- This Warner Brothers Pictures release, produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Kevin Reynolds, features approximately nine minutes of music from Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays' ECM album, As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls in the motion picture's score.
there is not a time that I haven't sobbed watching this film and this particular scene. pat metheny's music along with the atmosphere of the movie, the ending of such a beautiful and poetic story about friendship, growing up, parting ways with your friends.... it strikes a chord inside of me that I can't fully understand. i know it makes me look back on a life I haven't lived, it takes me into the future when I'll look back to my own youth and memories. this scene is one of my most sacred treasures. fandango is a movie I was introduced to by my dad, we share the same passions in music and movies. after I finish watching this film i get transported in another dimension, it's a feeling that last for days. truly a cinematic masterpiece. poetry is everywhere. I want to live a life that makes me feel in my heart like this story does.
Yes !!
You could not have describet it better ! Thank you !
Touches me in the same way at 56 that it did when I first saw it at 20. I also cry during this scene. Beautifully said.
Indeed. I am happy to know that others feel the same way about this film that I do and have for so many years. I actually had a love like this, have had friends come and go that changed my life, or whom I would not have had a life if it weren't for them being there for even a season, who's faces are as clear to me now as they were then. I never say 'good bye' to anyone; always 'see ya later, friend'. Now, my children are grown and going, and I pray that they live a life with everything in it so that they have something to look back on, and miss, and treasure; yeah. I treasure each and every moment of it; wouldn't trade it for pure gold.
Ditto, remembering the one that slipped through my fingers.
such an underrated movie. from a silly, hilarious road movie, it becomes so rife with emotions at the end. one of the most treasured DVDs in my collection.
Agree! This film is incredible and more people need to see it.
Great comment. Exactly.
Absolutely !
You said it man!!
Mine too. I love the parachute scene, as when I left school around 83/84 me and one of my school friends used to go parachuting at Langer Airport near Nottingham and it’s scary how accurate the scene is to how we also learned, and did our jumps. It’s so on my iPad so I can watch it anytime, sad aren’t I.
Saw this when I was 22, cried like a baby at the ending. Seen it twenty times since then, 53 now, still cry like a baby at the ending. "Have a nice life."
Most powerful scene in the movie. This scene and this song has stuck in my mind since I saw it 30 years ago. Thank you for your music...
Chuck Reed same here! I keep coming back to this same scene. It's beautiful, intense and how they dance together, as one and as if no-one else is there but them. Fantastic!
Absolutely HAUNTING, man. Gorgeous, scary, everything
Chuck me too this scene as stuck with me since I saw it back in 91.
Same on my side. I have never understood why but now I know. When I saw this movie in the eighties I was in love with a girl but she refused my love. Every now and then I came back to RUclips to watch it. Today, 30 years later, life brought us together and we are a couple.... I recently showed her this scene of the movie and she was moved, just like me
Stefan De Boeck happy for you 👍🏾
In 2002 I was engaged to a girl and we loved this movie so much we took dance lessons to learn this dance so we could dance it at our wedding . I never go to dance that dance with her ,, but it has a whole new meaning to me now when my son was a little boy I would spin him around and teach him dancing and to this day when I say to him "Hey how about a fandango" he smiles and always says i love that song dad. just a great film with great music.
This song remind me of my 1st true love and it was one of the most powerful and underrated movies ever.
How beautiful!
Oh my gosh. My eyes welled up reading about you & your son.
Amazing! And yes, Fandango its a great film with a fantastic soundtrack!
I love UR story and and subsequent son story ,How about Fandango ? Im sure U pause often, very deep inside , when Fandango kicks in "symbolically" .... cause that scene , beauty of friendship , love and music suddenly give its own powerful gut feeling.
I watched this film in an empty theater in Burlington, Vermont in 1985. I watched this scene and started crying. At 23 years old, I wept for what I knew was my fading youth... This is a beautiful movie.
❤ your words are mine.
It's amazing how the screenwriter, director and actors worked together to tell an epic of love found, love lost and love rediscovered in another place -- without saying a word. The way she shook her head, then kissed him on the cheek... *My* heart hurts.
Costner's look at the end ... chills every time. Amazing film and soundtrack.
I know that look
I’ve been to these places. Back in 2015
@@narrowboatphotography2615 what the Mr.brooks look 👀 ...nah I got emotional once I realize what was going on 😮😢
YES
Uno dei miei film preferiti, queste scene finali sono incredibili e indelebili complice anche la musica di Pat Metheny, roba da antologia del cinema, wow!
