I think the whole movie is about K finding his humanity. Throughout the movie, he constantly is belittled by everyone for being a replicant, he’s not real to anyone, not even to himself. That’s why his girlfriend isn’t real either, he doesn't think he deserves a real one, and he See's himself in her. But as the story continues, and he begins to figure out that he may actually be this prophecy child, he begins to realize that maybe he is real. He starts breaking down, realizing that this whole time he was right, that what his girlfriend told him was right, that he is special. Because of this he begins acting human, he goes against what he's told, he lies, as he believes he really is real, that he has a soul. But after its revealed to him that he isn't this child, he loses hope. They tell him to kill deckard, and begins to act as he did at the beginning of the film, just following orders. But before he does, he See's his girlfriend advertising hologram, and then realizes something. He realizes this whole time, she was just as unreal as he was. But he loved her just the same. So it hits him, if I can believe she is real, why can't I believe I am real? He realizes that this whole time, he always had a soul, that everything he did while he thought he was this "child" the way he acted, that was just him. The memory of the horse was like placebo for him. You even hear the voice over say "fighting for a cause is the most human thing a person can do" which is exactly what he did. This also allows him to realize that the memory girl is the real child, as his memory of the horse is what made him realize this, as sapper said "you've never seen a miracle" that was the miracle. He then uses this freedom to go against what he is told, freeing deckard, reuniting him with his daughter, and then dying peacefully just like Roy. As he has now proven to himself. That he was always real. As he lets the snow land on him, just like the rain did on his girlfriend. He is a miracle. He is free.
Interesting observation on K’s thoughts when he sees the Joi hologram. I don’t disagree, but seeing as this scene echoed and immediately followed Dekkard’s own reunion / loss - I thought that was the point of it. K realizing that, like Dekkard, all he had at that point was his own resolve, his own agency - not determined by some outside force or programming.
Amazing insight, I agree totally and saw it the same in the cinema. However, for me the girlfriend hologram scene was more bleak to K, but the way you describe it sounds very logical, I just have to process it. Goddamnit, I love this movie so much, I don't give out 10/10 like candy, but this has instantly become one of my favortie movies of all time, not only being a worthy sequel, but even adding depth to the original... This is almost unprecented, everyone involved did such an amazing job that if Oscars don't get it, I riot. I saw the movie yesterday and I regret that I didn't have time to watch it again. But going tomorrow :D
I loved the movie. It's rare the modern big productions take their time and let the viewer live in the moment. I loved the slow pace. This might be the best movie of the year for me. Perri as part of the "i have no idea what i just saw"crowd is important. Lots of people in my viewing were irritated, bored or just didn't get it. It's no movie for everyone.
Just got back from A late show, not a lot of people there, and 2 walked out of it. I wouldn't have noticed if they weren't so loud when leaving, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. It's such a beautiful movie.
same here, Im really suprised at it's slow pacing. But tbh 2049 didnt feel slow to me, it felt just right. Im sick and tired of movies today trying so hard to tick all the boxes, plenty of action, humor, fast pacing. But BR 2049 didnt give a fuck, it was it's OWN FILM, if younguns dont like it who cares! Not everything is for them, great films "should be" for everyone, but the viewer/audience need to be able to open their mind and go in, sit down and really experience cinematic film. This is the trouble its a far superficial era today, so anyone who didnt like this or hated the pacing, tough crap, BR 2049 is a "Film", its not a typical movie.
Forever Knight yes, and no. I can see how Joi wants to please him, and be real for him to the point where she'll let him have a relationship with another woman, but also that shit was trippy and I had the most confused boner ever XD
Directors like Deni and Nolan really care about the quality of the films they make and they want to make sure to give it justice and that's what really matters.
Dave Batista was excellent in the movie despite having limited screentime he brought powerful pathos to his character Sapper Morton, he was also great in that Blade Runner prequel short Nowhere to Run
Mister Who I'm not gonna lie, Batista stood out to me because I didn't think he could pull a performance like that, but if he's only got a few on screen minutes, you'd hope he'd act his ass off XD
People just want mindless action, not gorgeous cinematography and amazing story telling. Its a shame really as we would get a lot more of these types of films if people appreciated film a lot more.
I thought it was boring (in segments). I don't think it was a bad film; just that the approach by the filmmakers meant everything happened at too slow a pace. There seemed (to me at least) to be an awful lot of scenes with stationary head shots, not much animation in the acting, and too many establishing shots that seemed to take an age to resolve. A particular sequence that I felt this most was K's approach and entry to the hotel in Las Vegas to meet Deckard - I was screaming inwardly at Gosling to just 'get on with it'. This does not mean I don't like art-house films - it just means I didn't like this one....
Sylvia Hoeks, who plays Luv, and Ana De Armas, who plays Joi, steal the show in this film. Such charismatic & electric performers. They both have amazing screen presence. Hope to see more of them.
But wasn't that kind of beautiful? I mean, yeah, devastating and brutal, but in a certain way, she was "real" in that moment. When K disconnected her from his home, from the "cloud", she became mortal, she knew that. And by finally dying (and she was an individuum, of course, because as AI she had to develop her own personality for K), she experienced the most human thing ever. I feel like Joi and her whole presence in the movie make the movie's theme so clear.
Ana De Armas was the standout for me. She had to act and interact as a hologram, and it was just incredible. She was the heart in the movie, and she wasn't even physical.
I agree, she had and incredible performance. Loved every minute of her screen time. The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the soundtrack, everything else was exceptional.
Like The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, and T2, Blade Runner 2049 expands on the worlds created, and proves that more intimate finales with just a few characters and well earned emotion is the best special effect. Loved the movie.
