    People always ask what’s the pedal you could not live without. Mine is reverb . The style in which I play doesn’t sound great dry. Don’t use too much gain unless I want to play lead and I set my odr1 on the edge of breakup if the amp I’m playing doesn’t already break up a little. So to me the core of my tone is my reverb stacked with the amp reverb. Add chorus if I want a little different clean sound.

  • @waynegram8907
    @waynegram8907 2 года назад

    Surf music used the fender reverb tank which most people overlook that there is a tube output buffer stage so the spring reverb has an additional tube output buffer stage that is driving the fender amplifier. Also what is overlooked is the fender reverb tank has a tube preamp stage so you're pretty much modifying your fender amplifier to have an additional 12ax7 preamp driver tube driving the front end of your fender amplifier. The spring reverb is just one part of the puzzle, try to use a tube output buffer pedal placed after the DSP spring reverb. When the surf guitarist would turn OFF the fender reverb tank the signal still went through the preamp driver and output buffer stage which drives the fender amplifier differently which is very overlooked as how to get the surf clean tones because the surf clean tones wasn't plugging your guitars output impedance direct into the amplifiers input jack. The fenders reverb tank would change and alter the guitar output impedance driving the amplifier input impedance differently. Also Phil Spector would use 3 different types of echo chambers that were underground on Gold Star studios and other studios in hollywood which the reverb chambers went into the console buss in parallel. This is also overlooked that the consoles send and return buss circuit was driving the reverb tank chambers so you would need a rack mount studio quality send and return circuit to drive your DSP digital reverb. Most producers would not use the AD/DA converters in guitar pedals or in rack mount digital reverbs which they would use high quality studio AD/DA converters to bypass that ones in the unit since they didn't sound that good. This subjects would be nice to make a video lesson about because they are overlooked with using reverb pedals and reverb rack units

Collider is not nearly as editable as either the Nemesis or Ventris but I like the simplicity of setup. I get where I want to go very quickly. The True Spring is wonderful. I've used a Strymon Big Sky for years, never really thrilled with its tone or menu navigation. Time for a change. Your previous Hardwire RV-7 video really helped lock down parameters that matter to me (studio-grade tones, ease of use, minimal clutter from unwanted features). Was surprised to see a different recommendation so quickly... OCD mandated I watch for "context".
    I like Source Audio and their EQ2 pedal is a mainstay on my board. The Ventris sounds really good -> but to my ears not better than the RV-7. This is where the "context" of my question comes in play. I surmise this video was made to offer a worthy alternative for those who consider missing features like presets and MIDI a deal-breaker. My question is, "If the comparison was limited strictly to tonal quality, do you consider the Ventris superior to an RV-7"?
    I know my comment is already getting long... but I'm adding a description of my use case, as it might be helpful for others wrestling with similar questions. I rarely play live anymore, so my gear preferences are tied almost entirely to tonal quality for recording/production applications. I often record guitar tracks fairly dry and add reverb/delay during the mixing stage (7th Heaven, Lexicon 224, AA Silver/Lemon, etc.). However, there are times when I need to apply time-based effects during tracking to get the feel right (usually Delay Llama and Multivox MX-201). If I'm going to apply reverb on a track recorded with delay/echo, I've found it works best to include in the initial chain for dialing in the interplay of these 2 effects... instead of adding a plugin during mixing.

    • @matthewmcclure3181
      @matthewmcclure3181 7 месяцев назад

      Update. Based on my affinity for Source Audio (and your recommendation) I seriously considered the Ventris. In the end I concluded it's a substantially better version of a Big Sky, so not what I targeting. The other contender was the Dr. Scientist Atmosphere, and it finished a very close 2nd (how close 2nd? I ended buying one of these too). In the end, I pulled the trigger on a Hardwire RV-7, and long story short it's exactly what I was seeking. In my opinion it sounds better and is more straight forward than my Strymon Big Sky.
      Since I was targeting a front-end reverb strictly for recording, I didn't really need the Big Sky features that were more conducive for playing live (mentioning this because for live applications the Big Sky or Ventris might be a better option for some people). I'd place the Dr. Scientist Atmosphere somewhere between RV-7 and Big Sky. Plenty of features useful for playing live, and tones nearly on par with RV-7. I highly recommend both RV-7 and Atmosphere.

    The ventris is really awesome, except the product graphics. The legibility is extremely poor because of the low brightness contrast of the white font on the brushed grey anodized aluminum. I don't know how they've could have missed this. I really love its sounds, features, interfacing options and huge amount of tweakability, but this is so annoying that I honestly thought about repainting the case and relabelling it somehow. Just my oppinion of course, but I thought it's worth to point and out, and it's actually noticeable in some shots in your video.