One of the most touching scenes I've ever seen and it wouldn't be so without Pat's music.
picardbs I’m a huge Pat Metheny fan plus i love this movie. It’s wonderful
Yes, after I saw the movie I had to find the soundtrack. Masterpiece
Lost youth...lost friendship...infinite saddnes.Good reason to cry
This scene is heart wrenching for anyone who's ever loved and lost.
+Aaron McCall Agreed.
+Aaron McCall true words
TRue!!
Yeah.
That will be most of the human race then...
This scene was so bittersweet and beautiful, especially the final kiss. This was the perfect song for this moment.
Just heard on this day, Monday, February 10th, Lyle Mays passed away at 66 years of age due to illness. We will no longer hear new works from this deeply talented artist. Let's cherish what he and Pat Metheny accomplished together, miles and miles of beautiful music.
Thank you for saying that. I saw PMG three times with Lyle. I am still blown away by this song.
😢
Still one of the most underrated films ever. Always a go to film for me that always puts a smile on my face and a slight tear in my eyes. Brings back memories of youth gone by. Amazing soundtrack ❤
Amen
Magical, It is like a dream.
When I think of this movie I always go back directly to this great scene.
I loved this scene 35 years ago, and still love it.
Wasn’t the biggest fan of this movie overall but this scene is one of my favorites from any movie ever made. This and the last scene where he’s sitting alone while “Can’t Find my Way Home” is playing. Never tire of those scenes. Thanks for the great music.
Watching this movie again tonight for probably the 30th time. Never gets old and always gets to me. Have never understood why it did not have more success. Anyone I have begged or paid to watch it ends up loving it.
And I got emotional AGAIN watching the final scene
How could Steven Spielberg disown this film? It was magical!
A mistake for sure.
@@joelhoulette3244 you mean the acclaimed director of 1941 and Always? South Park joke.
@@jamesfields2916 I like both.
@@j.b.9260 Both considered the weakest Spielberg films. The joke being out of all the Spielberg films these were the two named. I enjoyed 1941.
@@jamesfields2916 It's a pretty silly swipe at Spielberg. You may as well write "Martin Scorsese, the acclaimed director of New York, New York and The Color of Money".
One of the best movies of all time.
Celebration of youth, friendship, adventure, love. The best life has to offer us.
I could not agree more . I love every moment of this film.
Tera Agent 88 unknown film, but I agree.
No one will ever be so young.
Never
@@paolaraineri7130 Hai ragione Paola...
The music is such a great match for the scene, which is rife with symbolism: Amis plays Costner's ex-girlfriend who is now marrying instead his best friend. The newly-married couple's first dance is a clumsy affair which is then followed by Costner and Amis's flawless "fandango" performance. They clearly were meant to be together...but it's just not going to happen. It is this poignant moment of realization and regret that fuels so many fans' love for this movie. On a side note, Reynolds' overhead shot at 4:26 is magic and is one of my favorites ever.
Great movie, very well acted, funny and romantic at the same time. I saw it back in 1991 and was struck by it, I immediately bought the VHS then, later on, the DVD. It touches all the aspects of life (love, friendship, youth) and how quickly you can loose all of them. Love the ending, very touching and sad, each one goes separate ways but it's the way it goes in life and it's fair the way it is...that's why this movie is a great movie.
God this movie and this song work so well … amazing. It’s for You … is my favorite song … of all time ….as it somehow captures everyone’s past whether it’s college, a past love, a great memory, a bad memory, the birth of a baby, a death of a parent, great friend …. somehow it grinds your heart to remember all that is … and …. was great at one point in your life. And when they dance …. when I close my eyes …. I seem to remember my life … it unwinds my brain… the good and bad…. priceless as life is up and down. Great song, movie.
+Michael Morgan Yes, it is an amazing thing. Very well said.
+Stimulator7 Yes me too..
Well said ..me too
veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy well said!
U are.sooo right !
Puts a lump in your throat and a longing in your heart...ahhhh the memories!
I saw this movie with my girlfriend who later became a short lived fiance', when it came out in 1985 when I was a Junior in college. She passed away many years ago and at my old age I still remember how I felt when I first saw the movie and listened to the soundtrack.. Bitter sweet to say the least.
