- EPISODE 12
Getting stuck into the fitting of the fashion timber! ( The timber that creates the angle between counter stern and transome )
Now i've got the timber glued together and the inside scribed and shaped to fit the ferro cement counter, its time to start dry fitting.
Also its time to make a start on the coach roof. Beginning with removing the rest of the existing timbers to make way for the next steps.

hats off to you Finn for working in such demoralizing conditions!
Finntastic! :)
FINN WEEE NEED MORE SUPPORRTTT..EVERYONE SHARE THE CHANNEL. TALLY HO IS BUILDING THIS COMMUNITY OF YOUNG BOAT BUILDERS WE NEED 2 SUPPORT THEM NO MATTER THEIR LEVEL OF SKILL/PROJECT
now, this has started to be interesting. I like the style in these vids. Finn is a born movie star and the project is most interesting.
Hi Finn. 40 years ago I sailed a ferro Colin Archer around S.E Asia, so am very keen on watching your progress.
I think it would be interesting to viewers to see a bit of Smack history and a walk around of the hull shape (bow , turn, keel, rudder etc).. All we have really seen recently is the stern. All the best from Japan. gary
After watching you and others I've decided at 72 not to restore a boat it's more fun watching others struggle, dont get me wrong I love watching you and Leo, Louis, Steve Alix and Bob and anyone who loves boats will know all who I've mentioned It's a young mans game. Keep on doing your stuff 👍
Great to see more progress. Keep going Finn. Thanks for sharing
Nice one mate
Now I remember where I’ve seen you from you were working on tally ho well good to see you starting your own project
Every vid is better than the previous one Finn, You look far more comfortable and natural in front of the camera now and you keep the talking to a minimum ( a picture's worth a thousand words ) and show us the actual work which is what's interesting. Great stuff ,looking forward to the next one.
NICE ONE
Well done Finn. No matter how small each step, you'll get there in the end. As for working in 2 degrees, Jeez nearly Summer :-)
That kinda resilience is impressive, to say the least.
Keep at it Finn, you are very talented, keep the faith man
Fun to watch !
Over a thousand likes and ZERO dislikes!! That’s awesome!! And 25 minutes long?!?! LOVE IT! Keep going brother. I’m here for every second of every episode. Bravo to you for working when it’s sooo cold. It has to be very uncomfortable. Love it man. Can’t wait to see the next video! Fantastic!!
Thanks for the kind words Dwayne, ahhh it’s not too bad, soon warm up after a couple trips up and down the ladders 😉
Spring is right around the corner....
New 🇨🇦 viewer. Quite a project.
Awesome, Finn is back for 2021! MORE MORE
Good work Finn
Good to see a fellow rock boat builder making some good progress, not so many of us 'finished' our boats well enough to go sailing. I built a Herreshoff Marco Polo (55', three mast schooner) back in the 70's and was lucky enough to sail a bit more than 50K miles before I moved back ashore. Best sail ever? A week in the Westerlies, blowing about 40kts in the Gulf of Alaska....making just short of 200miles a day. Double handed, hand steering etc, everything up but the mizzen (nerve failed at sundown the first day of the good wind, but the boat was handling it fine.) -Veteran '66-68 (P.S. Anybody know where Valkyrie is at the moment? )
Great to hear from you! And awesome that you built your own and made some memorable memories of your adventures! Really great to hear. Sounds like a pretty awesome set up. I am dreaming of the day we are on our way under full sail!
Great work, Finn!
Good work
Good work. Nice editing. The world needs more Finn.
Enjoyed. Thanks for posting 👍
Finn, you do a fantastic job with your videos and content. I want to encourage you to post more frequently. Your channel is one of my favorites!!!
If I had more time I would love to be able to work in the bit more and produce more videos for you all. But it just isn’t viable at the moment, hopefully as time goes on it will become easier to fit more in.
Great job Finn. Nice to see the boat coming along!.
Well done Finn - keep it up!
Good to see you on the tools. Keep it up.
Great work Finn. Well done.
Nights are getting shorter! Good work!
Keep on going Finn, it isn’t the speed that covers the distance👍🏻👍🏻
Sometimes it’s a pry bar, sometimes it’s a chisel and sometimes it’s just a screwdriver. Nice work. Cheers
Finn! 😊 Always happy to see you have uploaded a new video!
