Backyard Baseball is a series of baseball video games for children which was developed by Humongous Entertainment and published by Atari. It was first released in October 1997 for Macintosh and Microsoft Windows. Later games were featured on Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Wii, and iOS. It is part of the Backyard Sports series. There have been eleven different versions of the game since 1997. Some of the game titles that were created include Backyard Baseball, Backyard Baseball 2001-2010, and Backyard Sports: Sandlot Sluggers.
The original game consisted of 30 neighborhood kids from which the player must build a team.[1] Over the years, the idea of "Pro players as kids" became popular, and the original statistics and looks of the players changed. Some of the professional players that were available included Chipper Jones, Frank Thomas, Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano, Ichiro Suzuki, Sammy Sosa, Jim Thome, Albert Pujols, Nomar Garciaparra, Ken Griffey Jr., and Barry Bonds. As the game progresses, there are some professionals that become available or "unlockable" including Randy Johnson, Derek Jeter, and Mike Piazza.
In Backyard Baseball, players take a managerial role by creating a team of different players to compete against opponents. In the different installments, one could choose to play a one-off exhibition game or a seasonal league, followed by the "Backyard Baseball League" playoffs, which contains the American League and National League divisional series, the AL and NL championship series and finally the "Backyard Baseball World Series". Series games will vary per game.
This game has various playable modes, they include: Single Game, Batting Practice, Spectator, and Season Game.
In 2013, The Evergreen Group acquired the intellectual property from Atari.

Pablo Sanchez, one of the fictional playable characters in the game, has been regarded as one of the strongest athletes in video game history.[2][3][4]
The game has also been noted for its diversity (gender, race, disability, etc.) of characters, both in ratio of white to non-white and male to female, as well as skill level and the distribution of the best characters.[5]
Players
In Backyard Baseball 2001, the Backyard kids are joined by 31 MLB pro players, many of which were all-stars during the 1999 Major League Baseball All Star Game. Eventual Hall of Fame players featured include Barry Larkin, Vladimir Guerrero, Jeff Bagwell, Larry Walker, Chipper Jones, Derek Jeter, Mike Piazza, Tony Gwynn, Ken Griffey Jr., Cal Ripken Jr., Ivan Rodriguez, and Randy Johnson, who are all playable characters to choose from.
Several of these players would be featured in multiple releases including Nomar Garciaparra, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez.

I love how silent and depressing Mr. Clanky's is. Like all the kids are thinking "Oh no. Now this means all of us are gonna get replaced by robots. We'll never have any fun."
I agree
Same thing with the Season Play CPU characters.
The color commentary on this game was unmatched. Half of my baseball vocabulary came from this game.
I'm still surprised they didn't do an animated series, movie, or a kid's sitcom on Backyard Sports because that would've been a great show.
Someone should make one
They could made some millions
I remember hitting a home run with Marky Dubois to my own shock but then sitting there impatiently as I waited for him to round the bases.
marky can hit dont underestimate him
Just happened to me in game lol
23:09 there I am in all my glory
topped off with one of the best themes in the game too
@@boomkittyFX true dat
@@tonydelvecchio7162 you play such good ball with a dart in ya mouth like a cool kid (its a "lollipop")
Coming back to this good times
I was totally waiting for Pete Wheeler's homerun to be a bunt😂
I’ve always liked Sidney and Ashley Webber’s themes. It’s kinda odd that Ashley’s theme is in the key of C major unlike Sidney’s that is in the key of G major.
It's also just the Notre Dame Fight song, which is in B major i believe.
Nice job on making Jorge and Vicki look like pro hitters!!! 👍🏻
Gretchen too
he used a power up called screaming line drive to do it as it is almost impossible
They are terrible and basically impossible to hit a hr
@King-pi8og Vicki's was aluminum power power not screaming line drive
I remember as a kid the computer got a homerun as Jorge Garcia which made me lose the game
Hahahqha
21:43 Sidney's hit was perfect 👍🏻👌🏻
"I don't know what pitch that was, but it tasted just like chicken"-Vinnie The G
great vid, also the message at the end was pretty touching.. these games go so far back with so many incredible memories. thanks for making this one, for sure i did not draft, let alone hit a HR with half these kids so it was fun to see
I feel bad that I couldnt get natural homeruns with all of them, I tried nearly 150 times with the players I failed with. Possible but very slim, like you could go clearly hundreds of times without even coming close.
16:30
pitcher: "haha, i'm in danger!"
Gretchen is just a liability on the field lol
God awful
I had a feeling you needed to use Aluminum Power to get Vicki to hit one out of the park before watching
bro she is beaaans at hitting bombs 😂😂
@@DynoMikeGamingI've hit one with every player but her without the power-up. She'll hit one with the screaming line drive also. Gretchen was also difficult to get a legitimate homer with, but you can actually go down the line.
@@DynoMikeGaming I find it weird that Vicki's batting is literally her only bad stat in like, literally all sports. According to my calculations (I sound like Dmitri), Vicki is actually the 2nd best BYS player overall. (Behind Pablo, obviously.)
its sadder with the fact that its far too easy to get homeruns in the gba version, yet i couldnt score one with her
The only way to get a HR with Vicky without using a powerup is to hit into a gap in the outfield and get an inside-the-park HR.
Unpopular opinion: Pete Wheeler is the best backyard kid in all sports.
Baseball: He has insane power, can field better then Pablo, can run like the wind, and can pitch.
Football: Give him the ball and no one is getting him.
Soccer: Read above and he is insane at goaltending.
Hockey: Read above above and replace ball with puck.
Basketball:he can run jump catch shoot what more could you want?
Love this game, had great memories with it as well as a kid!

