As a grade checker I love these guys. Running fills with 20+ of these guys at a time and them all flying past your face while you control them with your hand signals, there is nothing more exhilarating. But it can be deadly for us, guys have been run over and those huge tires explode every once in awhile sending shrapnel everywhere.
+spongaweb I was running an 824 on a job right off the 91 fwy and the 71 in Corona back in the early 80's. A couple of 37's had just unhooked and were dropping down into the fill when the rear tire on one of them exploded right next to me. It was a sidewall blow out and so a chunk of tire about the size of a large dinner plate shot out about 100 feet and smashed a same size whole right into my fuel tank. Whenever I grade checked after that I always felt a little uncomfortable when the scrapers passed by me. Being cut in half would be a fast way to go though. Thank God I made it to retirement in 2008 ! lol
Awesome vid as always, I don't know exactly what weight the 657B can carry, I expect around 45 yards at about a ton a yard, so these two machines moved almost 270 ton of earth in 13.5 minuets, without stopping, Amazing.
Gavin84w I suppose so, but parts make more money for a manufacturer than the initial sale of the machine, and look at the parts demand and duration for these B's If the Denver warehouse didn't have my C parts Hayward did, always. now it comes from Morton which tells me when Mortons out thats it no more of that part, Some one commented once, "Its hard to justify a $30,000 dollar transmission for a machine thats only worth 30K" My reply was what do you mean that machine is worth a million dollars to me, I think this video proves me right, look at the number of repowered 57B's apparently dirt guys in CA think so too .By the way who engineered this repower? was it the people who make parts for them? You are right "they just made them to good back in the day" No electronics and good quality parts.
looks like a lot of fun although im sure after a few years it wont seem that way but for now looks like fun i have had over 20 years of dozer, loader haul truck a d small bit of dragline ( loved every minute of it ).
Thats right race fans, you saw it here first at the California Cat Dealers Scraper 500 ! Rubbin is Racin !, and some good drafting going on here too. We were going to bring you the pit crew challenge also but, our camera man fell asleep while they were trying to get all the lug nuts off. Maybe next time folks. LMAO!
I thumbs upped this about 5 seconds into it. I hated a long haul. The rougher the better for me. Biggest I ever ran was a TS-24. Mostly a TS-14 here in the hills. Up and down, around and around. Makes for a long day. Gas it and go!
as an 627k operator i still like the 27s better do to smaller detail cuts rather than just push and pull ...27s cut streets ..lots and colisides in turning while pushing without breaking the bells...
Not being from your Country, (I'm UK) can someone tell me why they nearly always repower most CATs with Cummins engines ? Is it the cost against a new CAT engine, or, because of the age of the vehicle is it the most economical, i.e. availability of parts and the cost of them. Over here you could count the number of scrapers, dump trucks and the big ex's in use on your toes and fingers combined. I only know of 3 firms that still have any in use and most of them are parked up. All our 'motorway' (freeway) projects are finished and the few roads that they are building or widening they either use Volvo A40 dump-trucks or an assortment of old beaten up 'rigid 8' tippers near the end of their life which they scrap when the job is finished.
In the UK if they re-engine - (rarely), it is always with CAT never Cummins. Mind you CAT have the UK pretty well covered in dealerships. A lot of our 'Heavy Haulage' 75 Tons+ tractor units are CAT powered irrespective of make of the vehicle, - (they seem to share the market with Rolls Royce in 'Big Power' units - even generators).
At 5:04 did you guys just retro-fit a scraper temporarily with a water sprayer or is that some kind of special order machine? I've never seen such a thing.
Yea, 657's are the shit and/or 651's with D9's dual pushing moves the yardage. Via Experience. Just make sure you don't have rookies on the 657's or it's a LONG and FRUSTRATING day.......
Great video!!! Nothing is better then just hearing the sounds of the machines

+Gary Smedley glad you made it mate - i ran 657's in UK for a couple of decades-they are the machines of my choice

John Kirkwood depends on material but yeh they gain around 40+ tons
My favourite RUclips master chef/Baker. And I find him on the most random video. Cheers John.
@@jimmyjohnson7769 load limit is 104000 I ran many of them
I really liked this video. the sound of those lovely engines pulling their weight was just perfect
what a high capacaty scrapers good video greatings from sweden
Next time someone says my stuff is old and out of date I'm going to steer them to this video, you just can't kill older cat scrapers
Cat have been there own worst enemy sometimes and scrapers are a case in point, they just made them to good back in the day.

you tell them Jpaydirt love the channel
Old is an "A" model .....now I think there past G .....but I like B and Es ......hydrolic over hydrolic. ....not the new electric over hydraulic
Pretty fast beasts. And by the sound of it, there's some reserve power if they need more, right?
Great video with a great view. please more.
better than Nascar racing, scrapers on full bore all the time great vid thanks
Great video. Nice to ride in the cab for a change and see it from the drivers view.
looks like a lot of fun although im sure after a few years it wont seem that way but for now looks like fun i have had over 20 years of dozer, loader haul truck a d small bit of dragline ( loved every minute of it ).

unless your the lead dog the view never changes !
nice to see plenty of room to rock n roll with the big go carts...
The perfect job for BMW drivers, they'd be so damn good at it.
Great video , I drove one in UK many years ago
I love Cat 657 Scraper, Forever. I'm Cat Fan. I love smell diesels and oil rags in Cat Engine.
супер топтышь а не кировец я на таком тоже каталься с трактористом один раз круто прям как в небесном полете так высоко себя ощушать над всеми
To Cool !!! Thank You so much for Sharin !!!
One heck of an operation, how many scrapers you guys run? Hows the pay in California?
Awesome that's better then i expected. Keep up the good videos.
Awesome. Kinda felt like I was driving!
as an 627k operator i still like the 27s better do to smaller detail cuts rather than just push and pull ...27s cut streets ..lots and colisides in turning while pushing without breaking the bells...
Textbook push/pull!!
Hi,
And thanks for the upload of a great video.
I really like this kind of thing! What kind of soil is this?
copperheadmarine me to my friend
...so how are you going to top this one?!?!?!
Grins!
Where is this? It looked like the middle east, but I guess is as likely as not to be California or New Mexico?
Southern California
*****
Redlands
So I guess that the speed that you are going you are getting paid by the load
not by the hour! is that right?
By the hour ,$50@ hour
Great video.

Perhaps better parts availability and cost - certainly not better engines.

Maybe in California, they repower Cats, but here on the East Coast I've never seen a cat repowered with anything but a Cat.
I've yet to find a CAT in the UK that has done so much work it needs re-powering. They just strip the engine down and replace the worn bits.
2nd that. Kitty all the way.
Looks like fun!
excellent ! 🙌🙌🙌
DAT TURBO DOE
Ya must be wound up like a yo-yo after doing this circle for a couple of hours!
At 5:04 did you guys just retro-fit a scraper temporarily with a water sprayer or is that some kind of special order machine? I've never seen such a thing.
I dont know much about these types of machines, but i have seen similar ones in other videos, so i think it is just a standard machine from Cat.
It’s a 623 cab with a water wagon on them. Can’t remember the company that builds the tanks but they can be ordered like that from cat
What are You building ?
pretty slick.
Keep'er watered down!!
Those are Es, Bs have rounded radiators.
They are B's Rentrac retofitted the radiators to have repowered engines in california

The B was a Cadillac
the ts 24 did not sing like a 657