Great video Finn, thanks. Your Dad is a star, please say hi from another Dad. Good luck. Looking forward to seeing more.
Great to hear from you Finn, enjoyed the catch up, power to your elbow my friend 💪
Progress is progress stay positive and it will be so rewarding in the end!!! Thanks for sharing 👍👍
You are doing awesome!!! just keep on keeping on!
String, wood, ingenuity and determination. That's what makes this so amazing to me...and you managed all that only showing us a few glimpses of builders bum 😁🧡
Great vid mate ! looking good, cheers from South Australia
Damn your good.
Nice video. Thank you so much for wearing proper PPE some of the time. There are so many vloggers that don't bother with any. Good to see your back on it.
Gotta look after what’s valuable aye pat!! Hope you and bonnie are well! How the boat?
I am not familiar with cement boats, had to Google it to learn some of the history. Really enjoying watching your journey, keep up the good work. The Eyes of Texas are upon you!
Can't wait to see you sailing along side Leo and the Tally Ho. Keep up the good work.
Great to have another installment. With every video I'm amazed by your self discipline and commitment to the project. It absolutely will pay off in the end. Keep at it! 👍👏
Good thing the boat has been on the hard, otherwise you'd have have a ton of rought and corrosion. Can't wait for each video Finn, you got quite a lot done this time.
Very good progress Finn. Great video. Thank you!
It’s coming along - keep at it !!!!!
Keep it up bud!
Marvelous episode Finn. Thank you. Good progress. Looking forward to number 13 as and when it arrives.
Outstanding!
Hiya Finn

@Finn, another great video!! ;) well done content, and I want to add a compliment on the selection of the music, it really adds to the watching.
Happy New year to you Finn, hope this year is good to you!
Happy New Year Finn. Keep em coming👍
Great job! Healthy New Year!
Great job sir! Enjoying seeing your progress.
Happy New Year Finn and its good to see you making progress. Looking forward to seeing the project on the water :-)
Well done Finn, the videos are getting better and better each time. I love how you knew nothing about sailing or boats before tally hoe and it’s given you a passion and a dream and you have plunged your self straight in the deep end. Keep the videos coming !!
I know very little about boats but watching this channel i know a lot more. Q. Why Pine on the fashion piece? I assumed that it would be something stronger like Oak.
Well done Finn. Hopefully the workshop will be warmer soon!
You make my day Finn Great Work
Great job, Finn! Hey, that's how one eats an elephant -- one bite at a time. Good luck and keep up the excellent work!
Subbed, looking forward to more!
Followed you over here from Leo's channel, been watching since you started it up. Obviously different, but really enjoying watching you work on your own boat. For myself, do what you have to do, enjoy the build and enjoy the rest of your work and life, I'll wait for videos to come out, no hurry. Glad you're sharing the journey.
I was watching you use the oscillating tool and wondered what you would do if it wasn't around. They are a great tool to use on those impossible cuts. Thanks for the update.
I would have to find another way to make the awkward cuts, but thankful for some modern tools making life that little bit easier 😉
These pieces never go out of fashion, do they..
Looking good. Keep it at your pace, no need to stress yourself for the sake of content.
I have absolutely no idea of what you’re doing, but I’m fascinated nontheless. Great music, btw!
try and build an overhead crane or a large a frame hoist
Some boards are still good yeah? Dont replace watss stillngood. But good work bro. Its going to be a sweet ship.
Finn, there is a real appetite for your content. Go for it. The initial response might be slow but your project is a good one. Keep going!
Thank you David, that is very kind of you. I’ll do my best 👍
Keep them saws singing!
Have you thought about lifting the cabin a bit for standing headroom?
Yes, working a full-time job does eat into personal project hours. But your commute is just a short walk! Fighting traffic for 45 mins to get home to my projects zapped me for another half hour to chill after the ordeal. Hated that. Retired now, but sometimes have to save for 2-3 months to buy next batch of stuff for whatever. Available time has replaced available funds-- so my projects still take forever! LOL...
Yess the commute it pretty great! Just wish there was more time in the day! Time is flying by faster than ever, especially with everything that’s going on in the world at the moment.
as Duca from Odd Life Crafting says, Baby Steps!
What you been doing today pete...?
Great stuff Fin, thanks for your time. Have heard that ferro cement gets more durable with age but what are the modes of failure if it does and what do the repairs involve.
