Very helpful! Thank you. Do you recommend installing the Vent-a-hood to the wall then installing (quartz) slab or tile backsplash up to the bottom of the hood, or do you install the slab/tile first then mount the hood onto the slab/tile? Does one method result in better performance of the hood?

This is purely preference. I will mention the hoods need to be anchored to the wall into a stud or 2 by four behind the wall. It can be more difficult to find that stud and drill through the stone to reach that stud with the material covering the entire wall.

Thank you. This has helped me tremendously. What is the style of the hood you used in this demonstration?

how do you deal with goons who think they have to have the microwave over the stove? I know its dangerous and tacky, but how do you deal with them?

There are no building codes requiring a ducted hood in California and many other states. There was a time when most people had low output electric stovetops and low BTU ranges. These days most professional ranges are capable of BTU levels as high as 30 or 40 thousand BTU's per burner. With this kind of heat output customers are evolving there needs to include real ventilation to keep the heat and carcinogens out of the home. I haven't had too much difficulty educating the end users about the dangers of improper ventilation. The vent a hood manufacturer is now offering 3 stage ARS recirculating hoods for high rises and construction scenarios that don't allow the space needed between the ceiling line to vent there range hood. Its still common for model homes to offer the microwave hood as part of a basic kitchen appliance package. They are not deep enough to capture any of the vapors rising from your front burners, and the filter style hoods offer no capture making them even less efficient even if they are ducted. With the dangers of house fires it wont be long before the building codes in residential districts get some laws on the books. ( we hope )
