Bingo! Exactly what I thought listening to it. Phil back when he could sing. As for Lombardo, what can you say. that signature sound on the snare and style that just well.... DOMINATES.
He was an awesome performer, too. I saw him live on the first Unholy Alliance tour. In the middle of the Follow the Reaper solo, he launched a massive gob of spit in the air, took like two steps back, and swallowed it when it came down. One of the greatest moments of my young life. Mastodon had a tough act to follow after that insanity, but they rose to the occasion.
Well now you can spend time checking out his works. I know I'm a fan boy. But that dude really was special. Write killer riffs and solos, playing some licks that were harder than some bands solos while singing. Just endless creativity, his own instantly recognizable style. I think he was kind of a randy Rhodes in that regard. Not just amazing solos, amazing song writing. He had hundreds more songs to write. Salute to that legend and all the others that earned that status.
I remember interviewing Jeff in his tour bus when Metal came out. I asked him if he was gonna play Downright Dominate that night. He said "No I ain't gonna play a 3-minute Alexi Laiho solo on stage!" Humble dude, I'm sure he would nail it like crazy. Great version, Stu and Dave do an awesome job. Please keep them in the band, lock them up in your man cave if need be!
I remember win a ticket to see Alexi Laiho.... it was a monday (working day so) and no friends to come with me. So I take my car alone and go see the super show.... no regrets because I had see him for the first and last one :( RIP Alexi ! I also saw Annihilator on this scene later.... It was in Toulouse,France !
Waking up in Canada, first morning under 0c : "This morning is gonna suck..." Sees Annihilator remake : "This is going to be an awesome morning in the office" 🤘🤘
yup! Which one?! hahaha! He was the best. Beautiful person, flawed as all of us, but a musical genius with his guitar. Like a Super Charged Randy Rhoads, Ed, Marty, etc...
I agree! I love Padden's vocals on this album, and I think Lombardo did a fantastic job, but who's to deny Mangini? This will be great for Annihilator though, as far as helping them regain North American recognition.
Oh hey Alexi, we met again! Your playing is always vivid even if how long it took. Well, I haven’t known this release till today. The order of the tracks are different from the original, so I shall check if that’ll be worth listening to for my new joy with the new Metal or not out :) Clown Parade and Chasing the High might be, I’m sure, highlights this time again!
Thanks Jeff, it was a real treat to listen to this. I wanted to ask if you were at all familiar with the musical project Ayreon, lead by Arjen Anthony Lucassen. He has had many great guests so I would absolutely love to see collaboration there between you and Arjen. Much love and respect - Pheebz
Really looking forward to Dave Lombardo's take on Chasing the High, he must be one or the only drummers around that can match Mike Mangini's talent (No offense to Mike Harshaw, your era of Annihilator was my favorite). What i would do for a Weapon X re-recording with this lineup!
No offence to Lombardo, he’s a fucking beast, but he’s also one of the least “technical” drummers in metal, i.e. he plays everything extremely instinctively, as opposed to Mangini who maps out every single note in each song. Dave has a really hard time repeating fills live, he does some “for the fans”, but everything else (including the original recordings of those fills) were and are improvised. He just doesn’t like to play the same thing more than once. Schizo Deluxe is probably the hardest Annihilator album to play on drums; you can actually watch Mangini recording it here on youtube. It’s EXTREMELY technique-driven, EXTREMELY fast. Lombardo is essentially a jazz drummer playing metal, and would likely fail to reproduce Mangini’s performance. It could be interesting, but the songs would sound VERY different. It would be like Marty Friedman - my very favourite guitarist of all time - trying to play a Jeff Loomis solo. It could be done, but probably not enjoyably by the performers and wouldn’t add much to the songs - unless they essentially re-wrote them.
@@gab.lab.martins I totally agree with you, what you say is not offensive. Dave Lombardo is the drummer who prompted me to play drums but he doesn't have Magnini's (or Paul Bostaph's) technique. The highlight of Lombardo is the groove he has, which is why I still prefer Slayer's live shows with Lombardo and not Bostaph
@@Lucrei. the video I’m referencing is Mangini playing Weapon X. I listened to the song after the video back to back, and it sounds exactly the same, notes and tone. If they’re not the same drum track, Waters programmed/hired someone else to replicate Mangini’s playing. I haven’t seen the credits on the album, so I could be wrong, but to my trained ears it sure sounds like the video in question is the final recording.
So used to hearing the original version it was jarring hearing Stu at first, but this is still a great track. Lombardo kills of course, and the amazing solo tradeoffs are still amazing (RIP Alexi).
Metal is one of my favourite newer Annihilator albums, with a stunning performances from all (stellar) musicians involved - therefore this announcement surprised me... anyway, can´t wait to hear the new versions of the songs with another stellar personnel!
Man, this is one hell of a f+++g surprise!! Had not followed Annihilator for quite some while, and this rediscovery is ridiculously amazing. If the rest of their new album is this good, they are going to smash it. Superb, guys!!
We're all thinking it, so I'm just going to say it, THIS LINEUP NEEDS A NEW ALBUM. If there ever was a chance for Annihilator to return to their 80s/90s popularity level, THIS IS IT. This could become the definitive Annihilator lineup, and it's very strange that I'm writing this in 2021.
If the future of Annihilator is a real drummer and real producer, I could consider getting back on board. I once owned all of Jeff's albums, but now I own NONE because I got so sick of his fake production and cheesy songwriting. He's been playing the same riffs and solos for 30 years and needs a producer to pull him out of the comfort zone.
@@HeavyMetalSonicRM the producer thing is an issue with most bands that got big enough to bypass the producer as an authority. So yeah, I agree. However, he got Lombardo on board for this project, which is a big step in the right direction, so if he keeps this lineup you wont have to listen to programmed drums anymore. Now, all we need is an album with these guys and good songs.
Padden already recorded the original vocals on this album! They are keeping the original version, and doing a Metal 2 with Lombardo and the Iced Earth guy.
Love it. Love everything about it 🤘🖤🖤🤘 The fucking dream team is forged!! Also when you guys drop the re recorded version of Clown Parade I will cry tears of pure bloody joy
I'm a die hard fan of Padden's era and voice, and this is a goddamn good re-recording, Stu absolutely nailed it. Btw, is it me, or these are Padden's screams along with Stu's? if they are, holy shit, they sound amazing.
I hate to say this and I'm thrilled to say this at the same time. This is the first time they've had a legitimately solid vocalist in over 20 years. Alice in hell and never-neverland are still by far their best albums. But this new material is really growing on me

Is quite hard since Alexi is dead.

Dave Lombardo in Annihilator. Absolutely awesome!!!
