  • February and March can be an exciting time to go after Largemouth on Guntersville Lake. A lipless style crankbait is one of the most effective ways to have success in the prespawn period. I will show and give you a few tips that work for me at this time of year.

    You do this every year and by the time I can get up there from Birmingham and fish a red rattletrap on the rip-rap, they’ve gone elsewhere.
    Still fun to do it knowing how well you did.
    One day, I’ll get up there at the right time.
    Sigh.

      It happened a little earlier this year. There was a warm up and some warm rains that got the water temps up. There have already been a couple of small waves of spawners up. Last week there was already 63 to 65 degree water in some creeks. I'm kind of glad to see this cold weather to slow things down a little. The fishing is still wide open though. 👍

      Gordon, I’m 76 and have chosen to not solo fish.
      It’s difficult to get out in colder weather.
      I fish vicariously.

      @@charlesnoyes3051 I completely understand. This cold weather this weekend kept me in the house. I'm not as die hard as I used to be even just a few years ago.

      Man it's on fire right now. There has already been a couple waves of spawners. Lots of fish shallow. By then I would concentrate on spawning bays and pockets. Plastics like a senko and small worms should be very good good up shallow. Good luck on your trip.

    Hey man I’m down here for the week for my first trip ever… any tips on what I should be doing?

    • @GordonPettieFishing
      @GordonPettieFishing  Год назад

      There are lots of fish shallow right now. 10 foot or less. This cold snap hasn't seemed to hurt them. Took just shy of 30 pounds to win a tourny yesterday and lots of 20+ lb bags. Rattle trap and chatterbait and squarebills are still good choices to cover water. There has already been a wave or 2 of spawners up on the bank. Still fish staging to come up. Grass edges coming into the spawning bays and pockets will be good areas to concentrate on.

    Hey Gordon what’s that lews reel your using

    • @GordonPettieFishing
      @GordonPettieFishing  Год назад

      It's an older Speed Spool the SSG1H in 6.5 :1 gear ratio. I like the lower end gear ratios for early season r trap. It keeps me from reeling too fast and I can keep the bait ticking the top of the grass. 🎣

    • @garrettparker7885
      @garrettparker7885 Год назад +1

      @@GordonPettieFishing yea I was asking cause the spool looked bigger like my lews super duty , it’s a 6:5.1 too but the spools so big it actually has the line pick up that most 7 gear ratios have