You know , frankly speaking , when Rachel appeared in front Deckart I wasn't jumping too. Deckard only reinforced that feeling, he was cold enough and rational to comprehend the difference in my opinion. Maybe subliminally film was telling to us "she is not the same" each replicant is unique
"Her eyes were green" lol, yes he got it and yes exactly what you said. Ford was on fire in this movie, he never over-acted, he actually wasnt given alot of lines tbh but he just nailed it. I bet when he was handed the script for this film, he probably got close to jumping in yhr air shouting YES!!! Fuckin finally something I can get my teeth into again, after all these years.
Put the Rachel-reveal in its context: Wallace had just speculated that Deckard was a replicant who has been pre-programmed to have an emotional response to Rachel. And then... viola!.... he wheels out Rachel (presumably created from the DNA in those recovered bones) and offers her to Deckard. Talk about putting your theory to the test! And the test.....fails. Deckard rejects that copy of Rachel with a flippant snark, and shows no emotion whatsoever when Wallace responds by shooting Rachel dead. And, note also, it is at that point that Wallace decides that Deckard has to be moved off-world before he could be tortured for information. Apparently there is no problem shooting replicants on the spot (after all, they are just "things"), but even in 2049 it is still a crime to subject a person to torture.
If he replicated Rachel from her DNA, why would her eyes be different? Also, what about her memories. It's like you had a cat and that cat died, but you find something almost identical at a pet store. It's not your cat you have cherished so many memories with. Also, Decker is old enough at this point to be her father. Sidenote, I'm 46 and watched the original movie 30 years ago and own the original soundtrack. Blade Runner was very influential in my life development.
Agreed and boasting how you he is such a fan of the film and he has waited "30 years" for this sequel yet he can't even get the name of the source material right just irks me to no end. Also for me personally, in a lot of these video discussions he comes off as a guy who doesn't really have his "own" opinions or ideas about topics they discuss, he really seems like a guy who tries very hard to fit in and please everyone around him but he doesn't have an original thought to share with anyone. I didn't even finish this video because he bugs me that much, just can't take dude seriously.
thefleece 2 Fuck you, I fully understood what they were going for and still didn’t feel much emotion. Yes it was sad, almost beating me over the head with sadness in the last act. Art is interpreted however you want it to be. Just because someone doesn’t share your own opinion doesn’t mean they’re dumb.
So far it's a two way race between Dunkirk and BR2049. I think Runner will ultimately take the nod. This movie is what film is all about. This movie will create future directors. Nothing about it was bad. It is truly a perfect movie.
He get's it this time. There is no competition really, he has just done some of the most beautiful scenes in all of cinema history. This year he is in his own league, he totally knocked it out of the park.
agree, he is so overdue, he must know everyone in LA by now! and we actually looked up the films he lost to, to see why it has taken so long. A list here, what do you think? www.popculturebeast.com/roger-deakins/ Some years you can kind of see it, but losing to CGI? That's just not right!
In my opinion the question on whether or not Joe is the son is still left up in the air. They could have been twins. There was DNA for both a boy and a girl and even though the film leads you to believe that was to throw others off the trail of finding the child, Dennis never gives you a scene that denies that it could be twins. When you go back and look at it in the scene where he is showing her the memory and asking if it is real, she never answers the question. She just cries. This leaves the viewer to interpret it in a number of different ways. By the end of the film many might would say it is her memory she put in him, but remember she said that was illegal and was stunned when Joe asked her if she had ever planted any of her own memories. I think the reason she cries is because in that moment she realizes it's her brother. Remember "Sometimes to love someone you have to remain a stranger." ;)
Mothman Media I was thinking that as soon as he was told about the daughter.. I thought k would have brought the info up that u stated up to deckard but didn't.. although no one mentions anything about a son besides the DNA match near the beginning..
What makes Jared Letos character so much better is because he IS blind, his HAND is the lady Perry has praised so much. She is an extension of his character because of his lack of vision. It's great. He played what he should have exactly. If he was being over emotional, I would have been worried.
I'm obsessed with BR2049's relationship to Pinocchio. Working on a video pointing out all the comparisons and hidden meanings. Might need a couple of weeks for this one.
It's creating a mythology like a biblical story. They all have her memories and feel like they are children of Deckard as opposed to Tyrell or Wallace. The relationship between K and Joi was one of my favorite parts of the film, as she is his only outlet to show emotion. I'm going to go see it again tomorrow before it leaves the theater.
Blade RUnner 2049 is a triumph of sci fi cinema and is one of the greatest achievements in modern cinema history. I was absolutely blown away and this movie surpassed my hopes in every category/ Deakins has outdone himself and delivered quite possibly the greatest cinematography in any film I have ever seen. Extra kudos to the soundtrack and sound design. 11/10... 20/10!!! I cannot praise this enough. INstantly a modern masterpiece.
How important was it to watch the prequel shorts first? Although Jared Leto's short didn't have that much of an impact, I felt the Bautista one (2048) made the scene in the actual film mean a lot more...and vice versa too. The anime (2022), however, was quite important. A lot of things that was said in the film would have been completely lost on me if I didn't watch the Anime short. Is that a good thing or not?
The replicant birthing scene was really haunting and fascinating to watch in my opinion. No, It didn't add a whole lot to the plot but it was just enchanting to watch.
