  • The most complete and comprehensive video dedicated to the eight generation Lincoln Continental 1988-1994 (FN9).
Good day to my friends along the journey in automotive appreciation. I present to you a rather special story of what lead me to follow the 1990’s evolution in Lincoln. My impression of the 1990 Lincoln Continental is so memorable that I decided to detail several changes throughout the entire eighth generation; going forward I will refer this series as FN9.
The Ford FN9 Platform allowed Lincoln to exercise their most daring maneuvers during what looks to have been the peak of midsized luxury sedans. Within seven model years, the FN9 Lincoln sold 328 thousand vehicle. This is Lincoln's first Front-wheel drive vehicle in history.
The eighth generation Lincoln Continental was so successful that the mass appeal normalized its luxury status. This saturation into the High-end market made the Continental less exclusive and plummeted the resale value. To add insult to injury; frequent and widespread failure of the Adaptive air-ride suspension and blown head gaskets were the one-two punch for the original FN9 generation.
Today these cars are virtually wiped off the face of the earth. If mechanical problems didn't do them in, the Cash For Clunkers program surely sent them to their final destination. Whichever the case, all these years later I’m intrigued by the eighth generation Continental.

Cadillac loyalist here 👋. The ‘89 Continental stands as my very favorite Lincoln of all time. The magic was in the incredible ride the computerized air suspension delivered. It proved difficult to maintain over time, but it was the most technologically advanced system in the industry at the time, and Lincoln deserves praise for leading the way with this.

absolutely, level ride also kept the drag coefficiency in check even with a full tank of gas, luggage and total occupancy.

Had a 1991 Continental and absolutely loved the car. Too many repairs and maintenance concerns to keep it, but it was a fantastic ride and the styling still holds up today.

In 1989 my father bought one new for 127,000 old-fashioned Dutch guilders (about 50,000 dollars). My grandfather also bought one in 1992. My grandfather's had a dual exhaust. My god, my father abused his terribly. The head gasket blew out at 30,000 km. Every 10,000 km the brake pads and brake discs had to be replaced. The 6 cylinder engine had great difficulty keeping up with my father's pace. I once had the consumption meter show 1 to 1. Nevertheless, it drove fine. In 1995 my father started driving with my grandfather's. According to the vehicle registration register, that copy lasted in the Netherlands until 2017. By the way, my father's Lincoln was the first car I drove in 1992 after I had received my driver's license at the town hall 2 minutes earlier.

thanks for sharing your story and the family tradition of Continental ownership. i’m glad you would stay loyal to the brand even with the experience your granddad had with the car. i really appreciate you watching the video and contributing to the conversation. all these years later history has shown; the 3.8L V6 was notorious for head gaskets issues. also Ramon, what do you think about the 10th generation Continental?

These are beautiful cars. I currently have a 1994 Jewel Green Lincoln Continental Signature Series. She's far from mint, but I'm trying my best to restore her to her former glory.

This Lincoln looked like a long version of a ford Taurus the last year in 1987 was the best body style

Freddy, i too agree the 7th generation Fox-Platform was very stylish. However the 8th generation Continental was exploration where no Lincoln has gone before. Engineering and front-drive trans-axle made the 1988-1994 Continental roomy. It was the strongest selling version from years prior and no Continental sold more since. Do you have any other favorite Lincoln?

for you this turned out to “never meet your heroes” situation. in all fairness this was Lincoln’s first attempt at front-drive. by the time they got it perfect the world shifted to crossover’s. so Dan, what car do you have your eyes on now?

Crap car, 140 bhp is embarrassing, shocking in fact. 3/10. Nice video though! The one after, 1995-2002 was nice.

many improvements were indeed made to the following 9th generation Continental. for starters the intech V8 and a much more durable transmission. however, this video featuring the original front drive 8th gen was a huge sales success. not many examples remain today. i do really appreciate you watching and sharing your opinion. what’s your favorite all time Lincoln?
