, Prince's favorite guitar, though his is probably custom made.

@@asensibleyoungman2978 Never suggested it was. 1994 seems like yesterday to me! However, this would surely only have been filmed in SD at 480 resolution. This rivals HD for its quality.

Low E string open, A string second fret, D string second fret (I think). E5 chord.

They say the name, The Crystal Maze. It was on Channel 4 in the 90s.

Back in the day I didn't believe it was possible for someone to be a better host for the crystal maze than Rick. But watching it back Tad pole was better. Maybe Ed was happier with the job. One episode Ed is laughing uncontrollably as a female contestant is slipping a falling onto a plank of wood in a way that obviously was unpleasant. But Eds brutal lack of empathy, from my point of view was his best moment. Loved it all, great days
Here,Here..I preferred Ed Tudorpole too. You could tell Richard had got bored in his 4th series & was getting ratty with the contestants. Ed was a fresh breath of life & even more manic. (Even the producers told him to tone it down a bit)
Some things he said were hilarious & I remember him crying with laughter at the swipe card game.😂

The set does look partridges, the audience is dead, the interviewer is crap, rolling her eyes , Richard OBrien is an icon on film , theatre and Television. Deserved a much better platform
This guy is a legend. A true British eccentric. Whats more, is even though he is transgender he still states that you cannot change your sex. Old school common sense.

Back when interviews were interesting and featured intelligent people. Watching this, it shows how poor things are nowadays. The world is so dumbed down nowadays. Adverts are the worst, they just feature the lowest common denominator of society in depressing living conditions.
