Excellent video essay. I love how the Coen brothers take old movie genres, like the Screwball comedy and film Noir and reinvent them in a very contemporary way without seeming overly pastiche or a pretentious, contrived throwback. More pertinent to this discussion, by placing unserious people in serious situations they up the stakes to the Nth degree giving the comedy very dark undertones. The characters can be described as people, usually categorized as an amalgam of character tropes, who attempt to venture out of their comfort zone, only to bite of more then they can chew leading to drama. The Fargo series encapsulates this perfectly too.
This makes me realize: their world is dark, but not nihilistic as some suggest. There’s always bigger things at work in the world, but your choices still matter; so never take your opportunities for granted.
1. The main characters are taken from one genre and thrown into another 2. Almost Every character doesn’t see the big picture because their goals blind them (like money or power)- forgetting consequences or the people around them 3. Taking the unserious and making them serious (due to the incompetence or ignorance of other characters) 4. The “good” people don’t realize what they’re doing is bad, influenced by their social circles (sometimes dumb, sometimes proud, sometimes nonexistence) 5. The characters’ beliefs are juxtaposed with a hit by reality 6. The worlds all collide in the end So good
I haven’t watched this yet but I just want to say you are doing a fantastic job with all your videos. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before you take off, the videos all look very professional and are really entertaining. I hope you keep this up because you seem to be fantastic at it.
Did the exact same thing when I happened upon his channel. Had some major nostalgia hits thanks to his content, but it has also awoken a new respect for the subject/media he breaks down, and inspired me to learn more about what goes into the creation of the things I actually enjoy, and previously invested my time in, instead of just mindlessly sweeping through bland, unoriginal content which I normally only click on to act as background noise while I do something else. Best of luck throwing yourself down the rabbit hole buddy! You're gonna love it 👍
It took me a bit the first time watching his character's death to stop laughing. Brad Pitt's face just cracked me up so hard... omg, fond memory of that movie. 🤣
I always "think" the same thing when i watch one of their movies but never managed to put it in words, thank you! And your channel is amazing keep it up!
Love your videos. The ideas unfold in an undeniably engaging way, combined with a soothing but matter-of-fact voice and quick but not adhd editing.... subbed, keep it up and you'll have a large audience soon enough 👌
Even in there serious movies they do this. In no country for old men almost everyone outside moss, Anton, Carson and the sheriff is depicted as completely out of there element and used for dark comedy and tragedy. Both moss and Anton run into people while injured, a group of young adults and a couple of kids respectively, and both times they make a sharp contrast to the main hero but also only start interacting with there world when offered money and both act greedy.
Waitwhat? How can it be that I've never seen another Cohen Brothers movie except for Lebowski?!? I love that one, know the others have great reviews too but simply never got to them. Your video here just reminded me of this blunder once again! :D
Very good video. The "Joe Average in a James Bond scenario" shtick is nothing new, but the Coen brothers really know how to drive that one out of the ballpark.
I'm working on a kid friendly remake of the big lebowski where the Dude is a pug and the wheelchair Lebowski is a bulldog and Brandt is a golden retriever and Walter is a dachsund and Donny is a cat and the Dude's landlord is a greyhound and Bunny is a poodle and the Jesus is an Afghan hound and the cop in Malibu is a chihuahua and all the other characters are other breeds of dog but it's not fully kid friendly because we finna use the audio from the original movie
@@residentelect the movie now opens with a pug getting jumped by a small nihilist crew consisting of a bull terrier, an akita, and a boxer dog. "Oh come on, not on my fucking rug" he tells them. When they shove his head in the water of his own toilet, he acts very nonchalant about it joking around like "I'm sure your money's in there somewhere let me take another look." What this tells us about the main character is that because he's a pug he can't reach the toilet water and he's happy for some help drinking from the toilet
@@residentelect I don't know if we can get voice acting and sound editing high quality enough to do this but ideally the big man when they meet he's like "the pugs lost, Mr. Lebowski! The pugs will always lose!"
@@residentelect the pug's best friend is a dachsund who did not see friends die face down in the muck in Vietnam just for you to kick him out of your little diner. He's a feisty little guy
Hey just wanted to say I found your videos today and immediately subscribed! I hope your channel to gains more traction because I think you deserve it and your content is awesome!
Hey man, What happened to your eyes wide shut video? It was so well made. I was here to watch it again. Please share alternate link 🙏 Edit: Can someone help me out? Any help is really appreciated.
Especially fine when you figure that Lebowski was based on the noir detective novel “Big Sleep” in which the main character looking for the rich fella’s loved one is, in fact, a hard-boiled veteran PI of the genre. So to “cast” an unemployed loser in the same story is a great twist!
Great Video! You got determinism kinda wrong tho. I think Determinism actually means to think there is no free will at all. Having your decisions influenced by your Surroundings is either compatibalism, when its about free will, or materialism, when its about society and its economic Basis. Still glad I found your channel tho, keep it Up my Dude.
I know, the definition I read was a dictionary definition. But my point was that due to the characters and their social circle being who they are, they would all influence one another in predictable ways so that you essentially have no free will (as those surrounding influencers also have no free will in how they interpret and react to events). So the outcome is pre-destined. You have the illusion of free will, but based on who you are and your experiences, you are geared to react a specific way. That was my intention, I perhaps failed if it came across as just being influenced.
Never been a Coen bros. fan. They arent bad movies, but they are just dull with some clever quotables. I had a boss that would have 'movie nights' which really was just him playing Coen bros. movies, so Ive trudged my way through them a couple times. Interesting perspectives though. Ill keep it in mind if I ever rewatch them. It might put an interesting spin on them.
what your describing when you say determinism is actually compatibilism, in determinism it isn't just the influence of surrounding circumstances its fully determinative, so there are no choices, its fully cause and effect.
I’m a simple man. I see the dude in the thumbnail, I click.
The dude abides...man!
I'm glad you included Burn After Reading, obviously Lebowski and Fargo are classics but it's hilarious too.
Yeah, it’s seriously under appreciated

No love for “The man who wasn’t there” again? A sadly overlooked movie.
I mean, there's no love for a majority of their films here. Only three movies are focused on here.

Then there’s every single Disney production regarding Star Wars and Marvel who just shoehorn cringe halfassed comedic dialogue into everything
