Is it me, or has David become the thing lately?.I see his name popping up in tons of places. Well deserved, a very humble but killer and tasteful player. Keep it up! Thank you for sharing this. Great interview! Can't wait to grab my DGT SE. So inspiring.
Your first question was very interesting in that I have a dozen guitars and six amps. The guitars range in price from $139 to $6000, to a priceless 1966 Fender Jazz Bass in blond, which they made very few of that year. Some of these have single coils, others have humbuckers. The amp prices range from FREE to $1000. And you can’t judge the sound of any of the amps by their prices. Some are all-tube, some are solid state, and one has a tube preamp and a solid state power amp (a Vox!). So I’m not sure how the question even applies in my case. And by the way, I got the first of this batch of guitars in 1987, and haven’t sold a one of them! EVER! And how do I keep missing these LIVE streams?! This hour+ just FLEW by! Hands down the best interview I´ve ever heard with a guitar player. Everything he says is so right, from beginning to the end.. old Marshall 4hollers, Braz stumpwood blunder, Blackguard Tele bridge pickup magic... I could go on and on... he knows it all, and is such a nice person
I just bought a DGT (2009) and I saw David at Saxon by luck. I was at a safety conference and decided to walk to a guitar shop and the sign said DAVID Grissom tonight at 6:00 pm. I left went back to hotel changed and went back see him and it was so personal and up close and what a great musician. I’ve always gone back to the strat but just received my DGT guitar today. It’s a beauty with 10 top. I really like DG and would love to see him come to mid Florida area. He was playing his DGT with his amp. Great show!

Woke up and watched a bit (6am here in Tokyo) and enjoyed it. Came home after work and enjoyed it more. I think I'm a single coils guy, but David's tone makes me wonder. Keith you're supposed to help me have less gear!
Glad to see more of the beautiful semi-hollow DGT and that they are possibly working on making a run.
He's totally right about the importance of speakers.......they really do make up a large part of the sound in an amp.
It's always the last piece.
You can have the best amp with the best speakers, if your microphone is a piece of crap, the recording of that amazing sounding amp is going to sound like crap too.
You can have the most amazing amp, the speakers can be shredded and garbage, it's going to sound awful.
You can have the best setup guitar, plays amazing, if the pickups are shit, you're going to hear the shit pickups more than anything else. You'll be trying to 'fix' the sound through your amp instead of just focusing on playing and enjoying the sound because the pickups are the sound you're after instead of working against you.
You can have the best pickups and if all your pedals are degrading your signal, you're still sending a bad signal to your amp and trying to 'fix' it there.
Etc. etc. You can have the best everything and if your cable doesn't work... well!

David’s tone tips are all good things to consider as building blocks when you are chasing what you want your sound to be. I started listening to him in the early ‘90’s. His sound and playing have evolved through the years but I think the foundation is relatively the same: a responsive vintage-influenced guitar with pickups that aren’t too hot. And, a tube amp that really responds to your playing dynamics. Don’t put too much between the guitar and amp and keep the amount of gain in check. I’ve followed that basic recipe and have gotten some gear that really works for me and sounds great. Last thing….David plays the guitar AND the amp - they work in harmony to channel what he is going after musically. Oh…and you need to woodshed a lot to get your playing together.

I just bought one of each today. Spent about the same on each. Neither would be considered expensive in todays terms, both second hand, pre infused with vibe. I myself would love to have one of each that I connect with. I covet expensive amps more than expensive guitars. I am more of a producer than player. This channel and others are mostly responsible for my guitar wanderlust . I am grateful.
Keith, this is just awesome! After a long day at work, getting to watch this and being inspired to grab the guitar and just got at it speaks volumes imho.

