    Mike Ditka was one of the best Tight Ends of all time.
    The younger football fans might know him as a coach and a broadcaster, but he wouldn't be named “Iron Mike” if he is not a solid force on the football field.
    Ditka was a three-sport athlete in college but decided to pursue football when he was drafted fifth overall by the Chicago Bears in the 1961 NFL Draft.
    It didn’t take long before his impact was felt, enabling him to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
    Ditka was a part of the Cowboys team that won Super Bowl VI over the Miami Dolphins.
    His accomplishments also include five All-Pro and five Pro Bowl selections.
    The former Pittsburgh Panther finished his NFL career with 427 catches for 5,812 yards and 43 touchdowns.

    I think the play that caused Gronk to be really injury prone was the play you showed against the Chiefs were he leaps over a defender to get into the ended zone but lands awkwardly on the back of his head and shoulders and his momentum bring his legs up to where he practically gets folded in half. He definitely got hurt and wasn't the same after that.

  • @Aleph3575
    @Aleph3575 Месяц назад +3

    4:27 Sterling Sharpe's career really is one of the bigger what if's in NFL history. He was an All-Pro while playing through a career ending injury, so you really have to wonder what might have been if he hadn't had that neck problem. He made the Pro-Bowl 5 out of the seven years he played and had actually absurd numbers for his time.
    9:31 Gronk made Brady entertaining to watch. That by itself, is almost enough to justify him being at number 1. Its kinda funny looking back and realizing he had durability issues and missed a ton of games when I promise you it felt like he was fucking invincible on the field watching him. It was like giving Mario a Mega Mushroom and a Star at the same time during some games.

    • @dfp_01
      @dfp_01 2 месяца назад +2

      Yeah, their career accolades are similar, and I don't think they're as different in terms of blocking as we've been led to believe-Kelce gets very few blocking opportunities because of how the Chiefs distribute his snaps, and while he's never going to pancake a linebacker, he'll get in the right people's way. If Kelce returns to All-Pro form at least once or twice more, and continues to chip away at Jerry Rice's records, I think his longevity gives him that extra boost over Gronk. I wouldn't want to tackle either one of 'em.

      @@dfp_01That’s an interesting point.
      You can’t go wrong with either one, but your view on longevity vs peak is what this comes down to.

Personally I have Ditka in my top 10 instead of Newsome; and I also have Mackey a bit higher than some of the other guys here. Top 3 is a close race between the same three guys you have here. Tight end is one of those positions where I think it is pretty easy to pick a top 10, it's just not easy to order them. In some order, Gonzalez, Witten, Kelce, Gronkowski, Sharpe, Gates, and Winslow (Sr.) are your top 7, and you can argue the merits of Olsen, Graham, and either Ditka, Newsome, or Shockey after them. Kittle and Andrews are likely well on their way into the top 10, but they're not there yet.

    love to know what you think of Jay Novacek, Brent Jones and Mark Bavaro.
    they all arrived in the league in the late 80s to 90s and they all established themselves as safety valve receivers for their respective teams, the 49ers and Cowboys being dynasties.
    Bavaro was the best blocking tight end in the game, and Jones and Novacek were clutch receivers, especially on third down, when Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin were being double covered.
    they don't have the video game numbers or the longevity of the listed TEs here, but they're still something impressive to watch, if you ever wanna relive an NFL where tackling is legal.

    Counterpoint about injuries stopping Gronk. Yes he suffered many injuries throughout his career and retired young because of them. But he still came back strong after suffering some very serious injuries. In 2013, he tore both his MCL and ACL in his right knee (also apparently got a concussion on the same play). In 2014, he played 15 games. Caught 12 TDs and over 1100 receiving yards. He then put up similar stats in 2015 as well. Not saying he didn't have an injury-ridden career, but the man took everything the game had to throw at him before he slowed down.

    I’m a chiefs fan so Kelce is my top pick but I respect Gronk’s placement on this list. I think if Kelce stays healthy for a few more seasons he can put the debate to rest but right now I can see the arguments for either one. I like the video.

    Gronk was so strong that defenders started tackling near his knees to bring his down, thus causing all his injuries. He dragged defenders 5 yards with him to the endzone and was legitimately a 6th o-lineman.

    Gronk isn’t the best te. He was injured all the time which is a huge factor. Availability is the best ability doesn’t matter how dominant you are when you play if you’re never playing. I’m not gonna say a guy who had 4-5 great years is better than a guy who had 10+ great years

    I’ll still pound the table for T-Gonz. His lack of rings/playoff success is definitely a QB disability. Not his fault. Gronk and Kelce are gifted with the two greatest QBs of this century. You could only imagine what Tony could’ve done with that. I think there were actually rumors he could’ve been traded to NE at one point. Him and Gronk on the same team would’ve just been flat out unfair to the rest of the league.

    Good list! I agree with most of it.
    With regards to the Patriots, it is crazy to think how dominant the Gronk + Hernandez combo would’ve been, had they been able to play together for decades to come rather than just on their rookie deals. I still watch highlights from time to time. I feel like Aaron Hernandez utilization in the Pats offense created the blueprint for Kelce and other TEs today, given that he mainly acted as a Y receiver more than a TE