@collider. Jared's Leto character did not create the first generation of unlimited lifespan replicants. Tyrell created the Nexus 8 which had unlimited lifespans and were referenced to in the Short Anime Blade Runner 2022 which is cannon. K in fact was hunting down the last "blight" of the Nexus 8's which caused the "blackout" of 2022 (referenced in the movie) by setting of an EMP in the atmosphere over L.A. which wiped out all records including those of replicants. The replicants of that time fought back over a human supremacy movement which happened before 2022, where many replicants were being lynched in the streets because the Voight Kampf test was now handheld and a human could easily identify a replicant. I suggest you watch this 10 minute short before making a final review. It's a lot of backstory to an important question about what constitutes "humanity".
@Alexander, my original comment was made to point out there were some inaccuracies in the review due to Collider not having seen the shorts. While I agree with you that it's not mandatory it is Canon and a vision which Deni wanted people to see. When Jared Leto, and Dave Bautista star in those shorts with BR2049 set pieces, I consider that more than multimedia and part of the "film".
I loved Jared Leto's God complex and the robot thing that Perri said made him so mysterious and interesting. Like, he didn't look like a villain, he looked like exactly what Frosty said: a genius on a different level of genius.
Just watched this movie and I m in love with this movie.....Easily the best movie of the year😍😍😍. It will definitely amass a cult following in the subsequent years. Rock the Oscars Denis and Deakins🏆🏆🏆
Minus the 2-3 plot holes...which are actually pretty important plot holes the movie was fucking AMAZING! Seen it twice last night once at 7pm and again at 1010pm. (yes no life) I also saw it the second time on a few hits of acid and let me tell you DEACON's cinematography literally immerse you and when you are slightly visually enhanced due to narcotics haha....ITS EVEN BETTER OMG. Almost as good as life changing good. Denis toally killed it as far as camera direction and story board movement. I have not seen a movie this well made in about 5 years...DUNKIRK come close as far as EPIC scope of things but BR2049 does that and simultaneously keeps you invested behind the visuals with the LORE. THIS movie deserves at least 3-4 academy awards...oh and Harrison Fords performance is his best in over a decade....thats no joke either. My only complaint was Jared fucking Leto. He didnt capture his role as much as I wanted him too. I mean he is hardly even in the film at that and when he is its just over exaggerated acting. Other than that I give this film a 9.8/10
Perri gave 2049 a 7/10, while praising Power Rangers as one of the best movies of the year.... Why is she part of this spoiler review? I get it's important to have different perspectives, but not ridiculous ones. I love her, but keep her away from this MASTERPIECE.
I like the first film but haven’t seen it in a long time. I FUCKING LOVED 2049. It was an immersive experience. Haven’t been so drawn into a movie like this in a long time. Those almost 3 hours were perfection. I was left in awe.
I like Bladerunner 2049 over the original. The main story in Bladerunner is really boring, all the characters except for the replicants are not that interesting, and the relationship between Rachael and Deker is really forced. I did like the philosophical stuff about what it feels to be human and the world around it.
Deckard and Rachel’s relationship was kinda weird and clumsy but K and Joi were brilliant. You could feel the chemistry and a genuine feeling they had for each other. The director and actors did a good job there.
Επαμεινωνδας Κοσμας Come on, Roy and Luv are apples and oranges. Roy was instrumental to the plot in the first one. Luv was more a grunt to Wallace’s motives, to put it bluntly.
I guess she gives the normie reaction. As a cyberpunk otaku, she strains my patience/tolerance, but then again I chill out in the Bradbury Building and Union Station once or twice a month like a church so... yeah, I'm a fanboy lol.
can someone explain what the whole vision was the girl saw from K? She started tearing up then he got all mad saying it had to be real. i was thinking that was gonna be a big part of the movie but i dont think it ever got brought back up and they never showed what it was ..
The weird thing was I thought this was a WB movie but the opening credit says Sony/Columbia. I checked IMDB and it says WB was involved but not sure how much.
With all the Outlaw stuff I always tend to forget the brilliance of Rocha talking about movies he loves passionately. I saw the movie yesterday and their talk felt like a discussion among (well educated) friends right after the movie. Thanks guys and keep up the good work!
Blade Runner 2049 fuckin great film, and I say "film" this is NOT a movie. I really want to shake Villeneuve's hand, he is a masterful director. He has managed to achieve something very few directors do today, he has captured the exact same feel, tone and look of the original Blade Runner, but he has crafted a different and refreshing story. With The Force Awakens, yes it has the same look and feel, but that movie, as a sequel in a saga has too much familiarity to the point its almost a carbon-copy of a previous epiosde. Harisson Ford almost looked like he could act that role with his eyes closed in TFA, but here in 2049, he turns out a outstanding performance. 2049 is not over-complicated and its not simplistic either, its amazing how well its actually turned out because I heard the original Blade Runner wasnt given the credit it deserved at the time, and under performed at the box office in the eighties, it was too ambiguous, maybe too slow for audiences of that time to appreciate. Today we have sophisticated audienes, but we also have incredibly "superficial" audiences, especially in the younger generation. So I was just expecting this film to be quite fast-paced and heavy on action, in-order to please the audiences of today. BUT Blade Runner 2049 is nothing like this, its got a solid pace in my view, its not fast but its not really slow, its got great action. But its not dependant on that action, its got beautiful visuals, and you know when special effects can feel ott, or just too over-done in my movies today? 2049 has great visuals that look very well done, and totally realistic. Im actually not a fan of Ryan Goslings, Ive never been keen on him, that stoic-style he has, his face hes always came off as dull and bland a actor to me; but he is truly great in this movie. I actually felt sorry for his character in the twist, I was rooting for him. BR 2049 has actually got me into checking out some of Gosling's other movies, but I think I'll give LaLa Land a miss though (not into musicals) lol. Im in my thirties myself and Im not too worried about older audiences, not going to see this movie, but I implore all the younger generations out there, GO SEE THIS MOVIE! Plz, take your gf/bf, take a friend, take your mom, just go and see it, switch your Iphone off for just 2hrs of your life, and get immersed in a experience. Sit back, open your mind and allow yourself to enjoy a proper film, the way truly great cinema should be. Its truly a great film. Blade Runner 2049 - 10/10
dysonlu I dunno, I was very much looking forward to his Dune adaptation, but after two hours and forty five minutes of Blade Runner 2049, I feel like I have a good idea of what Vileneuve/Deakins would do visually with Arrakis and Geidi Prime. That said, I'll still be there opening day if Dune ever happens, regardless of director or DP.