My 2 cents: Amp. You can do some good setup on a relatively cheap guitar and make it play and sound pretty darn good. A cheap amp can make your expensive guitar sound bad. Having said that, it does depend on total budget. I could gig happily with a Vax-AC15 which is not very expensive.
I would agree. Not really a good person, I’m a huge fan, to talk about this. He’s got access to endless… Stufffs. Amps. Us poor bedroom plucking mortals need to make the “here’s THE only amp or THE only guitar I’ll be playing from now till who knows when.” Just my two pennies. Still a fan of both y’all.
Really it's a crazy thing I have a 65 and 72 plus a CS model but the way a pawn shop Squier plays and sounds Stays in tune I put a better bridge in but I could easily and happily gig with it Just goes to show

More proof that Keith and others here have created a great guitar community where we can talk about topics that matter to us. Many people in the comments add great insight to the discussion, others like Jeff McErlain help to line up great speakers, and something like this discussion happens. David Grissom’s tone and touch are beyond good and is vastly underrated and often not included in a discussion of the best players. But, those of us in this group are “in the know” about David and can appreciate his lifetime of experience being a tone chaser. For all of the hot air out there on the internet about guitars and amps and whatever this is like an oasis in the desert. David has been around the block more than once, played with countless big-name artists, been a Nashville studio cat, songwriter, producer, helped design a signature guitar and amp with PRS……and on and on. Thank you Keith and David for this candid conversation.

Great interview. I was Lucky enough to see David with the Allman Brothers at the Garden State Art Center(Now PNC Bank center) in NJ. I didn’t know who he was at the time but I remember not being disappointed once the music started. Again , another great job Keith

I absolutely love the clean tone of the Jazz Chorus. My favorite set up is using a JC40 with a tube amp (currently an Egnater Tweaker 40, which i want to replace with an EL84 based amp, something like the Victory Copper preferably, or a Hiwatt T40/20C for a more budget friendly option.) in a wet dry configuration. Tube amp for the dry, still clean, but adds some color and provides that responsiveness we have come to love about tube amps, and the Jazz chorus wet to bring that sterile definition and clarity it provides. The Jazz Chorus is definitely not an amp for someone looking to bring a bunch of character to your tone. Its the most neutral amp i have ever heard, and only does squeaky clean, but thats why i love it so much.
Thnx so much for these video's. I'm kinda new to PRS myself and now I have two SE guitars: DGT gold top and a Hollowbody-II piezo SE. I'm just done with Gibson and Fender. That's for one. Second I would like to share with you guys is that just listening to you and Mr. Grissom talk has helped me landing so to speak my struggles for the right sound and gear. I've come to realize that I will probably never ever come to terms with it just because I as a human and an amateur musician are constantly in progress, both musically and soundwise. So what's perfect today may not be perfect tomorrow. I have sold and bought so many guitars and amps and spent so much money on it - it's a wonder I'm still married. Nevertheless: if there is one thing I'm sure of it is that my Hollowbody-II piezo SE will never ever be sold. Regarding the DGT gold top it is to early to say anything but as far as my experience with it it's allso a stayer. I picked that one up yestareday so I haven't had much playing time on it but the sound of it is amazing and far beyond any F's or G's. I think I'll have to take it to my tech though because the it seems to me that the nut is not perfectly fit to the hight E string. Or it is just some extremely overtones? I dunno. But I think I'll have it checked up.

I had a pre CBS Bandmaster. Put Altec Lansing speakers in it to replace the Utah's and it completely changed the sound but it was merely an experiment that was successful. I didn't know until I did it. An experienced player would know a few things more. Great interview!

David's time with the Joe Ely band made for some magical moments.
I first encountered Dave Grissom when he was playing guitar for Joe Eley at the Town and Country Club in North London, probably in 1990 and he was astonishing ..... truly astonishing and that in a time of amazing players. It was one of the best gigs I've ever seen.
We saw him same tour (dig all night) in Manchester,and it was that good we drove the two hours two nights later to see em in Birmingham…
Took me a year to find this, but happy I did! David is one of my favorite players for both style and tone. So tasty! And he is an excellent authority on what makes guitars and amps sound good. Maybe he doesn't agree with Keith's views on everything but I agree with David; wood matters, and fingers and hands affect tone greatly. His experience shines through! I've had a very nice DGT for a few years and it was the first PRS I thought actually had a real sound and tone. I did finally take off the 11's for 10's, and I actually play it now! LOL... Great interview and discussion!

