Backyard Skateboarding: Game of the Year Edition Walkthrough

- Welcome to yet another walkthrough, this time for perhaps the guiltiest pleasure of all the Backyard Sports, Backyard Skateboarding. More precisely, this is the updated Game of the Year Edition, which added a fair amount of things that I'll go into detail about later. I played through all of the levels and did all of the challenges, as well as collected all the coins.
This was actually a bit of a pain to make. As much as I do love this game in a so-bad-it's-good way, there's a lot of things that annoy me about it. Primarily, pulling off tricks that require ridiculous key combinations are much easier said than done. You'd think it'd be as simple as just following what the screen tells you, but it's really not. I find it's just easiest to spam whatever keys it tells you to press and hope you pull off the trick doing so. The controls are also a bit finnicky, especially with grinding. There are probably a lot of parts where nothing happens or I'm just looking for coins, so you may want to have the video slider at hand.
As far as what the GOTY Edition added, for the most part it is the same game, but there's a fair amount of additions as well. The most notable one is the inclusion of a new level, Rooftops, though they also added many other smaller things like the new jet power-up, a new tutorial level (as well as the yellow Andy Mac helmets that serve as help), new cosmetics, and some small level tweaks. They also fixed a few of the bugs from the original (the most noteworthy of which being the infinite jumping bug). For the most part it's a "the same but more" situation, though if I ever do run across the original I may just go on ahead and walkthrough it as well for completion's sake.
This game is very much a guilty pleasure for me, and it seems that way for a lot of others. The game is chock full of dumb glitches, the physics are hilariously stupid, and the power-ups are not balanced in the slightest, but for some reason I still find myself enjoying it anyway. However, did it really deserve a Game of the Year award? Meh, not really, though looking at the history of the games they gave the award, I'm not terribly surprised either.
Now, onto level-by-level comments...
Neighborhood: Had to go with Achmed because he's my favorite. I try to kill two birds with one stone by collecting coins while doing the challenges, though that can cause some stalling...hope nobody minds it too much. I don't have a lot to say here.
Boardwalk: Going with Pablo because I know everyone would kill me if I didn't play as him at least once (fun fact: one of his lines translates to him not knowing why he's called Secret Weapon. How humble of him!). This level is a little easier since its layout isn't as complicated as the neighborhood, but some of the coins are still a pain to find.
Rooftops: Ugh, I don't like this level. Not only does it feel really tacked on (mostly because it is), but the coins can be a real pain to get. I don't think it helps I went with Keisha on this level, who has really sluggish acceleration, a major pain for going up those windows. There's also one challenge involving grinding on helicopter blades that is really annoying because it only counts when it feels like it. I cut out a good chunk of me fumbling around trying to get the stupid thing to work.
Castle: In the original there was originally no hint you were supposed to jump into those rocks to get to the turrets. This version added signposts that point to them...great, now you gave a really, really vague clue on what the rocks do. Would it have killed them to have just added a proper way to get to the turrets instead of...oh, I dunno, jumping into perfectly normal looking rocks? Oh yeah, and they added the stupid molasses power-ups on them because apparently it wasn't annoying enough having to get to them, now they make it a pain to get the coins too. Anyway, other than those rocks this level went alright, but I almost ended up with the Last Lousy Point problem by having only one coin left. Thankfully I remembered which one I missed and found it without a hitch.
Skate Station Alpha: This time I went with a custom player, and yes, I made him look as horrid as I possibly could. Come on, I have to have a little bit of fun, don't I? Also, me choosing the bear slippers had nothing to do with me loving furries. At all. What ever gave you that idea? Joking aside, this level is thankfully pretty easy since the coins are all fairly confined. The last challenge is a pain though because you have to do one of those tricks that involves an annoyingly long key combination, and you can't just keep retrying it over and over, you have to keep grinding up that rail. Thankfully I was able to do it with enough attempts. Regarding the remaining unlockables, I believe they are likely unlocked by completing the trick book or getting certain scores, but I didn't care enough to try for them.
That's all I have to say. Enjoy the walkthrough. - Игры
This game was my childhood
fr
I played this game all the time in kindergarten.
GOD THIS GAME BRINGS BACK FEELS!
I used to play this so much when i was a little dude, and I just ordered the GOTY edition, and the day I got it, I collected all the stamps and beat the game. This game is probably my favorite game of backyard, and in general!
I remember going to my local library to play this game on their computers as a kid. Such a core memory in my childhood.
Level Guide:
01. Neighborhood - 05:38
02. Boardwalk - 35:00
03. Rooftops - 1:02:56
04. Castle - 1:31:20
05. Skate Station Alpha - 2:06:50
dude I remember never beating skate station alpha, only to years later find out that I was just off finishing the game :(
I remember finally unlocking everything and feeling like I was on top of the world
I had this game, and the weird thing was It was playable even WITHOUT the game in the disk drive...
