Dexterous comes from the word Dextra, in Latin, that means "right", or "right hand" in som context. It's still used in Italian, as destra is the right side, and sinistra is the left. Needles to say that 90% of world people is right handed, so, using dextra generally means using the better able hand. Here in Brasil, who is right handed is "destro", and left handed is "canhoto".