That's suprising, I've seen natural home runs with Jorge in the 1997 version before(top 10 worst players by Longtail HQ, for example). You might've just gotten unlucky, it's definitely possible to get a homer with him.
Here's another video of a 'natural' home run with him: ruclips.net/video/dgmZqaqfex4/видео.html
Interesting: they're labeled as such for a reason though. If I tried 100-150 times and couldn't get a single one with the "X" lock on in easy mode - its clear as day to me that they're just a terrible kid. I'm sure in 1,000 tries you could get a homerun with every kid, but I put a lot of effort in to my attempts without knowing for certain and at some point it was time to move on.
It took me maybe 15 tries to hit a homer with Dante, who has the same batting level and a super awkward hitting animation.
@@DynoMikeGaming I guess that's true, you've got to eventually move on. From what I know, it's probably RNG on if it'll be a home run or not. So, although the odds would be really low, you could've just gotten terrible luck with Jorge.
Something I have wondered is if it is actually possible to get a homer with Vicki and Gretchen. I wonder if there's a small bit of a field where they have just barely enough power to get a ball over that precise part of the fence.
@@thecrk9201 exactly, im sure its possible in the backyard field with the shed
@@DynoMikeGaming Out of curiosity, who do you think is the worst player overall? I've only played the game boy advance version, in my experiences Keisha has the worsr for me. Was a pretty bad fielder and not good at batting. Although, I played the game boy advance version so the stats could be different on different versions.
@@thecrk9201 without a doubt for me in 97 its gretchen hasselhoff, who i randomly got drafted to my youtube series team. She's pretty terrible at almost everything.
Dante Robinson, Viki, Ronny Dobbs and Reese are impossible to get a home run with. Rare.
Challenging but not impossible - there were only 3 kids that gave me zero hope of hitting one entirely where I had to use extra help - Jorge, Gretchen, Vicki. I tried over 100 times with each and most hits barely left the infield.
Once you get the rhythm of Dante's hit down, he's actually a mid tier player with his sick speed.
@@DynoMikeGaming Ok, but I've tried them in both practice and an actual game and most of the low batting rates in this game even power has a small glitch of being struck out, grounder, or line drive then a Homer Run. 1/20. I had lucky streak with Kenny. I often choose Dante Robinson mainly his music, running, and funny animations. I only wish that your could have changed the way a player stands to give a better chance of hitting the ball.
@@the1magageneral323 oh for sure my friend but for 1997 this was god dang incredible!!! You are right! As you can see from my video almost every player is useable.
Some of the most underrated players imo:
- The Webber sisters: can hit way better than their stat and can run.
- Dante, like I said - rythym & he becomes super useable
- Tony Delvecchio: running is like 2.5, best 2 ball stat runner and a bomb hitter
My top 9 though are always:
- Pablo, Pete, Kiesha, Achmed, Dimitri, Annie, Jocinda, Stephanie and Maria Luna
@@the1magageneral323 i love a running well hitting lineup and pete wheeler lowkey is a perfect pitcher bc even if he loses some stamina he still runs extremely well
@@DynoMikeGaming I played this game enough times as a kid. Still wish that they kept them going. 2003 was the last great one. Aside for Jocinda Smith, most of the girl players in baseball verries on what you want from them.
I love the home runs when they hit the top of the fence.
Loved this game as a kid.
Thank you! This video is great, really helped me make my roster in mlb
Accidentally saw this on Kimmy's birthday! 🎉
Can you do this in the 2001 version? In the 2001 version, each character has a little thing they say when they hit a home run.
Oooo good future video idea
@@DynoMikeGaming Have you already done this?
@@thetoycollectorofseville6428 not yet no
@@DynoMikeGaming Still waiting for the video of all the characters' home run phrases in the 2001 version.
also in 2001, although it doesn’t show it in the stat cards, it seems like contact and power were taken into more consideration for the batting stat