If only I knew that as a kid, I checked it out from the library so I had to return it after a while
lol I love how this is more playable (and much better) than Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5.
Can you imagine if Tony Hawk was in Backyard Skateboarding?
Jesus christ this game was literally my childhood. I thought it looked amazing as a kid looking back it looks terrible lmaooo but some of these challenges were so hard. I beat the game too
Omg this is enough to make a grown man cry
1:48:02 this voice actress is dead inside
I remember my cousin gave me this game when I was a little kid. Those were good memories
I just had the original release. I'd always make a custom skater, get the Excaliboard, and give it orange wheels. I also loved the Got Chum shirt.
I've never even seen this before, and I thought I played every skateboarding game already! I'm trying to review them all. Looks like I need to hit up ebay to grab this one.
+Mr. Eight-Three-One Unfortunately I picked a genre full of terrible games
Well, this one is of the "so bad it's good" variety to me, but maybe you will have a differing opinion.
Don't forget there's also two versions of this game -- the original and the Game of the Year Edition. The original has one fewer level and quite a few more bugs (notably an infinite jumping bug that doesn't work in this version), as well as a few more aesthetic differences.
Thanks. I'll be on the lookout for it. Looks like there's also a GBA version, for a new level of misery.
@@MrEightThreeOne Well, it can't be worse than Robomodo's games, right?
@@RadRatVideo Hmmm, no offense but that is your myopic opinion; I happen to enjoy playing/experiencing Backyard Skateboarding for the Nintendo Gameboy Advance.
my dad used to drop me off at the public library thinking I was going in to "study" . meanwhile I was playing this game the whole time I was there.
i can't believe i spent 2 hours watching this but i honestly have no regrets
Core memory unlocked
I wish someone post the soundtrack to this game because I like music to this game.
+SuperDesmond12 I have planned on doing it for a long time on HumongousSoundtracks, but the only problem is that I still have several games to go before I hit this one, unfortunately.
+Mr. Eight-Three-One that's fine when ever you get the chance to do it. Just do it. Ok
+Mr. Eight-Three-One
I wonder if you can do a "Meet the players" video.
If not, fine. If so, great.
+Mr. Eight-Three-One You didn't play as Dante, Annie, or Dimitri.
I realized that Sunny Day is Princess Peach
Correct, and it's happened twice no less -- her first voice actor, Jen Taylor, also played Peach at one point!
Memories! We played this game with my cousins 👌
50:41 Ouch
33:56 THE GOOOOOAT!
This game was my childhood
I never had any of the Tony hawk pro skater games
I had this
Best Part of this Game: It has an actual Story
Never had this version or played Rooftops, Very interesting stuff
Me neither :(
I love it! Just like tony hawk!
man this brings memories i forgot i had
This is my childhood 🤧
381,question:after the Atari logo,a still version of the 2002 version of the infamous HE! logo is seen. Its a special logo.Right?
My favorite part was the knights of Rockville performance.
This game yo....im legit freaking Rn wow it’s been years since I’ve played this game! My childhood
Wow what memories
i remember playing this with my cousin when i was young
this was waaaay before i played my first tony hawk game.
god, the physics and controls aged like milk.
OMFG I GREW UP PLAYING THIS GAME!!!!!! I DON'T KNOW HOW I GOT TO THIS VIDEO BUT I'M SO GLAD I DID!!!! AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
I very much remember the crazy cheat code called... nofair... XD
That whole intro was Skate 3
The Joust-a-saurus lurks in the dungeon.
God, you mean that people actually bought backstage passes to meet Achmed's band after they played??
Ryan Bedlack lol the singing was a little off, but the tune was great!
I wonder if you can do a "Meet the players" video.
If not, fine. If so, great.
I never did get the jewel incrusted board😭😭😭
14:30 37:26 57:56 1:43:28 1:51:00 That Rocket power sound has a weird loop to it. It makes you perform a Buttslap like in some Tony Hawk games (seen in those parts at 14:38 37:39 57:57 1:43:37 1:51:03 1:51:14 )
How does one do a “Fakie (insert trick here)” exactly?
the only thing that confuses me is how to balance the grind
How do you get into the top bowls at the top of the castle?
+Taylor York You have to jump into specific yet perfectly normal looking rocks.
I know, it's every bit as cryptic and stupid as it sounds.
I notices that Dimitri did have some lines in the intro movie.
Dante and Annie are just the only two that are just unimportant.
I used to go to the public library every day and play this
Used to play this game when I was 3 years old boy.
I'm sorry, how did you get up those towers in the Castle? I haven't been able to find a way!
