Wow! This is amazing. Hat's off to you. I actually play with Al Jardine's Endless Summer band. I'll have to send this to him. I also know several of the guys in Brian's band. Hopefully, this will get to Brian eventually if it hasn't already.
Woah, this is insane! Do you know if Brian ended up finding out about this, or anyone else involved in the original sessions such as Al? If so, do you know what they thought? I know it’s been 7 years… but I’m super curious!
I think this is the closest anyone has come to achieving what, I imagine, Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks envisioned SMiLE to sound like in the mid to late 60’s. Your cover is extremely well researched and well theorized, and just a treat to listen to. I think I like it even more than the official archived release from 2011. H&V feels truer to Wilson’s original sort of Musique Concrete approach, which really brings it to life in a whole new way and makes me appreciate what he was trying to do even more. All of this, on top of the pure virtuosity you ooze throughout all of this song, makes it the ultimate fan cover. Thank you for this, and I hope some day you come back and release your covers of the 2nd and 3rd Suite. Stay well.
Bruce Johnston presents SMiLE! Jokes aside this is an amazing accomplishment dude. This might be the best cover (if you can even call it that) I’ve heard in my entire life.
And here we are, over 4 years since it had been 8 years, and still waiting. This is almost taking just as long as the original SMiLE sessions did to finally see the light of day haha! I know, I know… you can’t rush genius.
I'm speechless. This is the biggest demonstration of love i've ever seen/heard. Spending about 3 years to recreate only 20 minutes of music, taking such a hard work, achieving such level of perfectionism... You're truly a fan
Thanks so much, Jeff! It's an honor to know that great musicians like you are enjoying this project, and it'd be a dream come true to know that Al or Brian got to hear it. I also recently posted Vegatables from my in-progress Suite Three recreation--Al may get a kick out of that one! Thanks again!
Proof positive that the SMiLE music will be taken for the 20th century classical music that it is, to be studied and reinterpreted for decades to come. Congratulations on your finely tuned ear and hard work executing this as well as you do.
This in itself is something of a work of a genius. It is astonishing that you could so accurately read virtually the entirety of he original out of recorded materials, then recreate it in your own unique voice to such remarkable faithfulness to the spirit and letter of the Authentic. I absolutely love this fine achievement of yours. And I don't mind admitting, I'm insanely jealous of your remarkable talent.
Others have attempted Our Prayer.....and the harmonies are so complex that most get a note or two wrong. This Version was the best I have ever heard. Perfect.
Been listening to this repeatedly for several years: I have a Beach-Boys playlist full of their best songs and every time I come across the SMiLE Session versions I always end up wishing that I could just replace that set with yours - the transitions you ended up making are phenomenal! Really do hope that you're doing well, even without the other two suites this was more than enough to give to the Beach Boys community for free! Thank you.
The vocals sound kind of like Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and Brian Wilson himself. This is astounding and amazing. Fantastic vocals and instrumental performance. You know your music theory and have a great ear for detail.
Wow... hats off to you, man. Like, every hat. I don't wear hats so I'm going to command everybody who DOES wear them to take them off. Not only did you perfectly recreate this perfect album, which is no small feat at all, and not only is your voice pitch-perfect and amazing, and ALSO not only did you play every single instrument yourself, including some you'd never played before, but you added so much of your own genius into this, and somehow made it come out sounding even more amazing than the original! Brian would be so proud and I hope somehow he finds this and revels in it. This is everything that anyone could ever dream of accomplishing musically.
Wow, this is really, _really_ good. Great job! This is pretty much how I always imagined this suite would sound, had it come to full fruition without any interference from the record label, and from certain jealous band members. I’d say that your three years of laboring on this definitely paid off. I’ll be saving this one to my favorites, for many return listening sessions. Cheers!
This is crazy. You are clearly obsessed (I mean that in a positive way) with SMiLE, like many of us. Congratulations on an insanely great achievement. Brian and the Boys should take you on tour as "accuracy consultant" for their 2012 50th Anniversary reunion. Hats off. Way off.
This is among the best things I've ever listened to. Utterly astonishing to see one person do all this. You sing brilliantly (Carl would be proud!), you recreate the instrumental sounds so incredibly well, and on top of it all you seem to have figured out all these complex structures. I'm not even able to figure out the "simple" top chords. No pressure here, but I've been checking your channel pretty much every week since you uploaded Suite One to see when there's gonna be more. Way to go dude!