Let me know how you like it out of the box. I'm thinking about getting an inexpensive Tele and dropping some Seymour Duncan pickups in it. Pickups make a huge difference.
David in the Joe Ely Band was the rockingest that band has been. Saw some amazing shows in Lubbock back in the day.

It took me down a huge rabbit hole on Roy Buchanan and that was fantastic. What a player! What a sound! I can see why DG used him as a guide....and it was all in his hands/guitar...
You should check out Danny Gatton who played with Roy, but not in his band. I personally guarantee that Danny will blow your mind...he was a virtuoso!!!
Hard to beat this video. A lot of things I found thru trial and error so now I have nailed. But without Dave telling me it really is the way to get there I felt maybe I am living with the wrong sound. Things like the speaker choices, keeping the gain in check and finding guitars that by just the dumb luck of the damn tree they were made from sound killer when I thought I should really love my Fender Custom shop better just because it is a Fender Custom shop. When I play my current rig I love it. When I am sitting around thinking about it I think maybe I must me nuts, lol. Thanx to Dave I think I have it nailed and should stop beating myself up.
I had a setup very similar to David's on that first McMurtry Austin City Limits; Tele > blackface reverb unit > 1972 Marshall 50 watt head > early '70s Sound City 4x12. Seeing David ripping it up with his setup just confirmed I was on the right track.
PRS HX/DA and PRS DGT will get you there too
@@maximumguitarage Probably. But those models didn't exist at the time. I ended up getting a PRS Custom 24 a couple years later.
Talking with DG at EXP and hearing his demos influenced me to pick up a DGT in 2012 and a matched Super Dallas + pine 2x12 and never looked back. Never tried to cop DG’s vibe, but the set helped me fine tune my thing. Took me a couple of years to match pedals, but the results were ME and my personality. Huge thanks to DG for helping a meager bar band guitarist up their game, quit fighting gear, and enjoy making music on some nasty stages.
joe Ely was unbelievable on a Outlaw Country cruise a while back. Im ashamed to say i had never heard of him before what a Gem.
Depends on how much you have to spend. If I only had $250 for guitar and amp I'd spend at least $175 on the guitar. If I had $500 I'd split it evenly. If I had $1500 I'd put $1000 on the guitar and $500 on the amp. The quality of the guitar is more important overall, but a $300 amp is better than a $150 amp by a wider margin than a $300 guitar is better than a $150 guitar, and a $1000 guitar is better than a $500 guitar by a wider margin than a $1000 amp is better than a $500 amp...if that makes any sense
Disagree. The difference between a $500 and a $1000 amp is MUCH bigger then the difference between a $500 and a $1000 guitar. $500 Asian guitars are very good quality
@@KelsterVonShredster ok, please enlighten me. I would suggest you do an experiment and go to Sweetwater (or any retailer) and filter out guitars and amps at that price range. You can find high quality pro level guitars in that range from Schecter, Yamaha, Cort, and Squire. On the amp side...... not so much aside from a smaller Katana, certainly if you want tubes there's nothing pro level available at $500.
@@KelsterVonShredster Look it's just my opinion, but you can get some great tube amps for pretty cheap. On reverb right now for under $500 you can get a Peavey Classic 30 or 50, a Bassbreaker 18/30, a Hot Rod Deluxe III, or a Blackstar HT40. Those are all really solid amps. You can definitely get a great guitar for $500, but in todays money I think $1000 will get you something a lot better on average.
To be fair though, it is just an average. The most recent two guitars for me were a PRS S2, and a squier telecaster that I upgraded. Even with the upgrades the tele only came out to half the price of the PRS ($550 vs. $1100) and I honestly love them both. I'm not sure I could rank one above the other, but I can tell you there was an identical squier tele in the same shop I bought mine and even though it played fine (a little better actually) it just didn't have what mine has (or what pretty much any PRS has). In the end it really comes down to your individual preference and what's available for you. Some people might draw the lines differently and that's fine, but for me, where I am now, that's how I'd draw them.
Personally for $250 I'd go 200G/50A. Not everyone wants to buy used stuff guys. I've bought one used guitar in my life, I'd rather buy new and know it's been properly taken care of and maintained. I don't think anyone with a $1000 budget should be spending all $1000 on stuff. Buy that $200 guitar still, buy the $50 amp. If you actually enjoy playing upgrade the amp next, maybe pickups or hardware on the guitar if it would help. There's too many things for guitar, pedals, different amps, different pick up configurations on guitars, different radius', different fret sizes. You don't have all those options to worry about and choose through in the $2-300 range, they're there but not like they are in the $800-1500 range.
@@droliver I think Bugera may be the best bang for the buck, in amps. But a crappy guitar is crappy in any situation:) Price is subjective. I bought a New Old Stock Jackson Professional, about 1990, for $250. The only thing wrong with it is the pups:) We can't separate one from the other, they are a team. There is no part that can exist without the other. That is the quest, get a system that works, ALL things considered. The 1st requirement, in my opinion, is the wood. There is a reason there are "Tone woods"... but you may like the plywood sound:) You may like "Popular", even though it isn't even listed with the "Tone Woods", because it isn't one, and it sux:) I remember in the past I had a Peavey Vandenberg that was AWESOME. Later I bought one that wasn't Mahogany, but popular. It sucked. No amp in the world could make up for the fact that the "popular" had no sustains, no tone. So maybe the 1st in the chain of importance is the wood.