It's really stupid. You have to jump into specific rocks and they teleport you to the towers. In the original (non-Game of the Year edition), they aren't marked at all so you just need to blindly try rocks until it works. In GOTY, they are marked with signposts with arrows painted on them.
@@MrEightThreeOne that... is so stupid... how is anyone supposed to guess that?
I remember this being a lot harder lmao
50/50!!!!!!
MEMORIES
NOSTALIGAAAA
Nice.
Eric's voice sounds like Sid Phillips's from Toy Story.
This was my first ever video game. That was 17-18 years ago jesus christ
Memory *unlocked*
How come when I played this game back in the day Reese wasn’t a boss? And also I couldn’t go practice at the skate park.
You're thinking of the original, not the Game of the Year Edition seen here.
Mr. Eight-Three-One Oh alright, I got confused, thanks.
Am I the only one who played through all these levels but not the rooftops level?
You didn't play as Dante, Annie, or Dimitri.
+Gabinations Congratulations. I couldn't care less.
Mr. Eight-Three-One What does I couldn't care less mean'?
Mr. Eight-Three-One Btw I should have known you would say that. >:(
+Mr. Eight-Three-One Another thing.
Is a simple meet the players video to much for me to ask of you?
Mr. Eight-Three-One What ever that means, that was rather rude.
"Game of the Year"? Yeah, I'm sure that's what the publisher WISHED it were.

They sure cut down the dialogue for the goals. Can't say I blame them, some of them seemed to drag on and all, but it's still weird. The graphical upgrades are pretty nice, though. The sound design changes are welcome as well, although the token collection sound is a little less satisfying in my opinion.
JuniorAdventurer Wow, I didn't even notice the differences in sound or graphics. And my word, you weren't kidding about the cut down dialogue...seems like they made cuts to nearly every single conversation. Feels a little bit like overkill in my opinion, though they didn't seem to cut any real important stuff so that's good I guess. I was wondering why Ashley and Sidney weren't remarking on looking familiar.
Mr. Eight-Three-One oh wow this is awesome! I had been working on a speedrun route for this game, and thought I'd have to make do with the overly long introductions (at least until they let you skip the rest), but it looks like this version lets you skip the dialogue/cutscenes as soon as you like! Though seeing as this playthrough was done on a new profile, I'd be able to skip all the cutscenes on this version. Combined with all the extra music and graphics and sound effects, I'm astonished that this even exists! Very cool, looking forward to buying this and hopefully completing it in about ~30 minutes at best.
BackflipSpeedruns Keep in mind though there is an extra level in this version so you'll need to learn that too. But yeah, you can indeed skip the explanations in this version. One thing you'll also need to keep in mind is that the infinite jumping bug does not work in this version so you may have to change your route if you were relying on it. The new jet power-up in this version provides a similar effect though, so you can't forget about that.
Glad to educate people on alternate versions though. If you want to be on a lookout for this one, it's really easy to distinguish from the original -- the GOTY edition has Andy Mac doing a stall trick on the cover with "Skateboarding" perfectly horizontal and behind an orange background. The original has Andy Mac in the air with another kid behind him, with "Skateboarding" being diagonal and behind a green background.
Mr. Eight-Three-One Did the original have a tutorial level?
TheGramJam Nope.
2021?
It's like playing a Rocket Power video game 🛹
Happy Go Skateboarding Day 🛹 from Backyard Skateboarding: GOTY edition 🛹(2005)
Backyard 🛹🛼
Simpons movie 🎦
50!!!! 50!!!!!!
Even more annoying than DJ Atomika can be in _Burnout Paradise,_ probably. (But at least you can mod the game to shut him up completely!)
TheBreakingBenny I’ve only played burn out 3 but yeah I remember the radio guy
0:03 I think this is the last game they ever made
Incorrect. The last game they made was Backyard Football 2006.
This game is great but it's not as good as some of the other Backyard Sports games.
Bro THIS game😂😢
i have the original version of this game.
reese
1:20:58
Annie Frazier has a teenaged girl voice. Like age 14.
Those animations on the kids here make 'em look like they have problems. Because what the heck is wrong with you Sally Dobbs? For a mature girl she needs medication.
Hardest Backyard Game Ever!
Backyard game? Hard?
:|
I watched the whole video and there were so many tricky challenges I can't even do so I'm glad I don't have Backyard Skateboarding.
I'm still snorting with laughter at the fact that you think this game actually looks difficult.
Mr. Eight-Three-One I was like 4 while playing this
This game uses the RenderWare engine, right? Boy, Dave Mirra's Freestyle BMX did better than this.
GOD THIS GAME BRINGS BACK FEELS!
I wonder if you can do a "Meet the players" video.
If not, fine. If so, great.