This is an absolutely incredible achievement to cover, especially as *perfectly* as you did on the recording AND production! Brian would be proud, amazing job!
This is incredible, you managed to recreate perfectly all the original parts and make great connections between songs, changing the "official" running order but adding a new flavor I never heard before. As a massive Beach Boys and BW fan I can only say thank you! (I would love to see the entire album covered but I know it's extremely hard)
Thanks! The transitions were definitely the hardest part about completing this thing. I was going to do the BWPS sequence of H&V at first, but then decided to include some of the H&V chants throughout.. and tacking the "piano rehearsal" acapella to the end of one of the chants (like Brian was clearly planning) gave me a great way to slide from the "Cantina Version" parts into the "sunny down snuff" section. i'm glad you enjoyed it!
Very, very, COOL!! Nice work, I have always loved Brian Wilson, his music, and the Beach Boys. Timeless music, Smile, Pet Sounds, and Beach Boys Today are my favorites!! Great job on this Smile mix, well done!!
This came as a surprise to me. I have been collecting Smile tracks and edits for years and suddenly here is this. Why did I not know? Basically I can stop my search now because Here It Is. I am a professional audio guy, and this is an achievement. My favorite touch is the choice of the slightly muffled little ride cymbal. Sweet.
Utterly astonishing! I just can't imagine anyone pulling this off. At 5:45-- pure magic! I actually think this rivals the master himself in conceptualizing (and actualizing!) the plausible arrangement of the musical elements as he created them in their various constructions. I'm giving you six out of five stars!! haha
Incredible. This recordings are Won Won Wonderful. I hope you have your own band/solo project, so you can release this with your name/your band's name on it, you must be proud of this great work!
@danimusik haha nope, i'm just a self-taught musician (on everything except the drums, which ironicaly I hardly played on these recordings) and a 100% amateur producer. my "studio" is just a spare bedroom with a mic and some cords. thanks for the flattering question though!
I seriously can't believe what I'm hearing here. I followed your videos since you posted your first "Surf's Up" version and was looking forward to the time you'd finish this ever since. Hats off, I can't even imagine how much work this must have been. You are incredibly talented and have done the Boys, Brian, and SMiLE itself more justice than anyone could ever do.
WOW! This is so awesome. I was going to try to do something along these lines but after hearing this I don't know why I'd even try. I love the parts you threw around in Heroes and Villains. Best version I've heard. Definitely better than either version of smile.
Easily the best version recorded and mixed by anyone. You can play the rest of the real deal after this with no contrast. I hope you get around to recording the rest at some point.
Thanks! The segue into Do You Like Worms seemed like a natural fit since the chords matched up--then it hit me, of course "Bridge to Indians" is a bridge to the song about Indians. I don't know why they wrote a new section in 2004 instead of just going with a piece they already had.
Amazing work. So true to the original and you did a flawless job representing what we can only imagine Brian would have created giving he kept with the project before drifting away.
Increíble trabajo; Smile , obra nunca suficientemente ponderada.
There's something missing on the Smile CD.It's not sequenced properly and there's no indication of how the music should flow. You have recreated it perfectly.I'm thinking those who worked on it lost the overall concept. You've realised it properly.Thankyou.And Thank you Brian and Van Dyke.Wonderful.
wow!!! well done!! 3 years on and off?? nice!! it's sooo worth it no matter how much time you spend, eh?! I myself wanted to learn suite 2 on the piano all the way through and man was it worth it in the end! ingenius music. but wow you did a great job here!!!
Thank you so much! I'm always humbled to get such kind comments on what's really just a pet project of mine. I've really had next to no time to work on Suite Two since I uploaded this one, but I'm absolutely going to finish it someday (I'm trying to be true to the original, but not THAT true to it!).
FABULOUS stuff. Have you ever heard the version of smile done only with acoustic guitar and vocals? I can't remember the band at the moment. Someone Scandinavian maybe.
Wow! This is amazing. Hat's off to you. I actually play with Al Jardine's Endless Summer band. I'll have to send this to him. I also know several of the guys in Brian's band. Hopefully, this will get to Brian eventually if it hasn't already.
What happened?
Woah, this is insane! Do you know if Brian ended up finding out about this, or anyone else involved in the original sessions such as Al? If so, do you know what they thought? I know it’s been 7 years… but I’m super curious!
would love to hear a follow up on this, Jeff
I'm also anxiously awaiting a follow up
Can't WAIT
That is very, very good. You got the essence in the cabin.

