This is Marc Bolan's Sea Foam Green Jaguar. This unbelievable 'Glam Rock' guitar weighs just 8.30 lbs. and has a nut width of 1 5/8 inches and a scale length of 24 inches. Offset asymmetrical 14 inch wide solid alder body. One-piece maple neck with a medium profile. Brazilian rosewood 'veneer' fretboard with 22 jumbo frets and clay dot position markers. Headstock with matching "Sea Foam Green" finish and decal with "Fender" logo in gold with black trim, "Jaguar" in black in bold letters, and three patent numbers in black below. With "Offset Contour Body" at the ball end of the headstock. Single "butterfly" string tree with metal spacer. Individual Kluson 'single-line' Deluxe tuners with oval metal buttons and "D-169400 / Patent No." stamped on the underside - except for the 'A' tuner which is blank (but absolutely original) on the underside. Four-bolt neck plate with the serial number "L46649" between the top two screws. The neck is stamped "1 MAR 64 B". Two white oblong Strat-like pickups with notched metal side plates and outputs of 6.92k and 6.31k. Three-layer (white/black/white) plastic pickguard with ten screws. Two controls (one volume, one tone) and jack socket on lower metal plate adjoining pickguard on treble side, selector switch and two roller controls (one volume, one tone) on upper metal plate adjoining pickguard on bass side, and three slide switches on metal plate inset into the pickguard on the treble side. Black plastic knobs with eight sides and white markings. The potentiometers are dated "304-6421" (Stackpole, May1964). Jaguar / Jazzmaster floating tremolo and bridge with adjustable mute. Original tremolo arm with black plastic tip. All hardware (except for tremolo arm) gold-plated. This guitar has been expertly refretted with jumbo size frets (either by Marc Bolan or Henri Padovani). On the underside of the neck heel is the Fender factory blind-stamp "2849 / F. GREEN" and under the pickguard (between the two pickup cavities) is another Fender factory blind-stamp "1111 / F GREEN". The neck cavity has the name "Tony" written in black. The sliding 'locking-nut' on the tremolo assembly is missing - so the tremolo system cannot be 'locked' (Bolan probably broke it off - it's a useless part of the assembly anyway). On the back of the guitar there are two areas (measuring approximately 2 x 1 1/2 inches and a smaller area measuring 1 1/2 x 3/4 inches) of considerable belt buckle wear where the paint finish is off. There is also some additional belt buckle wear on the back, a small gouge on the side of the upper horn (measuring approximately 3/8 x 1/8 inch), a few small marks on the edges, and some nice finish checking. Otherwise this guitar is in remarkably fine condition. Only four Foam (or Sea Foam) Green Jaguars from this year are known, and this is the only one known with gold hardware. It was owned by Marc Bolan of T Rex and later by Henri Padovani of The Police. Housed in the original Fender light brown Tolex case with brown leather ends and burnt orange plush lining (9.00). Together with a letter of authenticity from Chris Trigg of Vintage & Rare (London & Bath), who purchased the guitar from Henri Padovani nearly thirty years ago, a letter from Henri Padovani explaining the circumstances in which Bolan gave him the guitar in the mid 1970s. Also included is a copy of the article from Guitarists Magazine (May 1997) "I'll call you Jaguar if I may be so bold" "Guitarist's own Jeepster, Robbie Gladwell takes a closer look at the Jag that was once driven by a tyrannosaurus" and a color photograph of Marc Bolan performing with the guitar.
Best review ever. This is how guitars should make you behave.
+Craig Campbell YES!! Yes, you're right! Nice point.
haha damm rite !!!!
There is something about that particular jaguar that haunts me seriously. The Tone - like no other jaguar - the look - VERY RARE Finish
Dave Wray actually, you may be right, cause every guitar that's owned by a guy that knows what they're doing eventually gets setup for optimal performance and tone
love this guy's energy
Judge Steve yikes. you must be fun at parties. we’re all here to watch the guy play a vintage jaguar.
Relax guys, don't take him so seriously, dudes just having fun and entertaining. I like the man. Makes me laugh. Its not supposed to be serious , lighten up and smile.
I love Phil’s Energy, he seems so happy to make a living doing what he loves.
"Guitars are making music with" Phil always brings out the best. No other demo guy comes close.
Nice! Bolan was a genius!
Phil is always fun and plays great..thanks
I love Phil X.... I met him at the camp he mentioned once, and he was a faculty. It was literally one of the best experiences of my life... I can't wait to see him again in 2012 :)
Everyone picks on Phil, he may come off as cocky and douchey, but really he is just super hyper and enthused and you learn to love him for it
Ang5ty Comments and a fine guitar player
Yung Ang5t errr no. He is a douche and bolan will be turning in his grave.
Not at all. He's a fantastic player.
asianaxeman he's no where near a douche! Just a guy who loves rock n roll...that's all. He's got mad skills too! He makes me happy when I feel like shit, that's usually every day...I'm disabled and in pain! I get a real kick out of watching him act crazy! I forget about reality for 10 minutes!
