thank-you, thank-you for this video. Our LG gas dryer was doing the same thing. We replaced the main control panel, and it fixed the problem. There is no telling what would have happened if we had not come across your video. bless you.
Great video I replaced the gas valve twice and it still did the same thing in the video. I replaced the circuit board and now works like it did when I first bought it...Thank you for this video!!
@reidjam7 No, this dryer had a defective control board. The scary thing is the dryer operated properly (clothes were drying) although we could had easily had an explosion. Anyone who has an LG dryer and notices a natural gas smell, should check for this defect.
Fantastic Video! I have the same issue. Scary. I shut down this dryer. I researched this and LG has a recall on many of its dryers. I called and they will replace gas valve. Thank you much Steve ! Family is safe!
In the case shown in the video, the gas valve is fine, it's the control signal going to it that is letting the valve open when it shouldn't. Be careful.
Interesting thing is I have a Maytag DG306 gas dryer from 1973 along with it’s matching companion Maytag A606 washer I paid $30 last year, and despite them being 47 years old I have no problems with them at all. The Maytag DG306 doesn’t use a igniter like this dryer that has it controlled by a circuit bored instead it has standing pilot ignition and the burner always turns on as soon as I turn the dryer on and starts heating up right away. They simply don’t appliances that last anymore which is unfortunate and most appliances are junk once they reach 5 or 6 years old today
jgnapoles5 - LG has not recalled this dryer, and failed to offer any assistance to me when I called. I've even been contacted by a senior manager is service from LG after watching the video and they still haven't issued any notice (they were more concerned with the video being removed). I fixed this dryer myself by ordering the control board through sears (my cost, even when the manual stated a 3 year warranty!) and fixed it. I'll be watching this thing carefully in the future!!
Yes, keep it up, LG needs to make this right, then their rightiousness can also be displayed. We have airplanes crashing because of this kind of stuff, I Am In The Field. LG put you big boy pants on as Kobe says. This is a zero tolerance failure. (CBET)
Thank you very much for that information! I will look into the make of the gas valve. At this point it appears to be working properly with the new circuit board... but I don't want to take any chances with this heap!
They never heard of the problem when I called too! strange, even when I sent them links to all the complaints online, and spoke to senior management at LG when they viewed the video online, etc? How surprising (sarcasm!) An updated control board repaired the problem for me, about $100 part from sears and pretty easy to replace. the repair people I have had to my house in the past have done more damage then good - so I opted to research and repair on my own. Good luck with yours!
Very nice Video, I did notice one thing in your video on your gas valve itself. It appears to be a valve that was also "recalled". However it's only a recall if the government gets involved, Voluntary call backs are described as Service Bulletin Upgrades. ;-) The gas valve in the video appears to be a Starion valve. That valve has a tendency to stay on after the dryer turns off. FYI The replacement correct valve should be a Kanbishi valve. Something to check into.
Encountered this problem this weekend and LG Customer Support claims to have never heard of it. I told them it was my local gas company that alerted me to the LG controller issued when I had them come out to investigate a gas odor in my basement - and I offered to send links but they declined. Funny my gas utility would know about it but no LG. A bit concerning that they are playing dumb on the issue.
Wow SAME problem w/ our DLG5966G since purchased! SMELL gas only when it's running.had plumber come check it out w/ gas detector. said i was crazy even though never turned dryer on. I waited a few YEARS n decided to call our gas co.Did a thorough investigation n told me it must be defect in dryer bc he can only detect gas on detector after the burner ignites n he confirmed no gas leaks in our lines. LG says they've never heard of such a complaint n that we need a repair man to come fix it!
Nice job! I'm having a problem w/ a DLG2051W gas dryer. Faint oder of gas intermittently. That model was recalled but not my specific SN. "Repaired" by Sears 3 times so far, no joy...still get gas oder. It could be the same problem you're having but i'm not brave enought to try what you did. I'm gonna mention the control board when they return on 9/4. I Just reported it to the CPSC.
Same happens to except I was told by a tech its a bad secondary coil and the entire gas valve has to be replaced because you can’t replace individual coils on my model...
I've got a LG DLGX7188WM gas dryer with the same problem. The neighbors are complaining about the smell of raw gas. I just swapped out the control board (LG OEM Part #EBR36858804) on 11/30/2016. I'll report back in a month to see if things are better.
This is something that never happened on old fashioned , non electronic , gas dryers. There was a certain sequence of events that had to take place before the electrical current could pass from one component to the next. In this LG electronic dryer it's the control board that determines if certain parameters have been met and then the control board sends power to the gas valve solenoids to open the gas valves . The problem is that the control board can malfunction and send power to the solenoids without the required parameters being met ie: it thinks the igniter is on (when it really isn't) and then sends power to the solenoids. Or, since the control board interrogates each component before deciding what to do, it can make decisions based on faulty responses from components. Boeing has killed several hundred people now because they thought it a good idea to give a computer full decision making powers in their 737 max airplanes.
Main control boards can be poorly designed and programmed just like anything else. Your plane analogy is good, same neglect on LG and Bowing's part. Accountability is out the window, no pun intended. Fighting for those who pay (payed) with their lives. Unacceptable. .
I called LG. They replaced gas valve . DLG2526W. 2009 Model. This model was not part of the recall. One number off. It worked for about six months flawlessly! Gas smell came back outside and in clothes. Gas valve again or circuit board? Board is discontinued and there is no updated board that I can find. I will buy a new board this week and update my progress!