I dig David's playing. One of the best. And he gets some superb tones. I own a PRS too and I absolutely love it. Mine's an SE, but it's still one of the finest guitars I've ever owned, and it sounds and plays and looks wonderful. I find PRS to be very ergonomic, comfortable, not too heavy. Sounds like heaven through my Marshall DSL 20 combo with my SD-1 Waza. That's my entire signal chain. I own three guitars and the PRS and my strat have JBs in the bridge. The PRS has a Jazz neck, my favorite neck pup ever, and the strat an SSL-6 STK. My Schecter has a DiMarzio Steve's Special bridge and Air Norton neck and that guitar's not really working for me so I may trade it in for something else, maybe another SE.
I saw DG with Joe Ely back in 1988 at Tipitina's in New Orleans. I was the "best" live show I've ever seen.
As someone who plays $3000 guitars into $600 amps, I'd definitely go along with the idea of spending more on the guitar. You can find great tones in some surprisingly affordable amplifiers, and while there are some great lower-priced guitars out there, if the guitar that connects with you best is a more pricey one, then it's an easy decision to make.
Yep: That's me:Guitars all worth over $3 grand.But my amp that I mostly use is a just a older '75 Fender twin not a ridiculous expensive amp, under 400 new: but I run in conjunction with a Tweed Fender 4×10 Bassman reissue. My Amps all under $600 hundred bucks when I bought them.. The guitar is definitely more important to me than the amp. For the modern guitarist they have the best selection I've ever seen in 50+ years of playing, ! We didn't even have guitar tuners/ we had to use a pitch fork or piano( if were lucky someone had one).Or tune to the record...picking the needle up n back to spot u wanted to learn. Over n over.
I’m in the other camp,…spend enough to get a good amp and almost anything plugged into the good amp sounds good
Sorta me too. I have some guitars in the 2k-3k, but I then spent some money on a few ‘good’ amps. Also invested in a Fryett PS100. All fits in a bag and can bring my guitar and amp with me. But 100%, your relationship is with the guitar.
Quality guitars don’t have to cost a lot. You can take a $300 Squier, maybe drop in some pickups, and you’re good to go. But if you’re playing through a solid state Crate, it won’t matter how good your guitar is.
David mentioned Ray Hennig. That guy gave me a lot of gear through the years.
Agreed, pickups make a huge difference to tone. Also pickup height. If they are set too low, the tone is soft.
prscustom2112 - Agreed. If you're a gigging player......Spend the money on the amp. That has to be right before anything else.
Not the Squire thing again. You have to do more than drop in pickups. You have to file, sand and polish the frets as well as switch out the cheap components.
@@Musicsports K. Do it. My Classic Vibe 60’s Strat is more playable than my two 1959 Strats or my 1961 Telecaster.
Ray Hennig treated me like dog shit every time I went in to his shop. Was very dissapointed with his character.