As long as he watches his language ..
This Guitar given to Marc Bolan by Paul McCartney... so its prob' worth even more now! .. wonder if its one of the Guitars 'Stolen' from Marc Bolans house after he had been tragically killed in 1977
No he's not on drugs.Just a kid who's living his dream. If you practice, mabye it can happen to you also.
Always watch a Phil video to get me pumped up and hit the gym,.....
Best run-down of the controls on the Jaguar I've ever seen. I have never played one, but always wondered how they worked.
i love sea-foam green it looks so pretty
Finally, a guitar review that actually showed a guitar what it's meant to do, I want a Fender Jaguar for post-punk and shoegaze purposes, and other late 80s/early 90s guitar movements. I'm glad he played SLTS.
It was actually meant for rock and rollrz of the early 60s but yeah i see what ya mean
Phil your enthusiasm is contagious dude!
probably the reason Bolan gave it away was he was a Les Paul man, to tiny for him.
I love this guitar, total signature fender sound to it. even love the color, but for Bolan ? no way jose.
Very unusual to find in this colour, even without this progeny. I have a custom colour CIJ one from about 2001 just like it. Never seen another one like it, anywhere.
real pretty guitar
wish i owned a marc bolan axe
This must be the best guitar review EVER!!!!!!!
No, you should find his review of a 1959 Fender Esquire. Over the top, in the most musical way.
WE NEED THIS GUYS ENERGY OMG
facts. love your profile pic too
I couldn't help but look at Phil's wrist when he played teen spirit lol
fender always had the coolest colors
when i first saw the phil x videos , i thought he was annoying, but the more i watch the more i want to get to know the guy and jam with him. rock on phil
n/
Love this guy.. but I wouldn't dare play Marc's guitar. I mean... Marc actually held it, sang with it, most likely loved for it. The amount of love I have for Marc's days overpowers *everything* I have. To own that guitar would change my life, but to scratch or break it would tear me apart. And to play it would break my heart, I wouldn't have the right. But like I said, this guy is awesome!
Gemma Fisher I get your point, man, but we seem to think quite different xD the first and only thing I would do if I get to hold one of my favourite guitar players' instrument is play it. Play it until I fucking die!
blopa blopex haha yeah I don't blame you for that!! I would with absolutely anyone else, I'm just emotionally attached to Marc. I wish I had the strength to play it, amazing guitar!
joe stahl I have a replica of one of Marc's other guitars, I love to play the hell out of it :)
How many guitars actually broke, while you were playing them?
OldTeaMate none :)
This guy enjoys himself
Scott Stapp sings T. Rex
Glad to see u back Phil
This was one of the hard core music kids in high school that everyone hated..
Exactly hahah, but this guy can actually play
That was badass and confident which is how a guitar player should be!
T. Rex is so underrated :l Phil is awesome--always on point, entertaining, and funny.
The first switch in the lead circuit is NOT a "phase inverter", it is a HIGH PASS FILTER. It just engages a capacitor that bleeds off the lows and allows only signals above a certain frequency to pass to the amplifier.
Anything sounds cool when Phil X plays it!
PhilX has been playing guitar for a LONG time. I think he knows what he`s doing.
Dude, you are a ton of fun to watch! Relative guitar n00b here, already dreaming about my “next guitar” which brought me to you! Love the energy, fun, and goofiness you bring to your videos. Will check out more - rock on, my dude!
Great tones and he's tearin it up while havin a ball...
Love the jaguar body shape. I've got an old mahogany dresser that I think I might use to make a jaguar/firebird hybrid. Jag body, raised center, firebird headstock, 3 mini hums, and a maestro.
I'm glad Phil X plays rock on a Jaguar. He's like the only guy on youtube who reviews a Jaguar and doesn't drown the shit out of it with reverb and tremolo. I understand it's a surf guitar but give me a break.
Man some people take things soooo seriously. The guitars are ace, Phil X is ace , the whole thing is ace! Just enjoy all these wonderful guitars, sit back and watch the entertainment roll!!!!
The Jazz Master with two P90s are fantastic guys! They leave Jaguars far back with the near forgotten Mustangs. I have never seen a jazz dude play a Jazz Master.
I might have missed the point, but Jazzmasters actually have single coils, they're not p90s. Just thought you might wanna know.
ya know p90s are single coil, right?
Yeah. All p90's are single coils, but not all single coils are p90s. Jazzmaster pickups are single coils but not p90s.
Oh, i thought you were implying p90's arent single coil. i know jazzmaster pickups are just fat single coils
+Rob Broome yes I know P90s are bigger single coils with more range. They can have the 60 cycle buzz like other single coil pups get.
7:52 the only time anyone has ever made me laugh playing guitar. Thank you, Phil. Thank you, thank you!
Sea foam is my favorite color, it just gets better with age
+TheCrewesin Somehow it always associates with Weezer for me. Not sure if they even had a sea foam guitar in there.
