@@tomgrant9370 Glad you mentioned this, as I was unsure if any other members of Just an Observation's audience would have sampled both shows. I say "Both" because despite the name and overall premise being identical, they could not be more different in their execution. Even right down to Ramsay's language, tone and pace during the narration. I don't think he was as popular in the USA when Series One of the UK show originally aired, so when he had finally establish himself over there he clearly did his research in order to provide for the needs of the average North American audience... Bigger production value, an attention grabbing soundtrack, a much greater sense of urgency which inherently affects his relationships with the restaurant owners and staff, and of course... Lots more foul language and outlandish behaviour. Can't fault the man for what he has achieved, really.
He still did pretty good job saving 3/10 restaurants in the end, I am pretty sure without his help 90% if not all of them would be closed down. Most of them at the moment of recording were already in pretty big debts. PS. Great vid
Exactly I've seen the 60% closure rate argument used many times and frankly I think its actually very impressive for a week or 2 of help. 75% of restaurants fail in the first year of business and like another 1/3 the second year.
@@mortemmalum7228 and those that fail it's mainly reverting to old ways with a few just too late in getting the help. and those that failed during the recession well that isn't really their fault.
It is produced television- so the producer are vetting the application videos sent by the owners and they choose what ever makes for great TV (most filth, weirdest personalities, etc.). The goal is to entertain the audience and saving a restaurant is maybe a byproduct at best
I love Kitchen Nightmares and the way it's edited and presented. I'm not sure how much is "heightened for TV" this show really is but I get the genuine sense of care from Gordon. I love the way he breaks the stubborn people on the show and often goes back and helps people out of their toxic mental cycles by digging into their pasts, even after all the crazy emotional verbal drama. I bet Gordon is sure proud of the remaining 40% though, this show perfectly nails the chaos of business
It should've been so simple for them. Just look for patterns in the failing restaurants before Gordon fixed them, make a list of common issues, then take stock of your own restaurant and make changes accordingly. Many of the reoccurring issues are: Frozen/premade food Microwaving dishes Chefs not having control over the menu Lazy/arrogant/inexperienced chefs Filthy restaurant/kitchen/freezer Rotten/expired food Overpriced food Poor treatment of staff/customers Bizarre/ugly decor Ignoring staff/customer advice Unusual dishes Oddly enough, the cleanest and most beautiful restaurant ended up being the only one he walked out on, since the owners were just plain batshit insane.
I think there’s also something to be said about how Gordon is always posed as being correct and anyone who disagrees with him is framed as being wrong. The editors certainly include a lot of clips of people praising Gordon as a genius and a god, and obviously he’s a world class chef who has demonstrably opened and maintained a lot of successful restaurants, but when I watch the show I definitely notice how because he is consistently the protagonist from episode to episode, the editors feel the need to create an antagonist or antagonists instead of portraying it as a fully collaborative project where Gordon and the owners have a common goal. Often, the owners/head chef/what have you are indeed being arbitrary and belligerent, but I doubt it’s the case at every restaurant. I may be thinking too deeply about it as well, but it seems to me that this kind of no-nonsense badass who is always right character extends far beyond Kitchen Nightmares and House in the popular consciousness, to the extent that characters who do heinous things such as Tony Soprano and Walter White are viewed through this lens even when the premise of their show is that they shouldn’t be.

During the initial COVID lockdown I binged all of Hell's Kitchen, Hotel Hell, and the first 5 seasons of Kitchen Nightmares. Yep this is how each episode goes. The only thing I'll say is I do hate how misleading the failure % of restaurants is. If you look up the history of most of those places or just how long they lasted after the show its generally several months at most. When you film a show and close down that soon after filming a new menu and design of the restaurant most likely won't save it even if you get a ton of new business you'd straight up need a massive cash infusion like a large loan and after watching 5 season I feel like no bank would consider another loan at that point for any of the restaurants.
