Use 5.56 or 7.62 even a 9 mm or 45 with semi auto and a gunslinger. You can kill any hostile enclave in lethal in 15 seconds or less. Take a scent block so zombies wont interrupt you. The later is not necesarily but it makes it easier.
My first KIA was similar to this. Set off fireworks around the house and booked it away. Got busy dodging zombies and failed to realize the enemy were rushing me with the entire zombie train in tow. Had to go back later to finish my now zombie character off.
I would've brought in some gas, smoke, flashbangs, higher caliber long range weapons (personal fave is the Hordebreaker), more painkillers, and first aid kits. That shooting was rough, but that is what has worked for me in Lethal zone