+scubadog2000 yea actually they did Rivers uses a sea foam strat
Beauty Timbre ... I love Fender Jaguar
Dude I have a '62 Jaguar and couldn't believe you didn't even mention the built in palm mute capabilities on that guitar!! It's the only guitar I know of that has that switch and it's an interesting aspect worth pointing out. Granted I don't think anyone really uses it but still it's cool.
@PopExpo and the coolest looking and sounding!
I can't help but get the feeling that I would incredibly enjoy jamming with this guy while intoxicated.
"Get it on" : best version ever !
A friend left his Jag at my house for a while in high school; natural finish, block inlays... it was cool, very interesting guitar, but what I remember most was notes going dead on bends. There'd be no metal or classic rock if Jaguars and Jazzmasters were all there were to choose from.
Prolly was a shitty jag then
Jeffrey Jones definitely needed to be setup properly because for a bolt-on neck these guitars had sustain for days. As for there being no metal or classic rock if these were the only guitars available, if IF was a fifth we'd all be drunk because these were Leo's later models made to compete with cheap imports for students. And that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing imo.
I Love This Guitar!!! ♦♣♠♥
WHAT'S UP MAN!!!!!!!!! IT'S PHIL X!!!!!!!!!!!
greece loves phil!!!!
Thats right. I actually know Henry Padovani and asked him about this ages ago, he had no idea what guitar I was on about. FYI, Henry still tours with the flying Padovanis and did play with Queen in London a few years ago. Nice guy
this guy rules!
honestly I would rather listen to Phil X than most other guitarist since he is so interesting
Excellent
guitar sounds sick..love it!
So much for getting a deal on a Jaguar or Jazzmaster after Phil gets done taking you on the demo ride of your life.
Phil Alway up and always fun!
The guitar looks happy
dude u have some serious mojo
Holy cow, what a freak...I like it!
That is an awesome sounding axe... Phil's riffing around and that tone bring to mind JImi's R&B stuff... and yeah... sea foam green... :)
Jaguars are the best type of guitar
I want a sea foam green strat and jag all of a sudden, with matching headstocks of course
Henri Padovani was the first guitarist in Police before they got famous. He is french, from Corsica, and he is still working in music bisness as a producer.
is this the first time we've heard nirvana out of Phil X? It's awesome!
Rock on Phil X
that strap is just really awesome
This guitar was used by john frusciante in the video of under the bridge. Sorry for my english
wow very nice cover of nirvana
I want this guitar!!!
I can’t believe this came out in 2010
awesome
You're pretty awesome dude! I wish I had half your energy!
Totally Cool Dude Love the VIDEO!!!! Wish everyone could be this funny and informative!!!!
@Stanger182 its dropped tuning dude teen spirit is played in standard tuning (E)and when this was recorded he was tuned a half step down (Eb) so it didnt sound as it usually would but as far as playing it on the right frets and everything he was dead on
That's just straight jammin hommie!
Phil.....thats cool mate. Not only are you funny but you can play!
Keep on rockin'...........from a massive Bolan fan
Greetings from Oz
I love him
The Flying Padovanis are GREAT!
I want a guitar that colour now.
Marc Bolan was great btw.
Phil X is as well.
I've got a 80's Japanese Squier Pbass that i refinned in Sea Foam Green & added a Duncan 1/4 pounder & a Wilkinson bridge with brass saddles & its the cats titties now! It not only looks great but sounds huge & Sustainy too..I play it just as much as my Fender Jazz & my Precision..
I refined a '72 Re-Issue Strat that is for sale now on FleaBay ... It looks and sounds Amazing. Like a 20th Century Boy
It's so funny! The jag sounds like T. Rex! Love Mark Bolan sooo much and I want that guitar!!! And it wouldn't have been to bad to meet him either. :))
this guy is the living embodiment of buttrock. and i fucking love it
Once I saw Marc Bolan on the video's title, I just flipped!
The audio compression and Phil X's full-on approach doesn't do this guitar any justice whatsoever
i love tuning to Eb. i could tell he was in half step down
I love it!!!
FACT ! .. This Guitar was given to 'Marc Bolan' by 'Paul McCartney' ! .. I got to know Marc in the year before he died and i clearly remember him telling me about it. - :) - There is a short Video on my page here of pics of him & me and also him saying 'Hello' to my Mother!!
@corso1983 No.. Fender Bass VI is one octave lower just like any other bass. baritone guitars can be tuned low b or low c, your choice.
everyone loves sea foam green. EVERYONE.
LOLOLOL... I was waiting for the "every breath you take"... and got denied... Funny Stuff man!
This is a fantastic way to review a guitar, and show it off. Much better than just sitting on a chair and spouting some boring old crud. Great stuff. I want that guitar by the way :D
The first time I saw and heard Phil talk I knew he was Canadian.
wow right before you played nirvana i was thinking of the song. :)
This was my brother's first guitar, but he had a black one.
Phil, you're cool, funny.......and can play the guitar!!
Keep on rockin'
Bolan/T.Rex Rule!! OK!
This guy don't need PA to sing Smells like teen spirit. Nice that he played some T-Rex and Police. Great bands.