Loving it keep going.
Will
Concrete repair is surprisingly easy
Aye, + 2°C in a raw and moist environment isn't such fun for the work moral. Here it's -24°C outside and… well, not very fun either. Your energy is warming the mode for me ☝️
Where you have epoxy covered screws try a small sand shot blaster 1/4 tube i use this method in the bodyshop
Tips from a shipwright explains how to create a nifty tool to chisel it out in one of his vids. Might be worth checking out.
Good video dude! Be interesting if you could describe why you use the different saws for each application. As a novice myself I’m all ears.
Noted 👍
Hey Finn. Nice to see a new video from you again. Been following you for a while now. Why do you want to use pine for the transom? Normally harder wood is used on boats. Im not a boatbuilder, just a sailor. So this is just a question, not criticism. Love to hear your answer :-)
2 degrees? F or C? Nah doesn't matter. I'd still be in bed with the covers up to my neck! All the best from Florida USA.
2 degrees Celsius, I would also be tucked up in bed fully wrapped if it was 2 degrees Fahrenheit 🤣🤣
"I'm sure as time goes on, things will get a lot easier .."
There are a dozen Boat Renovation RUclips videos that dunk that doughnut :-)
The tarp you have over the boat won't be helping the moisture content.
I assume it's there because the roof leaks?
You could string a rope above the boat and throw the tarps over that, like a washing line.
That way there's some airflow under the tarp, which should help with drying everything out.
It was just a quick solution to condensation dripping all over the boat, I’ve now done exactly that 👍
Looking good Finn, does Leo every call you up after watching your videos and tell you you're doing it wrong? : )
Hi Finn, good to see another video updating progress. Just about to start working on a new project myself, a plastic classic nearly 60 years old. Any tips on finding shed space in the SE?
You just gotta hunt for space, it’s not easy to find, getting out there and looking around and word of mouth in the best way I’ve found. Understandably pretty tricky in the current situation.
@@knotfinnishedyet9170 will keep looking , but might have to build temporary shed either in the yard or a nearby farm
By Finn just found your site Keep it up about the boat name here's one the would turn there head's ryu it's Dragon in Japanese just three powerful letters to keep them guessing.
I'd make this an offshore drinking platform.
Finn, I noticed that as you were moving around the cabin, that you would have been banging your head on deck beams (had they been there). Perhaps you could add a few inches to the cabin sides to give more headroom for yourself inside ? It could be that you appear taller because of hat and hair ?
Hi mark, haha yes the hair and hat may add an inch or two! I was able to walk around under the cabin top missing the roof beams my a few mm, but yes I do plan the increase the height a couple of inches to allow that bit more space.
Love your explanations as to why you are doing things. Not sure why you took the house sides off? Did I miss that in a previous video? Didn't look to bad from here in Birmingham ( apart from that bit of rot near the hatch)
Thanks man, it’s not easy. Am working on that part 😉 the cabin top came off due to a number of reasons.
Firstly, there was a substantial amount of defects in the timber, ( previously shown and discussed in another video ) rot and nasty splits either side of the companion way, the port side can side was full of wood worm holes and a couple areas of rot around the portholes.
I decided to remove the whole lot and rebuild so I can give myself a little more head room in the galley and saloon.
Gonna rebuild the house top a little higher? May be + 25mm at the side and +40-50mm in the middle, I'm sure you'd appreciate the headroom :-)
That’s the plan 👍
KnottFINNishedyet but will be one day - keep the faith :-)
⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
Great work Finn, wouldn't it be best to use galvanized bolts?
Those might have been temporary bolts as Finn probably knew he'd have to remove it again. What type of bolts will you use to put it on permanently?
Hope you're making that cabin roof higher. It would shit me to tears cracking my head on those beams all day long.
Love your work btw.
Man! Every step of the way a struggle to fight with that composite, (cement? you say? ) I think I'd like to play with some of that, could you explain what are the components to that cement compound is? I'd never heard of it...thanks.
Sorry, just got a-hold of episode two, I'll get back with you once I've investigated this stuff!
Good video Fin but can I add a little bit of constructive criticism?.. I'm going to 😁
Can you explain what you are doing more frequently please?.
Noted, and yes I will make more effort to explain why and how I’m going things 👍 thank you for the constructive criticism 😉
Are you going to rais thoose cab side?
I am indeed