It was a good film. But I think they try to make the boundaries between humans and replicants too blurry, and the film suffers for that because you are not sure how to relate. In the first film the emotions of the replicants were a stark contrast to the humans. Plus there are 'intimate moments' between pieces of technology that are dull and questionable. The worst thing they did is they purposefully kept the 'Deckard is a replicant' thing alive by being ambiguous about that. Without the clear boundaries, the quality of the film suffers.
If you had read Dick's masterpiece "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" you would know that the blurred lines between what's human and not human is kind of the point. The emotions of the replicants weren't that much of a stark contrast in the first film, with the exception of Leon. Batty, Priss, and Zora all experienced apparent fear in the film, something that a typical robot isn't thought to have experienced. They also talk about "living your life in fear" many times throughout the film. Roy even feels genuine sadness, anger and internal pain in the movie, especially when Priss dies. The monologue at the end of Bladerunner also blurs the lines between human and non-human with the implication of memories and experiences in androids.
The worst thing they could have done is answer the Deckard replicant question, because all of the ambiguity from the original would have been stripped. The fact that you wanted them to force closure for that question just illustrates that you can't appreciate subtle story-telling.
Just watched the film and my memory is a little fuzzy on what happens to Jared Letos character in the end. Is he going to continue his plan or has it now been comprised?
Great review guys - I need to see it again to fully to digest it.. Great dystopian noir film the score is still playing in my head.. Loved it Thanks for breaking it down.. I'm with Pear I need to see it again
im surprised no review has talked about the conclusion w jared letos character. Did I miss something when watching or was there no resolution with him??
The fact that perri Is here and not Schnepp is a joke... P.S peri wtf were you talking about in your non spoiler review? Jared Leto is awesome in this movie
I would like to think she was really sick. Because I like the idea that the first "naturally conceived" replicant was weak and flawed. Only with time and evolution, after a few generations, do they become physically stronger and more perfect.
Humberto Guzman Could be both. She could be a danger to the public and a carrier of some weird pathogen due to her being the product of a replicant and a human, or a replicant and a replicant, depending on how you look at it.
I guess I've now seen this 4 times in the past 5 weeks and i think it's a classic because it never gets old for me. I think it's the quality and artistry of the visuals together with the emotional side of the whole thing. It's the re-watchable masterpiece that the first one was back in the 80s. It's art, I guess.
the most "vivid" experience after seeing this movie its that it presented the most weirdest threesome sex scene i ever saw in the movie...(if u know what i meant)... hehehe (off course in a good way)
Is Dr. Tyrell ( from BR 1) Letto character? Did he survived from the eye plugged and he upgrade his face to hide his identity? He switch his identity because of the tyrell corp went bankrupt, so he start Wallace corp.
yes the eyes. Its Tyrell. Also its pretty obvious K is Deckards son. Rachel had twins but only the female can reproduce so they don't need K alive. The replicant resistance movement leader is lying to K
James Grey how do you know that ? If I'm remembering it right, k was a clone of the daughter of Rachael to distract people searching for her. Also, I didn't really get how and why k has the memories of the daughter, did you get that ?
Roland Deschain implanted memories. It is implied that all members of the replicant resistance movement have them when Mackenzie's character looks at the wooden horse.
Hey can someone enlighten me on the whole Joi/Luv/Luv killing Joi/He has to kill Luv symbolism, I need it be synthesized so I can wrap my head around it
There is only one thing that bothered me. Why the fuck does the badass woman leave K alive at the hotel? Like she kills everyone and everything. But she just leaves K be TWICE without making sure he is dead. Movie needs to progress I guess.... other than that, it’s a classic in making
ikamts2 she killed Coco and Joshi because they tried to stop her from doing her job. She already had Deckard, her job was pretty much done so she didn't need to kill K. There was nothing he could do to stop her, well, until he got rescued, but she didn't know that.
Frosty mentioned a spin off in the blade runner universe. I heard the 90s Kurt Russell movie, soldier' is set in this movie universe. Can anyone confirm this?
Honestly thought it was a perfect movie, this movie however set up a sequal with that army of replicants, and dear god i hope they do nothing with that shit
Saw this last night and it's a good movie. So rare to see a sequel that taps into all the themes of the original so perfectly without seeming like a retread, losing its way, or falling into bombastic sequel tropes. It's one of the better movies to come out this year so far in my opinion. I will say I expect to enjoy this movie more a) upon a 2nd or 3rd viewing b) from the comfort of my own home. This was visually stunning and worth seeing in theaters, don't get me wrong, but it's also very long, slow paced, and contemplative, like the first movie was.
