  • I found a very rare old fighter from the Japanese Imperial Army Air Service. It was abandoned at the end of WW2 but salvaged and kept together. Paul Allen bought the plane and sent it for an extensive restoration in New Zealand. It was completely disassembled and made flyable in 1999. It accidentally made a short flight during a high speed taxi test. I'm not sure if it was ever flown in the USA but it is sitting in the Flying Heritage & Armor Museum in Everett Washington.
Wikipedia has a photo of this plane in 1945 abandoned on Rabaul Island. It is the only one I've seen with a two blade propeller.

This is the place to see rare WW2 aircraft that have been restored to perfection, probably much nicer than wartime production. Additionally, in 2015 Paul bought a sizeable chunk of the Littlefield tank collection at the estate auction. Instantly they had to change the name. And just about everything in this museum runs.

Cool. Madras is about an hour away, so I need to check it out. Also, I need to add the Flying Heritage & Armor Museum, as it has a good collection of planes in the background. Notice that it has a good collection of Armor. Being an old scout (Army), I find heavy metal interesting.

I'd suggest heading by car up into Oregon and checking out the Evergreen museum at McMinnville. Next is the museum of Flight in Seattle. World class facility and collection. The Doug Chapman fighter collection is well displayed. Then an hour north is the Paul Allen Collection at FHCAM. On the drive back go inland and check out Ericson. Are you in Oregon or California? We recently checked out Hill AFB Museum on the way to California. New material for this winter. I've never been to Ericson.

That is a totally new build not a restoration. They had parts of four wrecks to study and make patterns off of.

There is a picture of this exact airplane on Wikipedia when it was captured in 1945. It looks complete and undamaged. I would hope the plane was restored and not replaced. Do you know which shop did the work?