Wow! Definitely a very huge safety issue. It could explode, and destroy the whole house. Yeah. I preferred the electric dryers instead. But I prefer the Speed Queen TC5 series.
one correction though.. my model # is DLGX2502, purchased in early 2010.. but looks exactly the same, and is experiencing the same issue.. valve was actually replaced during the first incident and it has since burned out in only 3 months!
What is the solution to the problem where raw gas is being sent out the valve without the ignitor on? Is it the Main Control Board, or the gas valve, or some other problem?
There's a chain of commands. It looks like a bad flame sensor. My LG dryer would do something similar, but when I replaced the thermal switch it worked fine. Now it doesn't dry at all. I'm over fancy complicated appliances.
Warning: A gas dryer is a potential safety issue and can explode when there's a gas leak. When installing a gas dryer, you must carefully read the owners manual and how to install your gas dryer properly. Gas dryers require continuous parts as well as a gas pipe and gas line. You must carefully read the owners manual on how to properly install a gas pipe or gas line for your gas dryer. After the installation, run the dryer to see of the burner ignites. If the burner ignites, then the dryer is running properly. The gas valve should NOT be on without the igniter. This can cause a gas leak, causing it to blow up after 2 minutes. So, make sure that your gas dryer is running properly.
We have a LG DLGX2802L gas dryer which is doing the exact same thing. We bought this at the end of 2009. It has all the elements required to make a bom. All that is needed is an ignition source. I am very concerned that this is occurring.
Why was the gas solenoid being energized when it shouldn't. What was the defective component? Was or is this safety failure a recall, manufacture recall? How did you come to realize this? Did the owner notice gas smell outside.?
My mom's old Whirlpool did this as well if you opened and closed the door real quick during a heating cycle. After the flame sensor bi-metal switch cooled down some it would close the gas valves. This is just a wild thought, but I'm wondering if the LG control is turning on the heat before the bi-metal sensor has had time to cool down?
Yes, and if this is the case, should be safety recalled and delt with.. Regardless what is causing it, it needs to be pulled and Safety upgraded and the outside of the unit labeled so that it indicates the upgrade successfully done. I work on life support equipment and this is how we do safety upgrades. Sometimes equipment can be pulled with safety recalls such as this until the upgrade is implimented and operation, proper operation verified by a trained Technician.
the burner in my samsung dryer gives out a bigger flame, not like the one shown in your video, which is a fast torch-style flame like that on a rocket. as a result that flame in my dryer burns the hi-heat sensor, which did its job and turned off the flame every 5 seconds. I'm wondering what made my burner give out a much bigger flame. I'm ordering a new burner by the way
Mine was doing this too. I followed you lead by replacing the board.....no change. I have replaced ALMOST everything except the valve itself. and one of the thermostats. Are you having any further issues. what a pain in the ass. Using a craigslist electric special for the past yr.
This dryer works differently from most as its a dc valve operated from the board vs inline ac valve as part of the igniter shunt curcuit sadly if valve is being powered its a failed board issue not a valve problem
What is going on here is this. The secondary gas valve is stuck open after the first cycle. Then when the control board goes to cycle on the burner power is applied to the primary gas valve and the glow ignitor. when the ignitor gets hot enough it triggers the secondary valve to open. since it is stuck open, you get gas before the ignitor has a chance to warm up.
your first problem is it's a LG lol i'm a tech. and LG has cronic issuses with electrical, and yes im going to say it curcuit boards, but thats not the problem with this machine,it's the coils
This is obviously a bad control board thing all the more reason i kind of like the old analog dial and knobs me and my dad's rule of thumb the more electronic gizmos they throw on the appliance the more things that can break same goes with cars
Having a repair guy come out Friday for this. Very strong smell of gas during use of dryer. So our LG model DLG2051W is part of a LG recall, but our particular serial number is not part of the recall. Makes no sense. I might have screamed at the stupid idiot from the LG helpdesk. Last LG I buy.
Not made in USA Buy American next time .LG does not manufacture American-made appliances. Maytag, Whirlpool and Kenmore are a few of the manufacturers making their appliances in the United States. Now for something else The Who You Need To Know www.chick.com/reading/tracts/1087/1087_01.asp
He's a little confused, because some Kenmores are made by LG. LG has the best reliability rating based on Consumer Reports surveys from 2007-2015, with, I think, 7% of machines needing service in the first 4 years. Whirlpool and Kenmore are 11%, GE 12%, Maytag 13%, Samsung and Frigidaire 14%. That doesn't excuse the way they handle issues that occur, sounds like reliability is ahead of customer service at LG. I refuse to buy a Whirlpool because the "spider" on the back of their washer drums eventually corrode and break (so do other brands) but you CAN'T buy just the spider, they make you buy another stainless steel drum (which never wears out), even though the spider is just a bolted on part! Wow, that makes me angry, having to buy another "lifetime" stainless part when all I need is a new bolted on piece. LG does sell just the spider. You can also find the service manuals for LGs online if you look around (do a good search, including searing the number of the electric equivalent dryer.)
+David King I ordered an electric dryer and it turned out that my house was not wired for an electric dryer although I was told that it was by my builder. So I ordered a gas. But after this experience I will get my house wired for electricity and get an electric dryer. Not an LG