I've been waiting/ looking for the right DGT' and BAM! David Grissom himself reaches back and makes my dream come true. I want that semi-hollow burst DGT with Cresent moon inlays.. But I'd be fine if it were Antique White.

Just want to say . At a recent gig I had the tubes go in a fender deluxe. Thanks to being prepared. I had it fixed inside 15 min. How long will it take you to replace a quad core processor in your computer. Digital thing a majig? By Flashlight? Can your local music store fix it? Is it out of warranty? How long will you wait for it to be shipped back to Japan ? How much will it cost? 2 tubes 60 bucks! 15 minutes. No biasing ! Still sounds Great a week later.
i'm as big of a tube fan as they come but it's not uncommon for a tube failure to take other components out with it. at the end of the day, transistors and digital stuff are both more reliable. but they certainly don't sound better. or as good.
Point was old school amp for when its you and you alone is easy to replace a tube fast to get through a gig as opposed to a 2k whatever getting a beer spilled on it and shutting off. I used my backup digital IR to finish the set and still had time to have a smoke at set break and finished with my amp.

My vote is depending on budget. cheap: get a boss katana, expensive: marshall dsl20 or 40. Spend the rest on guitar $$$

I'm Happy with the gear I have for the reasons what I play. I have a Peavey VIP 1, Spark 40, Fender 20 Watt acoustisonic and 1each of 6 guitars widely used. I have the 339, LP Muse, Fender Tele and Strat, Mustang and my Washburn classical and someone made me a hand made acoustic electric guitar. I'm not into sitting through live streams because most don't apply to me because I don't buy sell or trade nor modify. I use to look forward to FWW episodes but now they're over my head. I can use that time to play or my Bible research.

To me the most you can do to improve your tone is upgrade your speakers on most any amp speakers are the most important part in the tone chain and make the biggest difference IMO
I say if you're a touring musician that has to rely on a back line, guitar.
But if you are like most of us, amp.
There are plenty of affordable guitars in the $300 to $600 range that play good, sound good.
There are also plenty of affordable tube amps out there.
With a $1000 you could do pretty well.
Great post; I’d go with the guitar first; it has to be comfortable and feel good in my hand before anything else; I tell anyone who’ll listen that my number one axe is a Peavey Generation Series Tele with active pickups I got in the ‘80s; it has a humbucker at the brass bridge that you can split; it sounds like great recordings of vintage Teles; like old Stones records with the humbucker & single coil neck pickup….I’d put the quality & craftsmanship up against any PRS… and my main amp is a FIVE WATT Bugera 😎
So true that as soon as you sell a guitar or amp it immediately sounds better. I’ve had that weird moment of realisation on selling guitars of how much they had matured in the time I had them.
A ratio of prices would be helpful. I think if you only play at home 4:1 guitar price to amp price ratio (or higher) might make sense. If you're out playing live in small clubs, it's probably closer to 1:1 or 1:2 guitar price to amp price ratio, because the amp is probably more important then. At higher levels like David, when you can afford to use $10,000 guitar for gigs, then you're back to 4:1 ratio (unless you want a lot of different amps. But these days, an amp simulator or pedals can give most desired tones and effects.)

Years before i had my first amp, Estey era tube Magnatone.
Played thru stereos, Magnavox console or a head phone rig, record one side, guitar the other.
all said, Get an amp you'll keep (many have gone) but they can be replaced.
Find 'a perfectly good guitar' and you might keep it forever.
A good Amp will help with your sound and having an Amp large enough to fill a room that you can gig with helps too, but having a good guitar that draws you to practice like a good car begs you to take back road Sunday drives is worth every penny.
I have an Indonesian Squier that I got running good enough to play, I am only a few grand away from getting all the amps running proper, then I can start saving up for a Leslie and a couple echoes. 🎸
Friend of mine in college, on his first gig ever, with his new Death Metal band got a Roland Jazz Chorus as a backline amp AND his distortion pedal broke ... he still chugged through his power chords with a prisitne clean tone ... might have been the same place in Dublin!