Beautiful comments, from beautiful people, sharing the same beautiful views. God bless all
God bless you ❤️
God bless you awesome soul!
Probably the most positive, benign and happy comment section ever on RUclips! If only they would all be like this one...
Sacrifice for a friend and loss of love from a sweetheart all in one movement. Plus the music. It makes for a lasting, haunting memory.
That movie has always stuck with me... Especially that scene. The music, dance & that final sense of loss . . . Didn't suspect Pat Metheny was responsible for the tunes until just now . . . Nicely done Mr M . . .
Always loved this scene with the beautifully choreographed dancing and Pat Metheny's beautiful musical score.
One of the ULTIMATE films and scenes of All times. Love love love some Fandango!!
This movie will go down as one the best movies ever made. It really is underrated and unknown. Tarantino said he thinks it is the best debut of a director in the history of cinema and he watched it 4 times in the theater.
Chad Cooper I agree. It's wistful. Costner's last salute at the end is heartwrenching. Beautiful, underrated film.
Absolutely agree!
Agreed .... I saw this movie for the first time around 1985 (on cable tv I think) ... I was just a Sophomore in high school at the time, but damn if this movie didn't resonate with me on a profound level! I watched it about a dozen times within the first couple of years, and many times since. One of my all time favorite films
@@bonnafide2606I agree, a memorable start to his acting career.
Orson Wells was a rookie when he made Citizen Kane, and as much as I like Fandango, it's not beating Citizen Kane.
The fandango part, the visuals and the music-especially the music-is, for me, breathtaking...
Every now and then, I play this scene to feel the intensity it creates; the way everyone fades away when they take to the floor, the look in their eyes upon each other, the way their hands unknowingly caress each other, the way they move so fluidly together...... I am now going to imagine I am dancing that dance with Kevin Cosner but I won't be leaving his arms any time soon!
Nice thoughts of this, wish i was his character, but I can’t dance. Loved this movie since I saw it in ‘86 . Hope you’re well. Hope people keep enjoying it ...
My beautiful hometown of San Elizario, Texas
Levi L. Pavia oh man, I'm from San Eli too.
Lucky gentleman
Alec McGhee yes I am ! Thanks Alec
Always wondered where this was, thanks!
I have to go there someday, definite.
I have been watching this movie for over 30 years now. I love it.
The film of my youth, the film of everyone's youth...
WoW and Holy Crap Man. I thought for years I was the only one who fealt the way everyone who has posted before me feels.. I'm now 46. I've found the love of my life but the only way that dream will ever come true is by the Grace of GOD. Since her name is Grace and my Daughter's name is Hope I have Faith GOD will finally bless me with that Soulful Love. And as soon as we can get some time to chill and be alone together, we are watching this movie together. It molded my life. I ended up just like Truman for a while. lol. College, war, buddies, girls, wild times, crazy nights, beer drinking, roughin' it, breaking the law in a day when laws had some leeway. A better day. A dream of yesterday and today. If you've never seen it put it on your movie bucket list. Thank you Pat & Lyle. 5-13-16
A very under-rated move...
Great story line...
Pat Methney's music 🎶 just adds to the ride..
BROVO!!
ALOHA KIMO
Super cool flick. I have watched this about 100 times and always , always love it. Is she stunning or what.
Mike 2330: a certifiable heartbreaker she is... but not in a bad way.
Among the most underrated movies ever.
My generation, as we faced the likelihood of going to war. Among films about friendship, love and facing an uncertain future this is one I love the most. A stroke of genius to include Metheny's music.
tp beal: from S. 12th or 14th Street?
The graveyard rocket fight was so layered.
This song makes my heart feel things. It has for a very long time. I'm smiling.
I tell people this is a happy song with sadness in it. Not sure how else to describe it. It fits this movie so well.
A beautiful childhood friend of mine, who recently passed, adored this movie and this music-and, why not?☮️❤️🙏🏽
It brings that age straight back to me so vividly. As if I never left. Until I look in the mirror and now see an old man. Thank you for this video. I love this movie.
And this album is the best. Please listen to the real unedited version. One of my favorite songs to play guitar to and see if I can do it exactly like Pat.
Timeless song, perfectly realized in this classic movie scene, about the girl who got away. Pat Metheny’s pastoral Americana and musical landscapes are genius.
Absolutely correct !
The perfect combination of excellent movie editing and music together.the pure emotions in this scene is unparalleled.
