    Nice video man.
Definitely on point about region, winter in my AO (far north midwest) and the deep south are starkly different, definitely the same for static vs. mobile/ heavy activity, you will inevitably adding or removing layers throughout the day and into night. You definitely don't have to go overboard with layers overall, acclimation does factor into comfort and how many layers is comfortable to wear on an individual basis.
Wool is still king up here, a good surplus Wool Commando Sweater is excellent alongside the tried and true M65 Field Jacket with a Fleece or Woobie liner. I also recommend Red Bird or Under Armour Lv. 3 or 4 Thermals for a baselayer in severe cold.
Rain Shell Jackets are a good option too (i.e. 5.11 Duty Rain Shell), they aren't porous so they retain heat really well for how thin they are, but you will also sweat if moving a lot, just something to be mindful of with layers but they're also great for keeping you dry from Snowfall and such.
I've done a video on Sleep Systems too, to supplement extreme cold, apart from ECWCS specific systems, you can get a good rated civilian poly-fill sleeping bag and use a Mil Bivy cover together to lighten the carried load with minimal components. I use a Eureka Sleeping bag rated for -25F with a Bivy cover and it keeps me hella warm without having to stay clothing-layered up heavily.
Insofar as your face when sleeping, a 3-hole ski mask is much better than a Balaclava, moisture that builds up on face coverings can ice over and cause both cold weather injuries and breathing restriction (exception to that is specifically designed vented masks/ coverings).

I’ll have to go watch your video man and definitely. Yah i only wear that balaclava for opsec reasons but i have merino wool beanies and neck gaiter. Thoughts on wool field scarfs

      @@protectpersevere2030 Right on.
Wool Scarves and Shemaghs are fine/ good for winter too yeah, a good barrier where appropriate, I wore a Shemagh around my neck in the last Polar Vortex where it hit -55F during the day here, was plenty comfy, just have to be smart about breathing and the moisture buildup therein (which wool is fine for).

Soft shell layer is the most important and used ecwcs layer. Read the US ecwcs manual you should never wear that much stuff at once.

I mentioned in the video that id probably never wear that many layers but was more of here’s some options and configure as u want. Also i don’t live in an alpine or really cold environment but the temperature does change rapidly where i live so layers are nice.

@@protectpersevere2030 the ecwcs manual will teach you how to layer more effectively for different weather conditions; and proper placement of the layers ie gortex goes under marshmallow layer.

@@swalker157 If it’s pouring rain isn’t your marshmallow suit going to get soaked tho. Also there’s a lot of other systems ei european systems not just the us ecwcs

    • @swalker157

@@protectpersevere2030 no not if you have a modern “puffy layer”(primaloft, climashield, etc). Modern puffy layers are non soaking and insulate when wet. All ecwcs systems are basically the same philosophy but may use different materials.