I want to start out by saying I really liked this movie (8.5/10). But I do think it had some flaws, though I find none of them to be major. I feel some of the scenes could have been cut. The movie felt like it was about 20-30 minutes too long. My opinion on this might change once I watch it at home. This is the kind of movie I prefer to watch home alone, so I can just completely lose myself into the film with no distractions, like people checking their phones, talking, chewing popcorn or whatever... Things like that really takes me out of the experience. And the chairs at my theater aren't really comfortable either. The other flaw and probably my biggest one was the score. I didn't think it had the magic like the original Blade Runner, and there were too many long completely silent scenes. Again, this might translate much better when I get to watch the blu-ray at home. I rarely find long silent scenes to work at the movie theater, because most times it drags me out of the experience. But all in all I thought it was a really good movie, and I'm glad to say that it didn't do anything to lessen the story and experience of the original Blade Runner. In fact it heightened it, which is what a good sequel or prequel is supposed to do.
I know in one of the promos they did a subtle tease to Rachel Sean Young's character with a photograph at Deckard's home. When Rocha said about what if K was Deckard's son for some reason I thought about that to and it was a far fetched idea but with some of the shorts they released especially the one with Niander Wallace as to how he has made the replicant almost human like so the possibility of Rachel having a child with Deckard could be a possibility.
Eric EDWRD YES! I'd rather Johann Johannson been given a chance instead of Hans. Only two of his pieces were memorable. The one used during Gosling and Joi's ride along the wall, and Gosling's chase on Luv and Deckard.
What do you recommend for someone isnt fan of this movie because I never watch blade runner at all. Should I watch the original or final version of old blade runner?
I loved this movie! I'm a big fan of the original so I might be biased. I didn't think it was a slow movie at all. I was engrossed in the cinematography and story.
I absolutely love this film. I agree the first one is a bit slow. I was so glued to the screen here that it felt like a 90 minute film. Can't wait to go back again. Also, I believe there will be a sequel. There's a whole army of replicants who say they are going to reveal the child to the world when the time is right. Didn't think I'd want another one but God, I want another one!
I wondered if Joi might have downloaded herself at the casino there was a lot of tech in that room and she was all over it. and did she give a hint to K or was it just a realization of her standard programing when the hologram said Joe
Excellent review guys. Just watched the film and searched for a great review. Watched a few. Your three person perspective is exceptional. You have a new subscriber.
I'm surprised I haven't seen a comment about this yet from die hard fans of the original but if you have seen 'dangerous days ' or other making of docs on the original the opening scene with Sapper Morton is an homage to what the original opening that was planned for blade runner, the real difference is in the original story deckard would of killed the farmer without conversation.
He is free.
chase whichard Great comment. I agree 100%
Beautiful, I agree completely. Great analysis of a modern masterpiece.
Thanks maaan
It's a masterpiece. I sat there with my mouth wide open from start to finish
Did you catch any flies?
coz Costello I was sleeping the whole time
I can see that, based off your profile pic.
Masterpiece? You might go a bit far there.
Triple Mexican 619 dweeb? LMAO I think I hear ur mum calling u for ur dinner
If Deakins doesn't get the oscar for Cinematography, the Academy will lose all credibility for me.
James Nolan TFA was subpar and Rogue One wasn't the best. What Star Wars are you talking about?
The man is due!!!
James Nolan the original Star Wars!? What the fuck
Ditto. Deakins should have won for "Skyfall". That movie was the most beautiful James Bond movie ever.
credibility HAHHA HAHA AHAHAH HAHAHAHHAHA
Adam White YES movie flowed beautifully great acting by EVERYONE
Schnorks did anyone though that the sex scene is kinda weird or ackward?
Forever Knight yes, and no. I can see how Joi wants to please him, and be real for him to the point where she'll let him have a relationship with another woman, but also that shit was trippy and I had the most confused boner ever XD
Directors like Deni and Nolan really care about the quality of the films they make and they want to make sure to give it justice and that's what really matters.
i always see them on the same level and how their approach to filmmaking is very similar to me.
That’s why this is more than just a movie coming out. It’s an event.
It's only an event because they are overhyping the crap out of these movies now. It gives the illusion of something important happening.
Raghu Seetharaman this was a fantastic movie, but this is not his best, sicario, enemy, arrival and prisoners are all better
Both Directors can translate independet plots and filmmaking to big 100 Million Dollar Blockbusters and larger audiences
You're right, Dave Batista is growing as an actor and did an excellent job with his character in this movie.
Mister Who
100% agree
Mister Who Agree. He was also awesome in Spectre.
Dave Batista rumored to play a T-800 in the next terminator movie
Very surprising to see lots of people who think it's boring and hollow.
People are not used to watch films like this anymore.
People just want mindless action, not gorgeous cinematography and amazing story telling. Its a shame really as we would get a lot more of these types of films if people appreciated film a lot more.
It brought me back to how movies used to be shot. Scenes take their time and conversations are allowed to breathe. It's a masterpiece.
That's the original, not the sequel
Rob W spoilers!
I felt soo bad for joi when she got crushed 😭
It sure is a bleak world but full of gorgeous women.
MultiBum123 that really hurt. It was a damn shame. They made you really care for the character.
MultiBum123 especially K's reaction. You can see him in pain even though his face is in shadow.
I just can't understand how some people can find this movie boring.
Sumirin it just was for me personally not my cup of tea but it was visually stunning & beautiful to look at though & I loved the score.
Because movies are subjective?
Sumirin I can but I didn't lol
THIS REVIEW WILL BE LOST LIKE
TEARS
IN
RAIN.
Like The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, and T2, Blade Runner 2049 expands on the worlds created, and proves that more intimate finales with just a few characters and well earned emotion is the best special effect. Loved the movie.
