      @krautgazer 3 года назад +3

      @@Silver-rx1mh Hello, sir! I just want to give you a positive view of my young generation so you don't despair for future generations. I'm a HUGE Kubrick fan since I was 15 years old. I'm 29 now but I have seen lots of younger people growing their passion for art films, even the most uncomfortable ones. I know that "safe" mainstream cinema is still the most popular amongst the majority of the younger generation but that was always the case, since the classical era of Hollywood and passing through the 60s, 70s and 80s. Star Wars was always more popular than 2001: A Space Odyssey, for example.
      Conversely, there's a lot of filmmakers today making artistically daring and socially or psychologically uncomfortable films, some of them even in the mainstream and being nominated or winning the Oscars (Moonlight, Parasite, Get Out, Roma, Nomadland etc.), and a lot of them being indie films which are getting even more popular now more than ever because of streaming services, or even TV shows like The Handmaid's Tale, 13 Reasons Why or Black Mirror, all very disturbing but with deep messages. My conclusion is that you should rest assured that there will always be dark, profound and intense films, and the young public will also always dig them because we dig adrenaline, endorphin, philosophical discussions, edgy art and all that jazz! Young people will always be the same young people in every generation there is, but of course not everyone is the same, like the one in this video... You can say the same thing about the older generation. My 74 year old mom and my 68 year old dad will NEVER watch anything like A Clockwork Orange or Black Mirror.

    An interesting titbit: when Anthony Burgess wrote the novel in 1962 Alex and his Droogs were written as young teens, 14 and 15. When Kubrick made the film in '71 it seemed absurd that such young people would be involved in that kind of violence, so he cast them older. Of course, all these years later the idea of 14 year olds engaging in that sort of violent behavior is no longer not unthinkable but nearly commonplace.
    The novel was written during the height of the cold war and posits a future in which some kind of cultural rapprochement has been reached, which is why Alex's slang is adapted from Russian. For instance, he uses the word "horrorshow" to mean very good. That is an Anglicization of the Russian "хорошо" (khorosho) which means good or OK.
    I saw the film when it came out and thought it a brilliant piece of film making. I read the novel a few years after, because I'm always interested in the process of adaptation.
    A friend of mine used to say, "There are two kinds of people: those who understand what Stanley Kubrick is doing and those who don't understand what Stanley Kubrick is doing. It's a rather glib sentiment but it does seem that Kubrick's film often drive people into two camps.

    • @MoviesMoveMe

    • @ElliotNesterman

      Kubrick is one of those directors who doesn't spend any time on explicit exposition. None of that "As you may know..." He expects that by the end of the film you will understand what has been happening. Of course, it doesn't always work out that way.
      "2001: A Space Odyssey" famously left audiences wondering what had happened as they left the theater. The general confusion was so widespread that Arthur C. Clarke, on whose short story the film was based and who consulted on the screenplay, expanded the short story into a full novel after the film came out so that all the questions could be answered.

    09:10 "I'm watching violence."
    No - you're watching Ultraviolence.
    The ending shows Alex making a deal with the head of the government who signed off on his "treatment" to be positive about the government and the role the government played in "curing" him. The "cure" itself is shown to be losing its effectiveness in an earlier scene and one can assume Alex will revert to the violent sociopath that he was - just this time with a good job. The film asks the question of whether morality can be legislated and what happens to free will when it is? Alex is a monster but the greater monster is a government which would fight crime with state sponsored behavioral conditioning as well as buying off any casualties along the way - just for the sake of retaining power. A Clockwork Orange is, without question, the greatest film about free will ever made.

    btw - to get the last part of the movie, read the newspapers and listen to the minister speak. they lost a lot of popularity due to him getting tons of sympathy in the press. they therefore convinced him to be a propoganda spokesman for them, to show that the government 'cared'. He went along to get the associated perks, and the music and psychiatrist showed that they had 'cured' him. very cynical ending on top of a starkly bleak movie - I saw it first when I was 10 and man it did a number on me.

He was a sociopath again but in service to the powers that be...his fellow thug friends were the same way in that they were sociopaths that were put in service of law enforcement, so it was ok. it's definitely not an easy watch this film. It is subtly implied through the film that the ludovico technique doesn't actually work at all (in contradiction to the book), and Alex was only chosen because he's clearly manipulative enough to fake a positive result..(he only freaks out at the music because it's a bad recording with synthesisers, and that truly upsets him regardless). I took from this film the idea that we live in a society that actively rewards the kind of people like alex as long as it's in line with those in power. Alex becomes establishment at the end, which accepted his ways as they are just as amoral. (the observers in his fantasy at the end are all dressed in clothing people wear at Ascot race day, high society, applauding him as if he's chosen to be himself, within their system). there's a lot of nazi related symbology associated with alex through the film too, as if he's unaware of his politics. that's not to say kubrick was condoning that, more that he fears our society is still acting in fascist ways, and showing us in an exaggerated manner. The freewill debate is important, but its not the entirety of the themes in the film. There's some hints that various authority figures had been molesting alex - his parole/probation officer and the priest, a sort of layered mirroring of Alex's abusive nature throughout society's hierarchy, Even the crippled author wanted to use alex as a political sacrifice before he even knew Alex had assaulted him, implying all political extremes are essentially equally amoral and authoritarian...and you understand why alex is the way he is. It's very deliberately jarring and unsettling, with exaggerated juxtapositions of mischievous classical music and horrific violence in multiple forms, as a lot of cinema does combine the 2 in less overt ways to engage and titillate the viewer. It's a distorted mirror to focus in on the darker aspects of our society, it's values and how it can mould us for the worse. I've only recently been re-watching Kubrick's films and while a lot of them are unsettling in many ways, i've found the subtle ways he misleads a viewer to allow for several storylines and themes to plausibly unfold, fascinating, and overrides that unsettling sensation. if you switch your perspective slightly, interpret a piece of dialogue differently when a character is deliberately vague, suddenly the entire context of scenes shift, with meticulously placed visual clues to reinforce those alternate interpretations. It's just unfortunate he never left a more simple decoder to his thought processes s its taken researching a few different sources to get an inkling 😂🤦‍♂. I understand this isn't everyone's form of entertainment, and no shame in not having enjoyed the experience...there's ton of movies i wouldn't even give the time to, so no criticism on not liking this film from me

      I read the book first, too. There is A LOT of weird slang... but funny. (and referenced in a lot of other media) It reminded me of Watership Down, which has its own mini-dictionary for rabbit language. 🐇

    i agree. i completely despise blood-splatter films, torture porn and unklillable seriel killer crap. but that's NOT this film. this film is a social commentary on what the future holds for humanity if it continues down its path violence and self destruction. and what this film warned us against IS WHAT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW! the cultural worship of guns and violence has led us to almost daily mass-murders.
    so, like "1984," and many other novels and movies, the warnings of the wise from the past has been completely discarded in favor of corporate police-state oppression and social violence on a GLOBAL SCALE! so, the question is - when the hell are we going to learn from the past? and create a better present and future FOR EVERYONE! not just the most vile and corrupt among us?

      @@MoviesMoveMe It's all good. The world needs different views. However, I do think that overtime, the movie's dialogue, the paradoxial composition of the story/score, and the dark yet realistic portrayal of politics and government will make a deep impression on you and bubble up in your reflections of the world over time. Many Kubrick movies are not easy to digest on the first pass, but ages so well on each and every subsquent watching. Believe me, you will want to watch this movie over and over in the coming the years. You should try Barry Lyndon, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, and Full Metal Jacket as some point.