Been listening to Pat Metheny Group since 1980 and never thought of anyone dancing to his music - this is beyond perfect. Great movie that I just discovered a couple months ago.
I grew up watching this movie. My dad personally favored this movie since he was a college student. This scene is my ultimate favorite part of the film, beause I think this has alot of beauty and meaning to it. My dad even commented that he wanted this song to play at my own wedding- as soon as he leads me down the ailse. I really agreed it was such a good song. I think I'll add it to my playlist as soon as I get married-someday:>
So, have you gotten married?
@@sergiosaunier 😜
@@nemozack3767 It’s a fair question, as she stirred my curiosity with her beautiful story! Although, being married for 25 years, I don’t know if the answer will bring me joy or sadness…
@@sergiosaunier ahahaha very ironic end... 🤣
@@sergiosaunier Anyway you made curios too.
At that time, all of us left the cinema hall, with damm wet eyes.
This movie, together with Pat’s music score, were one of the finest testaments to our generation.
I am 55 today and I still feel a bit of Gardner. 🇺🇸🎸🍷❤️
To Gardner Barnes!!
I’m 53 and I’ll never forget that feeling. ❤
Any movie that starts with Badge and ends with Can't Find My Way Home is going to be fantastic.
when I watched this movie for the first time during the 80s, I couldn't know that, since then, i would always carry with me the emotions of these scenes for all my life
I was too late to watch this GEM, and I regret. No matter how hard I tried controlling my tears, it rolled out during the climax. What a classic!! Love this timeless masterpiece!!
my favorite scene from one of my favorite movies of all time. We played this song at our wedding.
Great song. Great scene. And when he leans in to kiss her....hurts every time.
Suzy Amis' expressions were amazing. So much said without saying a word.
JUST PASSING THIS ALONG: The Opening Title Card to the Kevin Reynolds film 'FANDANGO' (1985) reads:
"Austin, Texas. May 15, 1971."
Thus making that 45 years ago TODAY 'The Groovers' went out to dig up Dom and to re-live the greatest chapter in Groover History.
This film, 'FANDANGO' -- changed my life ... so ... if I may:
"Here's to us, by God-!
To us, and that...
... and privileges of youth.
Here's to us and what we were.
And what we'll be."
DOM LIVES-!

Lost her in 1993...married her in 2022. It was torture not being with her for all of those years. I won't forget the longing, the reminiscing, and the feelings of gratitude when we embraced again after nearly three decades. I'm so happy now. I'll never take it for granted. As so many of you have commented, this song evokes thoughts and feelings of lovers and friends lost or estranged through time and distance or other situations. Reach out to a friend, even if its been years. It does a soul good.
I first saw this on pirated cable in my dorm in 1986. It has remained my favorite movie ever since. This scene is perfection. Me and my buddy will randomly text each other quotes from the movie (I like the way it's shaped, DOM's not in Mexico son, we could see the donkey lady, etc) we know it by heart. I've lost two dvd's of it that I loaned out, probably not loaning it out again!
Good flick and the the graveyard score and the wedding dance genius.
The best frame of the movie history. Music, actors, poetic and idillic mood....always crying to watch our lives goes...
I remember seeing this film back in the 80's . This film made me a Pat M fan instantly which led me to many happy music moments. . Watching it on a small B&W TV and this film still to this days is remembered like I saw it yesterday. So many iconic moments in this film and this music indeed as you say, made this scene unforgettable. So prefect an edit. Took me years (no internet) to find the song. Different times. A true coming of age film of my time. Perhaps yours as well :-)
Still one of my favorite movies ever. Metheny and the rest of the soundtrack, icing on cake that I never want to finish.
If you've ever taken a long distance road trip with your college pals, this movie. Fandango, It's For You. A great-great film.
Greatest road trip movie ever made, yet by many goes unseen.
Thank you so much Lyle for your contribution to the music industry. Your talents along with Jaco Pastorius will not go unnoticed.
I'm sure Pat and the gang will have similar words to express how grateful and wonderful it has been to be one of Jazz fusion's shining light to remind listeners how music never dies.
As a music fan first and anime fan second, wherever you are:
Bless you!
Thank you, Lyle Mays! 🍁🍂⚘🌷
Outstanding, underrated movie made great by an incredible soundtrack, but Pat Metheny's tunes make it soar. Thank you.