Randy Q I rather watch those other sequels then Blade Runner 2049 just not my cup of tea
You know , frankly speaking , when Rachel appeared in front Deckart I wasn't jumping too. Deckard only reinforced that feeling, he was cold enough and rational to comprehend the difference in my opinion. Maybe subliminally film was telling to us "she is not the same" each replicant is unique
Exactly, the point is that they are people, not things. You can make a copy but that is not the same, it is just a copy.
I wanted to see this movie again as soon as it finished. I mean as soon as it finished.
M PG I rather watch The Godfather 1& 2 just my opinion I respect the blade runner films but not my cup of tea
I saw it 3x in 6 days.
How you talk about Blade Runner without Schnepp?
Electric Sleep
Villenooooooof
They are all over the Internet
Yeah, I caught that to...do androids dream of electric SHEEP.
Randy Moore I wouldn't take it that far. He had a lot of shit to say and he gave a really great review. Show some respect for the man
Anyone notice that Wallace is blind and Tyrell died from having his eyes gauged out?
Good call.
Oh shit
Oh dang i didnt notice that
2049 - A true sequel! (And, yes, Deakins must get the Oscar - if there's any justice!!!)
Still don't understand perri's hate for Leto's performance. Jared Leto was really good in this film
Mac Cooper I liked Leto's Wallace . He serves the story well
Mac Cooper ageed
Mac Cooper agreed
Mac Cooper yeah liked Leto in it too.
Mac Cooper Too obnoxious and pretentious.
Teared up 4 times during the movie and some idiots here say its hard to get connected emotinally to the movie.
Holy shit. What is your deal? People didn't have the same connection to the movie as you did so they're idiots?
Me too. I was pretty much an emotional wreck at the end. In the best way.
thefleece 2 Fuck you, I fully understood what they were going for and still didn’t feel much emotion. Yes it was sad, almost beating me over the head with sadness in the last act. Art is interpreted however you want it to be. Just because someone doesn’t share your own opinion doesn’t mean they’re dumb.
128 minute long film would connect better and save 2 hours 30 for a director's cut.
So far it's a two way race between Dunkirk and BR2049. I think Runner will ultimately take the nod. This movie is what film is all about. This movie will create future directors. Nothing about it was bad. It is truly a perfect movie.
Movie of the year! An Oscar for Roger Deakins please!!!!!!!
Peter Gallagher If Deakins doesn’t get the Oscar, there is no justice in this world.
He really should get an Oscar
He get's it this time. There is no competition really, he has just done some of the most beautiful scenes in all of cinema history. This year he is in his own league, he totally knocked it out of the park.
Peter Gallagher I'm not a pervert but I think one of the scenes that people will talk about is the sex scene it's way out of this world..
agree, he is so overdue, he must know everyone in LA by now! and we actually looked up the films he lost to, to see why it has taken so long.
Brillantly put.
I thought the rebel woman leader witnessed Rachel deliver a baby girl.....not twins or baby boy
bataviaborobudur Maybe she lied or had her memory altered?
Excellent ideology
What makes Jared Letos character so much better is because he IS blind, his HAND is the lady Perry has praised so much. She is an extension of his character because of his lack of vision. It's great. He played what he should have exactly. If he was being over emotional, I would have been worried.
Hate how all of you guys overlooked Dave's Nexus 8 character performance. I see Dave in an entire new light. He was amazing in short film as well!
Husnan Chaudhry
He was awesome
Just saw it on imax...amazing, going to see it again as it really immerses you into that world. Needs to be seen on the big screen without a doubt
Art Guy saw it left the theater to watch my personal favorite sequels Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back & The Godfather Part 2
Your lucky you can get to see it in imax, only one in my country and its 7 hours away!!!
I'm obsessed with BR2049's relationship to Pinocchio. Working on a video pointing out all the comparisons and hidden meanings. Might need a couple of weeks for this one.
Flick Connection there's even a "Monstro the whale" scene at the end, with their version of Pinocchio and Japetto, (Deckard and K)
Absolutely loved this film but I don’t think that Harrison Ford deserves an Oscar for it...
His acting was OK, but not Oscar material even remotely. It was probably the first actual effort he's put into a role in over 20 years.
Ford just played himself. He couldnt even bother put on a proper outfit. Just jeans and a tshirt. He did better in The Force Awakens
He was better in Blade Runner 2049 than he was in The Force Awakens.
Who Dat Ninja thought his scene with Wallace is brilliant though imo
Blade RUnner 2049 is a triumph of sci fi cinema and is one of the greatest achievements in modern cinema history. I was absolutely blown away and this movie surpassed my hopes in every category/ Deakins has outdone himself and delivered quite possibly the greatest cinematography in any film I have ever seen. Extra kudos to the soundtrack and sound design. 11/10... 20/10!!! I cannot praise this enough. INstantly a modern masterpiece.
michael ponder greatest movie of all time. 👌🏻
Yeah Dave Batista was amazing in it, that prequel short showed more of his character Sapper Morton and we get to know a little of his background
The Bautista short was basically a part of the movie. He has turned out to be an amazing actor.
I think Leto’s performance was pretty neutral. It wasn’t the best out of the movie, but it also didn’t detract from anything.
because they didnt use it properly or enough, it had no impact on the movie because the story was weak
The replicant birthing scene was really haunting and fascinating to watch in my opinion. No, It didn't add a whole lot to the plot but it was just enchanting to watch.
please explain
He's only in it for ten minutes. (shrugs)
Spencer Coriaty uh I thought his performance was pretty great
Did anyone else see the spaceship Silocu (spelt wrong) from Aliens (yes sequel) pointing towards camera off to right when K was flying along the wall?
nstacpoole don't think that was the Silocu.
Hurry Calls at least you saw what I was talking about!!!
