One year later, it looks like the current pre-order price for the starter pack is $399. No Li-Ion battery works 40 years later. It's the reason today's devices will never work as retro tech. We can still play on MSX, Commodore 64 or ZX Spectrum (released exactly 40 years earlier), but we won't be able to find battery replacement for this in 40 years! We might not be able to find battery replacement for Nintendo Switch in 40 years, even though it's a very well established console today. (Ok, let me bookmark this comment and I'll come back to check it in 2062 if I'm still alive).

Guys, we're just entering the market. And the price is very dependent on the volume of sales. If you manage to try large volumes, the price will fall. I wouldn't really call it a toy. All 2×2 are puzzles and some are toys and some are not (and this goes for all puzzles). For example, a dollar store cube is a toy, but the GAN 251 is not a toy. Now this cube has gone beyond that designation. This is a piece of modern technology.
@@Sqift because the GAN 251 M is $21.99. sure, we have toys that cost that much, but because it's a puzzle, I would say that's the starting price for conventional professional cubes (you can get cheaper ones, but this is the start). And this goes for all Rubik's based puzzles.
Really liking this, though I'd like to see a 3x3 eventually, and I'd also like the devkit to support Linux out of the box too, but the IDE they are pushing might work anyway. The hardware is seriously impressive. I think this is the first "smart" rubiks cube that isn't a convoluted mess or completely unnecessary. This actually improves on the "point" of the original rubiks cube by allowing for unique and new experiences with the puzzle. I love that they encourage taking apart the cube and even include the tools and accessories needed. I'll be keeping a close eye on the future of this tech.

It's very cool but it also makes me sad to think of how much e-waste all this smart products introduce. One phone every three years and one laptop every six per person already lead to a near unmanageable amount of e-waste and a huge energetic cost, and there is no current way around it but to cut it down. Smart products (and products which didn't use to have electronics like headphones) appear but their energetic cost and possibilities of recycling doesn't improve. Cubing used to be a quite harmless hobby in this regard, but now just by buying a couple smart cubes more waste has been created than by a lifetime of traditional cubing. And given how resolution, battery life, cube mechanism speed, miniaturization, etc improve people will of course not buy only one of these to use for decades. Of course our personal decisions are near irrelevant next to some billionaire that takes a helicopter daily for a trip that can be done by tram, or to companies which really don't push hard enough to reduce their CO2 footprint and to make products that last a lifetime (as it's against their interest), but well, they have some impact.