    Ive been searching my entire life for that decent reverb that is not overbearing, yet has that spark in tone. I've had many of them over the years. I was going to get this pedal since I have its brother, the delay Nemesis. I like the delay, but it's its own thing too as far as delay, so I carry a second delay BOSS DD3 on my board for light delays and use the Nemesis for heavier delay effects that are more, should I say, modern? I also use sometimes both delays at once, which I found out can be AMAZING! So I ended up with the Hall of Fame II pedal. I like it for a light reverb, but for some reason it's still not what I am looking for. Now I am going to have to shell out more money and just get this one. I mean, at worst it will end up in my dust pile of pedals.

    I remember being really hyped when the Ventris was released, but also a bit let down when I tried it.I think the room and spring algos are superb and plate is ok, but I was disappointed with the hall and this demo hasn’t changed that view. A real lexicon has the ability to make the reverb part of the overall sound. Like the Big sky, the H9 and the hall algo here the guitar sits on top of the reverb. Of the available pedals I’ve only heard Meris Mercury 7 and Chase Bliss 1978 be able to do that Lexicon thing properly. This is why I still sometimes use old rack units for recording as well as convolution reverbs,though I do use Empress and Eventide for live work. I do still wish though that someone would put some of the Valhalla algos into a pedal.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  2 года назад +1

      Sounds like we really hear things differently. Having owned many Lexicon units, and still having a few here for Reverb and Delay, I find it's much closer to the classic guitar reverbs of the 80's and 90's than those you mentioned.

  • @josephtardio1086
    @josephtardio1086 2 года назад +1

    Mason,
    I remember you once saying that the DD-500 is the best digital delay ever. Considering this statement, would you recommend someone gets a DD-500 & a 'Ventris', or would you suggest someone get a 'Collider'. $ not being a factor. Pedalboard footprint, compatibility, superfluous options being the factors.
    Also, do you know if Source Audio will be adding a screen to the Ventris and/or Collider any time in the near future?

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  2 года назад +3

      Yes, DD-500 is the best delay multi-effects if you care about tone and actually have owned the representative delays as a baseline ;) . I love the guys that say that "pedal X has the best tape sound" but they've never played a real tape echo. It's like saying that "Paris it the most beautiful city on earth" and you've never been. So as this relates to the Collider, it's a great option and is basically half Ventris, and half Nemesis. However, in most classic rack settings in the 80's and 90's you'd rarely see delay and reverb in the same mix in parallel. Normally you'd have your line out feeding your wet effects, like stereo chorus, then feeding mix #1 with pitch and reverb into mix #2 with stereo delay. If you wanted to do this format with the Ventris, you'd need to put it in a mixer with a Micro Pitch, like the Eventide, both at 100% wet and then feed your DD-500 in stereo after the stereo outputs of your parallel mixer. Something like the Musicom Lab Parallelizer could do this. I don't know about them adding the screen, but your switcher can do all that for you if you you have say an RJM.

    • @armandosinger
      @armandosinger Год назад

      Very interesting. I always thought EVH did micropitch, plate reverb & digital delay all in parallel. It sounds like instead the micropitch & reverb are in parallel, then mixed and fed into delay.
      I think you can also accomplish this flow with the Eventide H90. It has a insert loops and allows mixing external boxes in series or parallel, and includes phase correction and can do the mixing, like Parralelizer or Duophony. So you’d have micropitch || Ventris plate going -> DD-500.
      Have you tried the Boss SDE 3000EVH? Any thoughts vs the DD-500? It’s wet/dry/wet implementation is supposed to be actually mix/dry/mix, but it’s unclear how you’d stack that with the other effects.

  • @nikdrown

    I got their collider. It sounds good but I wanted to free up some space and have midi controlled verb and delay. The verb easily replaced my cathedral but the delay fell shy of replacing memory man. And since then now the new boss re 202. So I guess it’s nice having that delay option and both being midi. The delay was just too narrow for me though.

    Check out a reaver pedal called a "vongon" that's the pedal's name and the model of the pedal is ultra sheer it's supposed to emulate the lexicon rack mountain units and the 70s and early 80s and they have down sampled down to 16 bit so they must be a down converter to convert the bits down to 16 bits and it doesn't have any glitching or problems with it to get you that exact sound check it out. Maybe you can make a video lesson about it with other reverbs that you have found that are new that are trying to simulate rack mount '80s reverb units I'm sure there is other pedals being made that are trying to incorporate the rack mount units in the pedal forms now
