  • This is a home built Dutch cargo bike (bakfiets). I've combined an adult bike in the rear, kids bike in the front and welded a cargo box between to create an inexpensive cargo bike. I use it to carry kids, pets and groceries.
This video includes welding but don't be put off by that! I was a beginner not long ago and learned basic welding from youtube. A basic stick or flux core MIG welder can be found for $100-$150 and channels like Tim Welds are a great place to learn:

Realy appreciate your commentary throughout. Most DIYs i saw were too long or without commentary. Looking forward to building my own.

The style would fit right in here in the Netherlands, almost all bikes that normal people ride here are utilitarian bikes that need to survive outside conditions for decades. Most of them are steel frame, and not shy of a bit of rust. Good job!

A bit rat rod style but totally OK for close to nothing. 👍

Well said. It gets around fine for now and we'll probably only have a few more years using it until the kids can ride places on their own.

Tip for the brake cable, ask a bike shop for a tandem brake cable. They are quite a bit longer than the normal ones.

I wonder how are you going to replace lower headset bearings....

So far haven't had a need, but I suppose I could remove them from the headset and put in my own ball bearings at the bottom of the new "downtube" where the steering column pops out under the cargo box.

DIY danger, Babboe eat your heart out.
Notched airhose connectors as steering balljoints sound like a great way to head into incoming traffic at undesired occassions...

For real. Heim joints are pretty cheap and actually designed for this application.
