    It just occurred to me that one of the reasons I enjoy this channel is that aside from the educational and entertainment value is that even though I will never be able to afford to explore the vast world of this hobby you bring your knowledge and affability to (I'm assuming) many of us who just like to dream. Growing up in NY in the 70s this was a snobbish environment that had no patience for plebeians like me. In my retirement years, your channel feels like home.

    Based on the F100 review on this channel, I felt the B100 bookshelves and C100 center were worth my time to audition as upgrades to my Polk LSiM 703 and 704c LCR setup (already have subs for each of the LCR), particularly as I always felt the Polks were lacking in detail and imaging compared to my Focal Elex headphone setup. After auditioning them yesterday, I ordered on the spot. Clear step-up from my existing Polks in detail and the imaging elicited an audible "wow" from me. Staging also felt more open, and goodness did electric guitars sound good (highly recommend listening to Tool's "The Pot" on this line). I was NOT expecting them to be as good as they were. While not cheap, for what they are they feel like a bargain (I was expecting to have to shell out a lot more for this clear of a performance jump). Went with the gloss black finish (pictures do not do it justice...went in thinking I would like walnut the most, but the gloss black was super impressive in person). Big thanks to Andrew and Kristi for putting this series on my radar!!!

      @charlesking4843 Well worth an audition, especially if you find yourself wanting in the same areas I did with the Polks (and desire/are fine with a more forward presentation). Excited to see how the Martin Logans do in my space once they arrive, particularly at lower volumes (have found I need to turn up the volume on the Polks for them to come alive, which is not the best in an apartment...)

      Nice pick on the B100 Bookies.
      I had the Polk LSi15 LR and LSiC for a good 17 years. ...when it came time to upgrade my system, I ended up scrapping Polk, and went with Revel. Yes, I chose bookshelf M16 + REL HT1003 over my Polk LSi series.
      Polk can be a gateway drug into hi-fi, but there are SO many other speakers makers out there that deserve people's attention.

      @@rwaring58 how are the XL B100's for low and medium volume listening in your apartment? I also am in an apartment and looking at these real hard

    • @rwaring58
      @rwaring58 Год назад +1

      @lawpenner Definitely better than the Polks were (at all volumes). Admittedly the LSiM 703s were easier to dial in to the subs (B100 still an excellent speaker without, but a sub really helps fill it out). Those 703s are BIG and have more authority on the low frequencies (and are pretty flat before roll off), although the MLs have the clear edge in bass speed and texture. Midrange up the MLs just win. Details are easier to make out and the soundstage and imaging are out of this world. Dialogue from the C100 center channel also noticeable inprovement over the LSiM 704c. I have zero hesitation recommending these.

    Thank you! Thank you! For answering my question and helping my decision!
    I have the Motion 35XTi bookshelf’s and was about to buy a Rel T7X to round off what I thought was lacking on the lower mids and bass. Now I am going for the F100’s and selling my 35xti. The fact that the port is under the speaker and the fact that I don’t need a sub makes this my endgame speaker. I love my 35xti’s but always thought It could just better. The Sub I had just didn’t match well, the sounded better ok their own. So to fork out $4,500.00 and enjoy.

    Love your reviews! I would love them even more if you added a tiny detail: how wide is the speakers’ (these and all the others you review going forward) “sweet spot?” In “real world” conditions this is one of the most critical details because frankly, music and movies are better enjoyed with a friend or family member or 3 at your side. Can we all enjoy pin point imaging and a wide soundstage, or will that be a luxury for a single person with their “head in a vice?” Nobody mentions this in their reviews, and since you two are a pair you are in a prime position to test this information. Please try to mention it in the future!

    Really enjoyed the review and thanks Kristi for bringing up the speaker comparisons. I've had the ML XT B100's for almost a week now and they sound great with the Crown XLS 2502 amp, Denon AVR-X3600H receiver and a PSA 15" sealed subwoofer. I don't really believe in speaker break-in, but they did sound somewhat disappointing at first listen where drums had no impact and the overall sound to me was subdued. After around 12 hours - 15 hours, the sound appears to have settled in??? as I'm really enjoying them now. Note that the manual states 72 hours of break-in at 90dB before any critical listening. They are replacing a pair of B&W 705 S2's which will go in another room. Thanks again for the review.

