    I've had a Hakko 808 desoldering gun for years, it really is a game changer and worth every penny. Be sure to blob some solder on the tip after you use it to keep it from oxidizing

    • @jestes7

      How long does it take to oxidize? I just use the bronze cleaners after every use, is that good enough?

    I just got one. I figured I saved some cash during the Covid 19 lockdowns during the last 6 months of not eating out and other activities that were abandoned so I justified buying it. IT IS FRICKEN AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. It works so well it seems like a dream that came true. Super clean solder removal.

      One thing to add, buy more filters.
      A larger tip is helpful for pulling/sucking out solder around lugs and getting onto pins from larger parts like D-Sub PCB mount connectors.

    When they work well a desoldering gun are worth their weight in gold! Sadly they can be a bit prone to clogging though. So just be sure to clean the barrel out after every project even if it seems like it needs it or not.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  4 года назад +2

      Yeah, definitely need to regulary clean it. Already had it lose suction after about 100ish joints. Luckily it's very easy to clean.

    I bought an off brand desoldering tool based on Dave Jone's review on the EEVBlog. Well worth what I paid for it when you need to remove components from a board especially if you have to re-cap it. You're going to love having one.

    These really shine when you desolder chips from boards that are through hole platet, those singlesided boards are okay to do with a braid, doublesided boards with platet holes are not easy with a braid..

  • @KISSbestfan

    It has one more use. It looks just like an alien gun from N64 game !
    Other than that sure its a good thing. I started to use desoldering braid quite not a long ago. Earlier I was just topping an old copper wire in flux and used this for desoldering. Talk about uneasy job here !

  • @MV60

      @@RetroRepairs I've got some stuff from hobbyking. Can't remember the brand, will have a look for some different stuff. Thanks. It only rarely pulls out solder like you get it to do every time. A lot of times it just ends up sticking itself to the board. May need a hotter station too, it goes to 400c on the top end of the green scale on the iron.

    I bought a Aoyue desolder station a few weeks ago wasn't cheap even in sale it was about the equivalent of about 160 US Dollars. Crazily enough its more because I am a amateur at soldering so didn't want to screw up stuff with braid or a solder sucker.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  4 года назад

      If you can justify it, buy one. Even 160 is alot if you just do it as a hobby, this was by far the most expensive tool I've ever bought, but after having used a braid for a couple years, i couldn't imagine going back.

  • @IrishAnonymous01
