My sister had a white '94 Hyundai Scoupe 5 Speed that she bought brand new on her 18th birthday in November 1993. She drove the car until it started having nonstop problems with the clutch while on her way to work one day in Summer 1998. So, she replaced that car with a new '99 Ford Explorer XLT. Plus, she was engaged to be married at the time and would have her first child a year later. So, it was time for her to buy a family vehicle. Overall experience, she liked her Hyundai and wished she kept it had it not had any problems with the clutch or anything. Now it's almost 2023 and there's not too many of these cars left. A lot of these cars today are long gone.
@@youtoobe169 I owned one, first real tuner project. The engine is BTW a Mitsubishi colt 1.5 rally "clone" with internal oil cooled pistons. It was made with a series of engine building equipment from Mitsubishi, which Hyundai had purchased for this specific car, what sort of deal they made that even included the exact plans/manufacturing procedures is unknown, however all OEM colt 1,5 rally parts fit 100%. Then engine is good for 1,2 bars stock, just needs bigger turbo and ECU over-pressure cutout flashed out, but expect crankshaft bearing to wear out every 75.000km or so. The entire suspension setup was made by Lotus, do not change a thing! It's very stiff, tho easy to drive and corners amazing External there's often rust problem with the roof, that can get expensive to fix as the rear window is very hard to get out/off without destroying it As a project car it would be very fun for you. It got a great stock setup, nice durable (and legendary) engine, very low weight. Beefed up with a small hybrid turbo (like from sx200) it can easy pull away from a modern chiptuned Q7
I actually remember that I saw one of these cars on the bus heading down town Edmonton and I got very excited about seeing it on the bus and wow was it so clean aka stock because I have never seen one of these cars so clean and I have never seen it since
I bought it brand new in 93 , bigger turbo aftermarket ecm and ran in the 12 back in 97stock engine, engine is super tuff, same engine on accent 95-99, my son have an accent and ran 7.3 in the 1/8 mile
I had one when I lived in Seoul in 1995. The only thing I remember about it was that the lower passenger rocker panel filled with rainwater. To remedy the problem I used a hammer and nail to poke holes underneath. Problem solved.
Had one too in U.K. the mvti …. Turbo went at 60k. I opted to have Hyundai repair it costing way too much. At this point I was in too deep and had to keep it ….12m later the cam broke a ’dowel’ on one end and proceeded to smash most valves and 3 pistons. Same dealership really looked after me and rebuilt the engine for the same cost as the Turbo job. Decided I didn’t trust it anymore and jumped ship …..trading it in towards a FIAT Bravo! Stoopid is as stoopid does.
Sort of sporty and cool when new in the early 90s for the price. Hyundai was slowly getting better. The Elantra was decent. But for a couple thousand more any Honda Civic would have been a much better choice in 93.
@@jaxandmore440 bullshit, you can make 130hp or more from a naturally aspirated engine of the same size, imagine with a turbo. just the Scoupe that has an underdeveloped engine.
@@jaxandmore440 The motor is an outdated technology. They could only do so much with a 1.5L sohc 12 valve design. Most Japanese compact cars in the 90's had a dohc 16 valve design, which is newer than an outdated 12 valve 70's and early 80's design. 130hp would be easy to achieve if it were a 1.5L dohc 16 valve design.
@@moeschizlac the power output was perfectly on par for the early 90s. The Ford Escort 1.9L made 88hp. The Camry DOHC 2.0L made 120hp. I could go on an on. Welcome to the early 90s.
My friends and I were and still are car guys. We used to call this car the "Scrap" instead of "Scoupe". fact is, this car is not fast by anymeans, there are a bunch of N.A. engines within the same engine volume with more power from that era. wow. I was expecting at least 160 hp with this turbo version
i ran 12.3@116mph with one of these back in 2001...love these cars...it was my first car....if i find one in good condidion i will buy it...love them
This was the beginning, then it was the tiburón after that it was the genesis coupe. Following that it now the N line with the I30/veloster.
