    When I saw Blood Simple for the first time their distaste for greed and currency was very straight forward. How it turned a harmless happy go-lucky detective into a disgusting blood thirsty killer showed how greed can twist someone into something they weren't naturally. Great video.

      I think Tom does need money in Miller's Crossing, though it's not his primary motivation... he's on a bad gambling streak and sets up Casper to have the money when he does and takes it off his dead body, and it works out great for Tom...
      Also, I think Jerry Lundergaurd does owe money... he has the loan Banker trying to reach him bc of the unreadable serial #s on cars he'd received loans for...

    in Raising Arizona Gale and Evel aren't trying to sell Nathan JR on the black market at all, they originally take him for the reward money but end up loving him and wanting to raise him. Leonard Smalls wants to sell them on the back market. I think that's pretty a pretty important distinction man, that's why Leonard Smalls is the antagonist and Gale and Evel are still lovable fools in the end.

    this was a great video, really well put together and made me think even more about my fav directors. it feels like every movie they make is a reflection of their own lives and thoughts and ideology, varying in depth and reality and theme from movie to movie. i think the best people at their craft make things about their daily lives, but are so good at it and see the mundaneness and suffering of life in a such unique perspective

    I love anything that really improves my appreciation of great movies. This did just that. So - I thank-you. Very, very much.
    Sometimes I find it hard to believe that this kind of thing is free and made (and made so well) by insightful, usually anoymous, brilliant enthusiasts and posted on a democratic video platform without any notion of whether or not it will attract attention. I grew up in a world where you had to pay for this kind of first rate criticism, probably at a decent school. I work in Higher Education and can tell you right now, we need to up our game or we are going to become regarded as no more than con artists selling snake oil education to the young for, you guessed it, a little bit of money.
    I sometimes wonder if we aren't already there.

    I've always viewed Tom's motivations in "Miller's Crossing" as a power play. He's the one with a "wart on his fanny," and wanted to sit behind Leo's desk. That isn't revealed until that final shot as Tom watches Leo walk away.
    Or maybe I just misinterpreted that moment.

    Worth mentioning but probably point-parting, in _Burn After Reading_ , Linda ultimately does get her plastic surgery as an almost afterthought by J.K. Simmons' CIA Superior.

    • @footofjuniper8212
      @footofjuniper8212 6 лет назад

      Good point. Never really thought about it that way, but her surgery is the "golden fleece" that is basically the set-up for the whole plot. It's off-screen, but JK approves it with a wave of his hand.

    Hmmm...The themes identified in No Country For Old Men are almost exactly the same as the book though. So did the Coen Brothers choose it because it fit their thematic paradigm or is it a coincidence?

    • @krautgazer

      Why would it be a coincidence? If a filmmaker who has total creative control over their films chooses a book to adapt, of course they're gonna choose something that fits their worldview.

    NOTE: Raising Arizona's ending really drawls paraells from the Biblical story of Abraham and Sara. The Cohen's (being Jewish) use Old Testament examples in several of their movies.
    As far as the Abram and Sara story go, they could not have children and God tells them they will have offspring as numerous as the stars.
    HI says in the last line: If not Arizona, maybe it was Utah. Meaning to me, if not a perfect ending, then something that borders a perfect ending. Utah borders Arizona.

    • @joylesstiger
      @joylesstiger 6 лет назад

      That's an interesting take, I always interpreted the last line as HI's continual misguided approach to problem solving. The dream sequence is full of wholesome, lofty ambitions and where the answer should be dedication, hard work and determination, he naively thinks it's a problem of locality. Just like robbery is the answer to monetary issues or kidnapping is the answer to a barren wife. He gets so close to relevatory insight and then pisses it away with a lazy conclusion.