I wish it was longer 💗
I wish it didn't end.
cyberpunkghost it flew by for me, I was a bit surprised at the ending tbh
cyberpunkghost that's what she said....
There was originally a four-hour cut. With an intermission, I would totally be on board for that version.
I'm not a "hard-core" bladerunner fan, I actually just saw the first film a couple of days ago. I don't get where Perri is coming from..
Leto is Tyrell that's why hes blind his eyes got squished by Roy Batty
Those short films were not optional for someone pretending to review this movie.
James Grey no. Just no.
@Alexander, my original comment was made to point out there were some inaccuracies in the review due to Collider not having seen the shorts.
While I agree with you that it's not mandatory it is Canon and a vision which Deni wanted people to see. When Jared Leto, and Dave Bautista
star in those shorts with BR2049 set pieces, I consider that more than
multimedia and part of the "film".
Other than that I give this film a 9.8/10
As a fan of cowboy bebop I was happy with the short animated movie. And when I saw the end of 2049 I was like "okay Villeneuve is a fan too".
A live action Beebop is in the works.
ok replicant's aren't technology. they are manufactured, not technology. they are essentially humans.
Someone loves Power Rangers way too much. I love 2049 so much I've seen it 3 times now.
Perri gave 2049 a 7/10, while praising Power Rangers as one of the best movies of the year.... Why is she part of this spoiler review? I get it's important to have different perspectives, but not ridiculous ones. I love her, but keep her away from this MASTERPIECE.
She sounded like she needed to get laid,
80BDBL who would be mad enough to get with her tho?
Thats the point! NO ONE ! :)
She bullcrapped her whole response.. she hated the movie but now she backtracks because of her colleagues positive review of the film.
80BDBL you're totally right. No hate towards her, I just demand more respect for this film. It was honestly incredible
There’s no need for a sequel in my opinion. But, seeing New York in a Blade Runner world sounds pretty cool.
It's Deckard.
MultiMetalmilitia666 All the humans character are like that because its to show that replicants are more human then the humans themselves
Deckard and Rachel’s relationship was kinda weird and clumsy but K and Joi were brilliant. You could feel the chemistry and a genuine feeling they had for each other. The director and actors did a good job there.
Perhaps you should sit on it a bit before such a claim.
But to each their own. Luv has nothing on Roy Batty though. It's not even close.
Επαμεινωνδας Κοσμας Come on, Roy and Luv are apples and oranges. Roy was instrumental to the plot in the first one. Luv was more a grunt to Wallace’s motives, to put it bluntly.
A visual, audible, sensual, and existential, dreamlike, symphonic, masterpiece of futuristic noir cinema... Oh dear... I just messed myself...
You guys really should have waited for schnepp, no disrespect to Perri but schnepp should be on that table instead of her
I guess she gives the normie reaction. As a cyberpunk otaku, she strains my patience/tolerance, but then again I chill out in the Bradbury Building and Union Station once or twice a month like a church so... yeah, I'm a fanboy lol.
Agreed. Schnepp is such a fan of the original
MultiBum123 even Riley.
Absolutely. She gave this movie a 7/10, laughable.
I thought he would be on the spoiler panel for sure, I can't watch this, love Perri but she doesn't belong here or frosty for that matter.
can someone explain what the whole vision was the girl saw from K? She started tearing up then he got all mad saying it had to be real. i was thinking that was gonna be a big part of the movie but i dont think it ever got brought back up and they never showed what it was ..
Apparently Denis originally wanted David Bowie for Jared Leto's role.. Imagine how brilliant that would have been =O
The weird thing was I thought this was a WB movie but the opening credit says Sony/Columbia. I checked IMDB and it says WB was involved but not sure how much.
Why is there no Schnepp for the review?
Comic con
Maybe he didn't like it....maybe he needs to see it again before he gives his opinion, either way can't wait to hear his views.
"do androids dream of electric SLEEP?"
30 years and you still can't get the book title right?
you gotta be shittin' me
I wish Villenueve would do a new version of TRON.
soulrider64 He hates shooting with a blue screen. So likely never gonna happen. Dune, on the other hand...
dysonlu I dunno, I was very much looking forward to his Dune adaptation, but after two hours and forty five minutes of Blade Runner 2049, I feel like I have a good idea of what Vileneuve/Deakins would do visually with Arrakis and Geidi Prime.
That said, I'll still be there opening day if Dune ever happens, regardless of director or DP.
Well, it could look different. Look at Prisoners -- very different from BR2049. I think they are flexible enough to make Dune "uniquely Dune".
the tron series is so meh tbh
Really loved it. Wish there was a little more resolution with some story lines but i understand itd be too long.
"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep"
The one bit I was a little hazy on was what the motives of love and wallace. I wasn't sure what they were trying to do can someone help me?
It was a good film. But I think they try to make the boundaries between humans and replicants too blurry, and the film suffers for that because you are not sure how to relate. In the first film the emotions of the replicants were a stark contrast to the humans. Plus there are 'intimate moments' between pieces of technology that are dull and questionable. The worst thing they did is they purposefully kept the 'Deckard is a replicant' thing alive by being ambiguous about that. Without the clear boundaries, the quality of the film suffers.
I actually think it's all the opposite.
Most people are married to the idea of superficiality being good cinema nowadays.
Nexus 6 were much less advanced than Nexus 8.
Just watched the film and my memory is a little fuzzy on what happens to Jared Letos character in the end. Is he going to continue his plan or has it now been comprised?
Thanks for the video but how is they are having this without John Schnepp? His the biggest fan of Blade Runner of the Collider crew.