Jokes aside this is an amazing accomplishment dude. This might be the best cover (if you can even call it that) I’ve heard in my entire life.
Eight years later, I'm still periodically checking back on this video, hoping this project will one day be completed. I hope you're well, adwolf16!
And here we are, over 4 years since it had been 8 years, and still waiting. This is almost taking just as long as the original SMiLE sessions did to finally see the light of day haha!

You're truly a fan
Brilliant it will take us fans back to 1967 I'm a newbie to the groovy sound of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson
Jesus Christ. Someone gets this man a recording contract quick!! I want to hear this all over the radio.

Exellent, what absolute perfection,an incredible job of what has to be the most magnificent piece of popular music ever written,Heroes and villains.
Others have attempted Our Prayer.....and the harmonies are so complex that most get a note or two wrong. This Version was the best I have ever heard. Perfect.

This is truly a teenage symphony to God. Beautiful work, man; I love it!
I think youve made the best iteration of "Heroes and Villains" ive ever heard
The vocals sound kind of like Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and Brian Wilson himself. This is astounding and amazing. Fantastic vocals and instrumental performance. You know your music theory and have a great ear for detail.
This video has aged perfectly over the past decade. It sounds very similar to the AI recordings we're hearing today.
holy shit this is so cool
takes serious dedication to recreate any music, but Smile.......... pretty challenging. congratulations.
Dude, where is Suite Two. Please lol
This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen in my entire life
This is amazing. The transition to Do You Like Worms is perfect, can't believe Brian overlooked it in 2004. Amazing work!

MrHoweYOUdoin I do not know you MrHoweYOUDoin but I can tell you are the fucking man.
Only just seeing this now after nearly 10 years...truly incredible work, massive respect to you
As far as music covers go, this one wins RUclips. I think Brian Wilson would be impressed by this, it's that good.
Wow, this is really, _really_ good. Great job! This is pretty much how I always imagined this suite would sound, had it come to full fruition without any interference from the record label, and from certain jealous band members. I’d say that your three years of laboring on this definitely paid off.

This is stunning, definitely one of the best cover versions I've seen

I can't stop listening to this XD I love that transition from Heroes and Villains to Roll Plymouth Rock! Brilliant!
sir, you have you recorded what i now consider the DEFINITIVE PSYCHEDELIC version of Heroes and Villains. thank you for this treasure.

I can't add anything to what has already been written. Truly amazing!!!!!!
That has to be the official and definitive edit!! Thanks and congratulations!!
I always felt that the "Brian Wilson presents" and the "Smile Sessions" were wrong. This is right!!
Utterly astonishing! I just can't imagine anyone pulling this off. At 5:45-- pure magic!
I actually think this rivals the master himself in conceptualizing (and actualizing!) the plausible arrangement of the musical elements as he created them in their various constructions.
I'm giving you six out of five stars!! haha
love it, can't add anything to what's already been said really, but the "you're under arrest!!" was hilarious
Incredible. This recordings are Won Won Wonderful. I hope you have your own band/solo project, so you can release this with your name/your band's name on it, you must be proud of this great work!

Your work has given me untold pleasure over the years since you posted it. Thank you. Any hope that one day we might see Suites 2 and 3?
I still get chills every time I repeat listen to this.
Amazing! And you've got a great voice, sounds like Bruce... 😊
That's amazing. Great work and great knowledge of the album. Ciao from Italy!!
This is so very good. A brilliant recreation.Harmonies are so clear and new inner voices audible. Bravo!!
That was frikkin' amazing! I really enjoyed that!
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
This is just insane. Fantastic job.
OMFG amazing. I can't wait until you come out with the second suite! I'll be on top of that like flies to....you know what!
LOVE that you did the alternative Heroes and Villains!!! Amazing job!
great job, this should have way more views! You have my vote to extend it more!
You must be proud of it!! Best work I've ever heard on Brian's music. Brian is the MAN!

Really, really nice job. I'd say Brian would certainly be proud.
WOW! This is so awesome. I was going to try to do something along these lines but after hearing this I don't know why I'd even try. I love the parts you threw around in Heroes and Villains. Best version I've heard. Definitely better than either version of smile.

Best band of all time
How could you possibly have done this???? It's too perfect.
@adwolf16 Hopefully you're working on the SUITE TWO and THREE!!! Please, tell me you are! Greetings Paul
you sound like AL!:)
This is truly excellent
Amazing work. So true to the original and you did a flawless job representing what we can only imagine Brian would have created giving he kept with the project before drifting away.

I'm speechless.
Really great!!
Brian Wilson is a genius
I really like this version , it's more comfy
wow!!! well done!! 3 years on and off?? nice!! it's sooo worth it no matter how much time you spend, eh?! I myself wanted to learn suite 2 on the piano all the way through and man was it worth it in the end! ingenius music. but wow you did a great job here!!!

This is close to the indescribable. You did a superb job. Favorited forever.
Excelente trabajo. Felicitaciones!
Wow. All I can say is...Wow. Very well done.
Mind blowing! More then a children's song!
Absolutely amazing work. What commitment, creativity and total professionalism. You should feel incredibly very proud of this!
Excellent my friend!
Wonderful!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much! H&V was a lot of fun to piece together--every once in a while I still think of things I'd do differently today.
This is really impressive. Three years on just the first suite. That shows a hell of a lot of commitment.
FABULOUS stuff. Have you ever heard the version of smile done only with acoustic guitar and vocals? I can't remember the band at the moment. Someone Scandinavian maybe.
Sir this is just amazing ive always wanted to do something like this and you just inspired me
love what you did with heroes and villains, i don't know why brian didn't do something like this for the song
This is really wonderful ! Thanks a lot !
Oh My God, you're too good!!!! :D
Best wishes from Italy!
Awesome job man
This is mindblowing! I love the transition to I'm in Great Shape
When I saw this image years ago, I thought he was holding a picture frame, not a mirror what a way creative way to take a picture.
They were, without question, the absolute easiest thing to do in this entire production :)
I'm about to kick back and listen to this whole thing-
Amazing! The transitions work better than on both "official" versions here IMHO, plus this has a nice "vintage" sound - give us more ;)
perfect
