      Found at valve developer community
      ...tweaks to existing levels. When we started the project making any big structural change in a level or the order of levels would lead to hours or even days of busy work trying to reconnect things and make sure they lined up again. If we ever wanted to ship something the size of Portal with the finely tuned balance we desired then *we needed a way to be able to make big changes to the layout of the game without paying the cost of making everything line up again. We needed a way to bend space. We needed to think with portals.* Using portals to connect different areas in the world we could make any type of impossible space work out. You could look through a hallway into the next room but the hallway might be on the other side of the map and the room you are looking into might be in a completely different orientation. We could seamlessly insert an elevator, a huge expansive vista, a room that was bigger on the inside than the outside, or even create an infinite fall by connecting a shaft back into itself. Soon every connection between any space was a portal. We would even switch them on the fly. Even a simple door worked like the cartoons - just a facade painted on a wall that seamlessly opened somewhere else entirely. Once the game settled down we were able to finalize our path and remove all of the world portals. *There's only one impossible space left in the whole game - see if you can figure out where it is*. -Eric Tams in the Portal 2 Developer Commentary.

      The original Prey (the one with the Native American character) actually did utilize several of the concepts from this test chamber as gameplay elements five years before Portal 2 was released and six years before this video was uploaded, so yes, an entire game like this is possible.

      Henry Ambrose it has already been done in Tomb Raider, you can download a level viewer and you can see the layers of the level at once. In particular, the level Area 51 in TR3 this uses this heavily with the alien spaceship.

    If you wanna hide the render 'errors' that show multiple portals and can reveal the trick, put the phantom hall deeply beneath the true hall. No reason to look off the illusions axis.

      Actually it is the magic of Portal 2, or to be more precise, magic of Portal 2 engine branch, or to be even more precise, magic entity named linked_portal_door
      Turn the shaders medium
      Open any basic peti map
      Beat it
      While going to the exit elevator, look back at the door
      You'l see it turned into some kind of white hole
      You found a worldportal!

    • @Wylie288
      @Wylie288 6 лет назад +1

      They aren't portals though. Computers don't deal in physical space if you don't require them to.

    • @itsCh4rl1e

      dude literally go look up how the Source engine does it. It's effectively the same portal entity that the player portals utilise. Your comment is complete nonsense

    • @Wylie288
      @Wylie288 6 лет назад +1

      It can be, but source engine is capable of creating areas that are not physically possible. Its done one in Portal 2 and various times on the Half-Life series, and no, they do not use portal entities. They don't need to.

    Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, and that was some.

    • @MikeRosoftJH
      @MikeRosoftJH 5 лет назад

      Therefore, any technology which can be distinguished from magic is not sufficiently advanced.
      After all, when you operate household appliances, do you need to care how exactly they work? No; you just do X (e.g. press a button), and Y happens (e.g. a lamp is lit). It could as well have been magic.

      RetroSpace it's a horror wiki that has a few thousand phenomenon type creatures, items and/or locations. Each are documented like a scientific study of each monster given there own number. In the case of the video the phenomenon would be non-euclideon time travel. Maybe add a monster in there and it would be given a SCP number assuming it was on the wiki.

    I believe that I know how this works... You made it so that when you touch a trigger it stretches the level, and at the other side it stretches it back and teleports you to the appropriate location. The glass that shows an alternate reality was achieved by using what I believe to be called skyboxes. I'm not 100% sure about the glass but I am sure that I'm close with the expanding corridor. If I'm wrong then correct me in the comments and maybe teach me your ways you magnificent source engine fairy.

    I mean, nothing's even undergoing decoherence, so this section must not be of quantum instance - but yet, it declines natural geometric logic. Well, it remains non-Euclidean, right?
    Your own spherical eyeballs, with it's pupil section, must exist as a hyperbolic surface or something in order to comprehend such a thing. I mean, they must be, otherwise the whole building would be impossible, right? Perhaps it may not exist as _hyperbolic,_ but nonetheless the point is it's not Euclidean.

    Nice Demo, would love an actual game tho. Anyone developing this kinda thing out there?

      2006's Prey played around with this concept and incorporated many of the ideas from this video into the mechanics and progression of the game, and they did it 5 years before Portal 2 even came out.

      It's a decent sci-fi action fps. It's not great, and the graphics haven't aged well, but it did some very unique and interesting things mechanics-wise.

      There is a game called Antichamber... you might like it

      No duh, I love AntiChamber. It was also pretty short tho
      I basically love anything that remotely resembles Portal lol
      I got a Portal Clone Folder in my Steam Library actually, there's: Aperture Tag, The Ball, DeadCore, Fract OSC, Polarity, Q.U.B.E and Quantum Conundrum.
      There's many more puzzle games with fun concepts that kinda take the same test chamber approach. Rochard, The Swapper, frign Trine, World of Goo. I got more but I think we're covered lol.
      I could go for another Portal game tho which uses Antichamber concepts and makes it 8 hours long. I'd love it if someone went ahead and made that ^^