Great review guys - I need to see it again to fully to digest it.. Great dystopian noir film the score is still playing in my head.. Loved it Thanks for breaking it down.. I'm with Pear I need to see it again
goddamn this was a great movie!
straightedge veganbel I know Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back. The Godfather Part 2 best Movie sequels
Agreed! Bladerunner 2049 is a masterpiece!
im surprised no review has talked about the conclusion w jared letos character. Did I miss something when watching or was there no resolution with him??
also one little thing that was great was bautista smashing K against the wall
The fact that perri Is here and not Schnepp is a joke... P.S peri wtf were you talking about in your non spoiler review? Jared Leto is awesome in this movie
I was just about to say the same thing
Schnepp might not have been available.
Leto was fine - but his role was secondary. His role could have been easily edited out. It had no resolution.
Nothing wrong with Perri being on the panel. I would rather have people with different perspectives. But I do want to hear schnepp's opinion too.
Leto was plain bad in this film
Only in the the Blade Runner universe where you can see Luv kill Joi.
So was Deckards daughter actually sick? Or was that just a cover to keep her hidden? I'm still not sure.
I would like to think she was really sick. Because I like the idea that the first "naturally conceived" replicant was weak and flawed. Only with time and evolution, after a few generations, do they become physically stronger and more perfect.
Humberto Guzman
Could be both.
It's art, I guess.
the most "vivid" experience after seeing this movie its that it presented the most weirdest threesome sex scene i ever saw in the movie...(if u know what i meant)... hehehe (off course in a good way)
It was boring
Kaeben indeed better sequels to watch over again
The 3some was so trippy XDD
Fransiscus Djaja dude same here
Hahahahaha I actually really liked the music for that scene!
It is implied that all members of the replicant resistance movement have them when Mackenzie's character looks at the wooden horse.
east coast midnight viewing squad, just got back from the film, what a feast for the eyes
Movie needs to progress I guess.... other than that, it’s a classic in making
ikamts2 you mean Deckard's place?
She doesn't need K to live or die, she just needs Deckard.
Hurry Calls but why leave him alive if she doesn’t need K? She’s killed any other person she comes across
ikamts2 she killed Coco and Joshi because they tried to stop her from doing her job.
It's Hampton Fancher, not Fincher. I thought you were supposed to be fan!? And doesn't Gaff use a bit of City Speak?
RighteousBrother Yes. He uses cityspeak for retirement. That scene was great. As soon as I saw something in his hands I knew what he was doing lol.
After watching the movie,, I really want to own it on Bluray for sure
I know in one of the promos they did a subtle tease to Rachel Sean Young's character with a photograph at Deckard's home. When Rocha said about what if K was Deckard's son for some reason I thought about that to and it was a far fetched idea but with some of the shorts they released especially the one with Niander Wallace as to how he has made the replicant almost human like so the possibility of Rachel having a child with Deckard could be a possibility.
The score was weak compared to the iconic vangelis score
Eric EDWRD YES! I'd rather Johann Johannson been given a chance instead of Hans. Only two of his pieces were memorable. The one used during Gosling and Joi's ride along the wall, and Gosling's chase on Luv and Deckard.
meh I disagree. its a mix of touches of vangelis and mixed with brutal newer sounds. Those performance car revs used as sound.
Solid Vape Reviews okay, Sea Wall was fucking great I admit. But the rest...
Hurry Calls He did a score. It didn't fit. He will probably release some of the music he made at some point.
Zimmer score was terrible in this movie. Listen to this one: ruclips.net/video/RGTzz-d0qyA/видео.html
I also noticed how the light and shadows weaved into the story and certain key emotional scenes; it was beautiful.
Why is perry in every video?
Because she is awesome.
What do you recommend for someone isnt fan of this movie because I never watch blade runner at all. Should I watch the original or final version of old blade runner?
ADFX Definitely watch the final cut
Watch the final version
That was shawn young. De-aged a la marvel movies
Her eyes were the wrong color, though, so they had to put her down.
Terry Light except it wasn't so obvious.
It wasn't, apparently. She was completely CGI
Seán not the dirty English spelling "Shawn".
I loved this movie! I'm a big fan of the original so I might be biased. I didn't think it was a slow movie at all. I was engrossed in the cinematography and story.
Perry hates it you can tell she's just on the band wagon to aviod the hate but she really dislikes it lol
I remember when power rangers and IT came out she was way over the top with enthusiasm but not the same with BR2049 ....your right
She likes more fun movies.
What makes good movies is great Stories. Phillip Dick is the star and that wonderful insightful story that was written in what year?
#OSCARFORDEAKINS!!!
One of the best films ever made. A masterpiece, just like the original.
2049 was the best film experience I've ever been through. Enjoyed this review. Cells Interlink
I really enjoyed the film but I felt that the writing in the first film was more clever and thought-provoking and had a better soundtrack
I wondered if Joi might have downloaded herself at the casino there was a lot of tech in that room and she was all over it. and did she give a hint to K or was it just a realization of her standard programing when the hologram said Joe
torozon torozon Shes programmed to say that
I now find it funny that one of the most emotional moments for me was when Luv killed Joi in front of K, who is obviously not OK with it.
Hector Santiano m
Excellent review guys. Just watched the film and searched for a great review. Watched a few. Your three person perspective is exceptional. You have a new subscriber.
Japanese men will really really love this film. The relationship that Ryan Gosling has in this film will have them swooning. ;D
Do Androids Dream of Electric "Sleep"? YOu did say sleep? Oh and first. I think.
Yes - I thought he said 'sleep' too!!
What a joke
I kinda agree with Perri about Jared Leto. wanted him to be a little more human.
Joi was amazing.