Pat and Lyle i love this movie but the ending was something else the music just blend right in i still get chills just listening and i was just a kid loving this song wow! and the 🎥
The "goodbye friend, have a nice life" always gets my throat 30 something years later.
Have this on DVD yet not watched for a while.
One of my favorite movies. This music will live forever Pat Metheny is a musical genius
We had this going during my mom's memorial service. She LOVED this movie. All her kids loved it too... we miss her. We still have Fandango!
If there’s one composition from PM that’s bittersweet, beautiful, heartfelt & brings tear to my eyes, It’s For You is definitely that jam. Great movie, great soundtrack & that ending is pure gold!!!
Absolutely Beautiful Scene in this movie.. Thank You for posting this
I cant add much more than has been already said, except it is one of the most powerful movies of its kind ever made, inspirational cast and performances, genius music and it just captures the transition of life from youth to adulthood and all its trials and tribulations, loves and losses and just sticks with you forever. Lost count of how often we play this, my two sons loved it, and at the same time has some hilarious scenes. Kevin Costner's best ever movie, without a doubt, really, he just hits all the buttons, and it never ages. Wonderful.
This movie was so underated..it brings back so many powerful emotional memories..thank you
An incredibly underrated movie. The combination of a Spielberg movie with Metheny compositions is simply a fusion of two art forms composed and performed at their peak of perfection.
I saw this movie back in the 80s . Didn't think much about the underlying message it was trying to convey to me . Its 2024 , I'm 68 . Now I get it....
Probably my favorite movie. Used to watch every year on my birthday. Great scene.
When I think of this film, I think of Pat Metheny and this song first. Iconic!
My condolences to you, dear, dear, dear one. Thank you for sharing Lyle with the world.
I never tire watching this. So beautiful.
In my top 3 movies of all time. This scene is so melancholy and captured perfectly with perfect music!
I hadn't seen that Lyle Mays had passed away until I came back to this video. He was the sound of my late teens along with Pat Matheny. I don't know anyone else who sounds like him or can put me in a mental space in the way his sound does along side Pats. God bless.
This movie has marked my life. Since the first time I saw it, back in 1985 ❤
I have the exact same feelings 38 years later. I can never get this movie, message and fondness out of my head and heart..
I am brimming over with love just seeing this wonderful clip & the most amazing piece of music ever. Thank you. X
If ever there was a poignant moment in a film, beyond a doubt THIS IS IT. Bittersweet, the realisation... 😔
I drove across Texas with 2 friends from college, then down into Mexico. This film just resonates with me and the score is soundtrack is excellent.
One of my favorite movies I saw it back in 1986. The music was brilliant and one of the best lines in the
movie was that hair raising moment when someone says........ " How are we gonna stop"
the best film of the 80's!
This is one of my favorite dance scenes in all of film. What a massively underrated movie this was.
大好きな映画の大好きだけど切ないシーン。パットメセニーの音楽が懐かしくもあり、切なさが増します。
GOD I love this scene .
James Butera Me too. I must have played this beautiful scene hundreds of times over the years since I first saw it. The way they dance so close is so intense.
I lost track to how many times I've watched this movie. And I swear each time I watch it, it's like the first time.
If I were to count the times I've going back watching this sequence it would easily been in the hundreds. Love pours out from every second of it. Thanks for posting.
What a brilliant merge of two fantastic artists. What a waste that they’re gone RIP W&G ❤️❤️❤️
1985 I was 13 yrs old. Everyone watched "Breakfast Club" I watched Fandango
This here film and soundtrack does America proud and ranks high up and like folks write in the commentary, this is a severely underrated , emotional masterpiece that covers so many colors of friendship, humor, sacrifice, coming of age, and love!
This is a fantastic movie man, very underrated and plus one of the most beautiful songs i ever heard. Thank you Pat and Lyle
This wonderful song always brings tears to my eyes
Nice touch using the perfect 70's reaction that we all had because of a common trick to play on your friends: if someone behind you taps you on your right shoulder, you turn around to your left.
Love and friendship!… this film is life.
Gem 💎 of a movie not seen it in years, and all those memories came flooding back. Magic
I love everything about this end scene it's perfect in everyway!! Always takes me back to my childhood and always makes me 😃 😊 ❤
Amazing how the score is instantly recognisable as Pat; really sounds like the early Pat Metheny Group (especially The Search)!
