I think the biggest thing Lombardi brought to the Packers, and possibly would have done the same with Washington, was that he got more out of his players than even they thought had in themselves.
The Packers would not have been the great team they were without Vince Lombardi. Phil certainly was no Vince, even with Vince's players. What a stupid thing to say and an insult to the greatest coach in NFL history - Vince Lombardi.
Earl......Vince could of went to the Moon, Mars, even Hartford Wisconsin & THAT STILL WOULDN'T HAVE MADE PHIL A BETTER COACH. That had to be thee dumbest comment coming out of a Gillespie.
Listen to the quote again, he said that Bengston will become a better coach (effectively grow into himself) now that Lombardi isn’t there to guide, not that Bengston would be a better coach outright.
The roster was aging. Most of the team’s best players were getting into their 30s. Lombardi or not, that team was going to regress after the 67 season.
Phil Bengston was definitely not the answer for Lombardi’s departure.
I just saw this on RUclips. It gives perspective of just how much these players respected VL

Starr was a Star of my Childhood Go Pack Go !!!
Well as quoted from the Lombardi biography “When Pride Still Mattered.” Phil Bankston was a nice guy, but not a leader.
That's a great book.

This deserves more views
Lombardi saw the writing on the wall and knew the Packers would lose their edge in 1968, so he knew it was time to move on.
Agreed that's why I don't consider him the greatest of all time surprisingly he was only in GB for 9 yrs!!!

"Phil Bengston will be a better coach than Coach Lombardi." LMFAO!
Yeah I heard that question took 50 takes because nobody could keep a straight face.

I'm for the Roman Catholic from Sheepshead Bay.
Lombardi was too tough to duplicate. The Redskins were glad to get Vince as their new coach.
Is that Earl Gillespie? Wow brings back great memories.
What did his departure mean? 20 years of wondering through a frozen desert-snow blind.
Their disgraceful field goal kicking cost many games in 1968.
'well see now, this phil bengsten guy seems to be the real deal for vince leaving"
Phil who?

Phil was a terrible coach. and packers were losers for 25 years