    • @bearclaw5115

      Some speakers absolutely have break-in. I have had multiple pairs of the same speakers and observed a change in sound from new to broken-in. The typical trend is that they sound 'tight' at first. They develop more bass over time and typically smoother highs. Soundstage depth increases as well. Not all speakers break-in though.
      This is coming from a guy who has had more than 40 speakers in my house this year. Not as many as Andrew and Krisi, but I'm working on it!

    • @lawpenner
      @lawpenner Год назад

      We've all heard debate whether break-in is real or not but I routinely see shipped with high-end audio products that are designed and manufactured by the industry's best, break-in in the official owner instructions.
      I've listened to Paul at PS Audio explain the different mechanical parts, drivers, even capacitors... how they break in
      Looks like you just experienced breakin for yourself. Thanks for sharing this real world experience

      Good to hear someone else found breaking in to be beneficial. I found the same thing with the older Motion 15i’s and 60xti’s. I told my youngest (and he agreed) “Is it me, or do these speakers sound better?”. They seemed a little harsh at first, but after several hours of listening, they do sound better. I will be getting in the Polk R700’s within a couple days and can’t wait to compare!

      I have a mix of the prior 2 generations of Martin Logan Motion bookshelfs. The Motion 15s, Motion 30 center, Motion LX16s top heights, Motion 2i as surrounds.
      Absolutely love how the Motions are so lively and bright without being fatiguing. I find that I can enjoy music at much lower audio levels than before when I had ELAC front stage. Don’t need to push the motions too hard for them to sound great and give long pleasant listening session. Mine are pairs with an SVS 1000 (non ported).
      With amplification they sound even better but I enjoyed them for 2 years with no amp just fine. I now have an Outlaw 5000x driving my entire front stage.

    I currently own the ML Motion 40 speakers (original version) and absolutely love them. They can get a tad harsh if I am not careful but the detail is amazing. Shopping for new speakers, I cannot find anything that is comparable until I get to the $10k range, detail wise.Lots of speakers that are close but if you factor in the fact I would have to buy the new speakers, they are just not worth the money for a slight or no upgrade in sound.
    I think I just really like the ribbon tweeter over a dome.

    Thank you for your excellent work. Regarding speech intelligibility in movies: Kristi's comment that the F100 was superior in this regard to the B100 was surprising. My wife and I both ask the dreaded "what did she say?" question, and a major incentive to upgrade is to improve intelligibility. For movies, I assume that the same XTC100 center was used. Since almost all movie dialogue is directed to the center channel, it is hard to understand why different L and R speakers would make a meaningful difference. A few possibilities present themselves:
    1) Was the center speaker moved or changed in any way?
    2) Did you try plugging the B100 ports to improve intelligibility?
    3) Was the sub or subs specifically integrated to the B100?
    4) Did you experiment with the crossover settings to improve intelligibility?
    In our small/medium room, 13x17x8, I suspect the B100 with our two excellent subs would be as good or perhaps better than the F100 and for a third the price. I know that you have addressed the floorstander/bookshelf issue before, and are very familiar with this issue. You may want to expand on this with regard to the B100. Thanks again to you both for your informative and entertaining videos.

And it was pleased to hear it in a room with 4.5 meter height and 22-24 square meter... and it was still there.... the sound and the presence. I would buy it over Chora for their ORIGINAL price. My question is do you think my Marantz will have enough juice to properly drive either the MLs or the KEFs? I would really appreciate your thoughts. I love your channel and value your opinions. Subwoofer(s) can be placed where bass boost, frequency response, boundary issues and room nodes across a wide range of bass tones can be optimized. Tower speakers have to be where stereo is best served (for the best imaging, center effect, mid-blend, etc) - which is the approximate same for bookshelf and wide range satellite speakers… and that can be good for bass (or not) and can get some nodes (room modes) to blend but not all; unless the gods smile on you above all others.
      My fave so far is a pair of towers, and a pair of subwoofers at the other end of the room - this equates to a satellite/sub system with 4 subs in Harmon 4-sub optimized locations… 1/4, 1/4, 1/4, 1/4 (more or less from the four corners)

      ESS was selling a Limited Edition of their AMT 1 (a, b, c?) with the full size Heil Driver and a 12" woofer/passive radiator combo for $4500 USD. They are all sold out now.
      If your system goes down to 30 HZ. you don't need a subwoofer for music. Many sub woofers don't go down that low. If you use them in a home theater set up then you will need to add a sub for, explosions and sound effects.
      Full Disclosure: I own a pair of ESS RMII speakers. I love them for their clarity imaging and slam, they go down to 35hz.