Physically imagine pulling this off with the worst kids yourself
I’m impressed that you left the yard with Maria Luna, Luanne Lui, and Reese Worthington without a power up. And in BB ‘97 nevertheless, which to me was harder than BBs ‘01 and ‘03 that I grew up on.
Man I miss when the games used to look like this!😢

Finally somebody with some class
I might get some flack for this, but I think Pete is better then Pablo.
Its very close imo
I see where your coming from, Pete was more reliable of catching the ball than Pablo. And Pete is way faster than pablo.
I hit two home runs with Vicki in the same game the other day. I was in shock.
lol imagine if the cpu had a “leap at the wall” mechanic , so many would get robbed 😂
Pete Wheeler rivals some of the best athletes in terms of speed: change my mind.
Great Job!❤
Jocinda’s HR looked like a ground rule double lol
Pablo, you're off the team
No more team
The whole teams over
One time I was playing backyard baseball it was bases loaded 2 outs and Jorge Garcia was up to bat no boosts or anything just power and he slammed it out of the field for a grand slam. Never underestimate his power
ive managed to master jorges wonky hitting to at least go near the outfield and get a base
I hit a natural home run with Gretchen in the batting practice, so it’s possible to hit one with her.
The kid in the wheel chair is a better hitter then me
My Team consisted of Pablo, Achmed, Amir, Maria, Pete, Keisha, Kenny, Ernie, and Gretchen and Kenny had a .576 batting average while Maria somehow had a .723 batting average
Same here but with Mikey, Tony and Dimitri who all raked. Everybody had above 500 average the lowest being Kenny at 450 something
How about every backyard kid reacting when you click no to be on backyard baseball
Tony is not happy
I think in this game maria is one of the best sluggers
With Dante Robinson how often do you get a hit and a home run with him out of the tries?
Maybe they made him better, but I've hit home runs with Jorge all the time in BYBB 2003.
I hit 2 no power up dingers with Jorge in a single play game once
I somehow have four home runs with jorge in one of my leagues teams no power ups cus i dont get any ever
I'm brand new to the game pretty much, got 2 natural homers with Jorge in my league.
He's hitting for a crazy average too, the Power swing tends to drop the ball right in between the infielders and outfielders. Hitting about .450 for me. Plus his arm is solid, thrown out several base stealers as my Catcher

My favourite Ronny dobbs and to be fair with the kid it did go 200 gazillion miles
Werid request but could you do 2001 since the stats changed big time and they added pros?

Billy Jean sounds like Applebloom?
I guess that specific line here sounds similar, but if you hear her other lines I don't think there's that much of a similarity.
You may be right
Pick the robot to pitcher
I cant hit for shit in this game
I did the Batting Practice mode to get a better feel for some of the players. It's tough because the actually lengths of the swing animations vary for the kids, so some have to swing earlier than others
✅
Im embarassed to admit how long it took me to realize ronny dobbs was a guy😂😂
THERES A ROBOT?
Why not make Stephanie your shortstop?
Was this game fun without the pros? Never played it.
Hey bigstar, I actually preferred no pros as you'd get a ton of very interesting backyard kids to not only be forced to play with but play against. Sure, the best versions of these games are arguably the 2001/2003/2004ish versions but the originals really focused on what you could accomplish using only the kids.
@@DynoMikeGaming hm, well I started with the pros. They were so much better than the kids that I never used any of the kids except Achmed Kahn and Pablo.
...Are you sneaking PEDs into the candy jar?
I take it you hex edited everyones power up?
