  • Happy Independence Day! Today we celebrate the proud American tradition of gorging ourselves on hot dogs and 44 ounce beers. What better road to celebrate than New York's own Belt Parkway, which passes our most classic amusement park boardwalk, one of our most beautiful bridges, and our 73rd best airport!

Fun Fact, NY-878, the Nassau Expressway, is actually I-878. It is only an Official Interstate in the East bound direction coming off the Belt for about a mile. It is unsigned but it is in the official records as the shortest Interstate. It is up to standards from the Belt Parkway to Rockaway Boulevard only.

There's also a big gap and a downgraded section of the road in the Five Towns Area, and that whole segment should be converted into a real expressway.

I've been on the Belt Parkway multiple times to get from I-278 to JFK. The fact that there's an exit for the Belt Parkway on both decks of the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge is very helpful. Otherwise, the only nice thing I have to say is that the water views on the BP itself help you stay calm when you're in the middle of traffic no matter what time of day it is and you're trying to catch a flight.

When I was in grade school in the 1980s (in Pittsburgh), we learned that the Verrazano Narrows Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. That hasn't been true for quite some time, but for some reason I remember that fact. I have no idea why that was something we learned.

The exit numbers on the Belt Pkwy. are on the mileage system. There are gaps in exit numbers between Exits 9 (Knapp St.) thru 17 (Cross Bay Blvd.) where there are a couple of miles in between exits.

  • @scudmonger

Westbound belt pkwy to JFK airport would take the JFK expressway exit. Also, the ordinal numbering with the a/b/c vs E/W/N/S, the story goes, that the a/b/c are additional exits added after the road was built. They would not re-order the ordinal exits with a new exit, but instead just add an a/b/c, so you would have an exit 26, then 26a, 26b and so on. The cardinal directions are mainly cloverleaf exits where the first ramp may be intended to go north, and then the cloverleaf under the overpass is the one going south. Note that the two can be combined, as with the interchange with 135 and the Southern State Parkway, which is exits 28 A N and 28 A S.

I haven't driven the entire Belt Pkwy or checked it in Google maps, but I'm expecting the N/S exits only apply when one street has separate exits for travel in each direction. If it's distinct streets/roads, they probably assign letters A, B, etc.

The belt went through a pretty significant renovation a few years ago. I just wish they made it suitable for trucks. The BQE in Brooklyn is in serious disrepair and sadly it’s only a matter of time before it collapses. That would cause a major disruption for traffic.
Also thanks for including some of the cross island parkway on here. When I saw that you were doing the belt parkway I felt the belt was too short for it’s own video and that the cross island should be included.

Happy 4th! I had a small book about 15 years that gave a list of the Top 10 roller coasters in the United States. The Cyclone ranked at #10 behind two (9 and 7) at Kings Island near Cincinnati, one (8) at Universal Orlando, two (6 and 2) at Cedar Point in Sandusky, one (5) at a Six Flags near Springfield MA, one (4) at Lake Compounce near Waterbury, one (3) at a Six Flags in Los Angeles County, and the top one at a Six Flags in the Jersey Shore region of greater New York.
For some reason, the weather app on my iPhone has New York as one of three defaults (along with the current location and Cupertino, a city 8.6 miles NW of San Jose); it looks like it’ll be a very nice Independence Day there at 84/68. Wish I could say the same for where I am in Reno; in spite of my mid-latitude location and high altitude, we’re looking at 98/60 today. Unbelievably, this is about average for July in Northern Nevada, and this weekend will only be worse, approaching 105!
That’s when I’m going to hit the road for a counterclockwise loop around the country across two weeks. I plan to document the mileage signs and overheads at major interchanges. We’ll see if punching bags like NM, LA, MS, NC, PA, MN and OR live up to their reputation on this channel. In the meantime, I thought I’d give a preview of what to expect, based off of what I see leaving my workplace 20 miles east of Reno 3/4 times a week, along with how I’d rate them, trying to take the overall environment into consideration.
Just after I 80 West NV Exit 32
    Sparks 14 Reno 17 Sacramento 147
    Rating: 9.5/10
    At I 80 West NV Exit 15
    I 80 Sacramento-I 580/US 395 Carson City/ Susanville
    Rating; 10/10.

A note on the ordinal numbers
Brooklyn and Queens don't use them. So 64 street is sixty four street. Manhattan is the only place with ordinal numbers (not sure about the Bronx or Staten Island). The signs even say 42nd st, sixth ave. Why they decided to do that? I have no idea...
I used to have to drive around Brooklyn and Queens visiting clients and performing IT work. I've noticed that myself, even my GPS used to say things like that.

@@ControlCityFreakon the subway? That's absolutely the case. Especially the stations where the street names are in tile. Though now I'm questioning my own sanity because I could swear the 1, 2 and 3 signs at Penn Station say 34th St... I'm going to have to take a real careful look at those signs next time I go.
On the surface, you're right, but it really depends. The streets i mentioned above, 42nd and 6th, are signed that way. 6th is even spelled out sixth. Why those two in particular? I have no idea ha ha!
      I'm sure there's more.
For a grid city it's got a lot of inconsistencies
