Happy Easter. I too want to encourage you to fulfill your dream. I believe in the division of labor. I knew I wanted to be a doctor. It was not easy (my parents didn't pay for my dream and I had some learning difficulties). I was given the Pell grants (they are a type of inexpensive loans) and one $1,000 scholarship. The rest of my past high school education education I worked and had a deal with my spouse. We worked together on the cost of my dream. It took longer than the average so I was 34 yo but I did become a psychiatrist (MD). This allowed me to do things I do naturally and use Pharmaceuticals judiciously. I also became board certified in psychotherapy. Yes it was a "huge mountain to climb" but I am the never-give-up-kid.
My hope is my story will encourage you no matter what difficulties you run into, you don't give up. There are many types of farms (I know because I came from the farming community of NE OHIO). Farmers have to be willing to learn and learn many things. My relatives and family friends have truly enjoyed their lives. They love what they do. Not all of my relatives stayed in farming (like me) but many did. Farming like being a physician is a balance with compassion and hard decisions. I truly wish you well.

I happened upon your channel when a suggested video was the one where you tricked the hens into hatching your pea chicks. I have been binging your videos for weeks, now.
I agree with everyone else about how inspiring your videos are. In addition to that, it's also a so heartwarming and wholesome to watch.
My navy veteran daughter and her active navy husband are considering homesteading as well. They have 3 kids with a 4th on the way. I'm trying to encourage them. They have even recently adopted 6 chickens from someone who can't take them where they're moving. I've tried to get her to watch your videos.
Your videos also really make me think about the food I'm eating. I'm not in a position to farmstead, and I'm not sure that I could do it. I immensely respect what you're doing as you've certainly helped me appreciate what I do have available!
There's more I'd like to say, and I have so many questions. I'm think I'll just finish with...
Wishing you all the best!!! ❤

Our chicks just hatched out today! We have a chick that is about to hatch out, but so far we have 7 that have hatched out. We have one pheasant and 5 chicks so far in our brooder. Our other chicken is in our incubator, the Nurture Right 360. I’m hoping for no more death in hatching because we already lost one chick, the yolk exploded but it somehow survived but then it died about 6 or so hours later. I hope your chicks don’t die in the cold and/or by a predator. Good luck on getting some more emus and chicks. Also my chickens are picking on on of the chickens in my flock, any ideas other than blinders? Good luck with everything on the farm Jake!
Edit: I’m 11 and I bought the incubator and have been taking care of my chickens for almost a year now! It’s crazy how time flies. I’ve taken care of the chicks too. Our pheasant is called Pilot and our first chicken to hatch is named big foot since it had big feet when it hatched, we also got a French Black Copper for free as well as the pheasant. We got the eggs from Big Pine Hatchery, a local hatchery near us, about 40 minutes away. You also inspired me to be the person I am now, and thanks to you my chickens live a happy life and trust me more than any of my family members. You are also the reason we got hatching eggs and why I’m still going strong with this dream of mine. Thank you Jake and good luck.

First, I love your channel and your family is beautiful! I don’t do any type of farming and the only animal I have is an aussiedoodle (which I’m honestly curious what he would do around your animals and Joey, probably run in circles). Second I love that I can watch your lovely family and know that y’all are everyday people and even live within an hour of me. Third all I can think about this whole video is all of the spiderwebs in the chick barn… that room is going to showcase in my nightmares. I would be ‘feeling’ spiders crawling all over me the second I stepped in there! 😅
I do have a question regarding your video with the predators. So motion lights scare them off? Y’all got me afraid for when I let my dog out at night. I knew we had bobcats around but wasn’t aware coyotes were roaming as well.

I'm in comments because I want to ask you something, maybe you know something about it.
My family has chicken for years, since I was kid I would go to the coop and just spend time with the chickens.
Roosters are ours, because they are usually really big (since we bought a really pretty rooster because I picked up a liking in him,
he grow up to be one of the biggest we had, and since then we have pretty big chickens) and my grandma likes it.
We of course have our own hens too, but we still need to buy new for sake of keeping a bigger number (for eggs mostly),
we don't have a specific breed (or we just doesn't really care, because we have them mostly for eggs and meat but for my and my grandfathers fun too)
so we buy every year (sometimes we skip one) 15-20, sometimes up to 25 young chickens, and so with that we got a hen that lays BLUE EGGS.
I'm sure it's from the bought ones but it could be that we got eggs from somebody if tho never one of them was blue.
In past year my grandpa decided to o an experiment and put a hen on two good blue eggs, they chatch, we have two beige colored hens, one lays blue eggs one doesn't.
None of said bought chickens weren't beige but there were two white ones, my grandpa doesn't remember which hen was laying blue agg first.
So in this year my grandpa is collecting said blue eggs and we will put a hen or two on them (I'm not sure how much he gathered over few months but I think it's enough to go from normal beige eggs come to hens laying blue eggs).
Do you think it's just different breed of chickens or it's something else?
    Simply curious.
My grandma doesn't like the idea.

I read an article years ago about a hen that managed to get out of a truck. The truck was taking them to auction. This hen lived by herself in this neighborhood most of one summer, fall and winter by herself. People in the neighborhood would put out food and try to catch her,but nobody could. The next spring she disappeared and people thought she had been eaten by something. A while later they were all surprised to see her with a dozen chick's. She had not been with a rooster since she excaped, the truck the year before. You keep putting you hens with different roosters. The chick's aren't going to be purebred unless you keep them only with roosters of thier own breed. You can mix all the hens won't matter. But those roosters don't care what breed those hens are.

Run shade cloth or reusable plastic hessian on star pickets between the fence that divides the yards. It's a bit of a pest to have to go another level of separation but I doubt that the fence will quell the fight without at least one rooster becoming severely stressed or hurt.
It's peak breeding time so they will be on high alert as a result of hormones which means they likely wont learn from the fence zapping them

Do you think you'll add solar to your farm for these electric fences or do they already use solar?

I think the Swedish flower chicken would be a chickenbreed for you . It's a rare breed and also a dual purpose breed.😊

Have you been weighing the emu eggs to see if they are fertile? I have seen other people check that as the green shells make them hard to candle to see if there is growth.

Yes, per our original hatching video, we have always weighed them with every hatch.

I'm from Belgium and my parents have had Bruges fighters their entire life... watch out if you have two roosters... they will fight until death... at a certain point you'll definitely have to separate them
