It probably has to do with what part of the bat you hit it with, you can start to tell more closely where the ball is coming in within the swing spot if you focus on it. They also hit certain locations harder like middle away is usually a good spot.

If you are playing on scumm, hitting to left field is messed up. Sometimes you will here the *smack* sound and it doesnt go that far. Also you can click anywhere and it will not effect hitting! It is based off of timing, stance and the players batting stats.
