Yngwie had just burst onto the scene with his feature in Guitar Player Magazine´s New Talent Spotlight column by Mike Varney a few years earlier and also releashed his first or maybe two albums when this went down so they had all heard of him but not necessarily heard him or seen him play.
You should remember that these were all some of the most famous contemporary guitar players of the day, save EVH, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, so they were no dilletant amateurs themselves but legend has it that when Yngwie started tracking takes for his solo part the entire studio control room just fell into silence since NOBODY had any idea how he was doing it or had ever heard neo-classical metal before as he was the guy who developed it.
Must have felt like they all knew how tocome up with a cool muscle car customization when Yngwie stops by to show people how to design a Formula 1 car.
The story goes that the only other guitar player that could actually follow him was George Lynch since he had previously dabbled into some classical structures and playing techniques himself,- but never to the extent Yngwie had taken it,- and from a guitar playing musicians´ perspective and skill level he simply blew everybody out of the water.
Great rewatch - watched it when it aired on the more underground tv-stations that would show MTV, which were the places the metal scene and music television in general were given attention and being aired back in those days in as far and remote places as Scandinavia.

It was actually Vivian Campbell( Dio guitarist) and Jimmy Bain( Dio bassist) idea to do it and Ronnie helped in a big way by putting it together n writing it Vinnie and Bain and he produced it and everything. Dio did a great job selecting the voices n guitarist.

Hah! This was epic - I am a little biased with how much I loved it a little extra because it was the video I'd made with the names, lyrics, etc! So that was so cool. I also loved all the extra stuff you discussed during this - about interviewing Kevin (RIP) and such. (And I feel like you need to post pictures of you as Rocky the Fox when ye talk about it) :D

The year after this Adrian Smith and Dave Murray of Iron Maiden had their longest guitar duel in the epic "Alexander the great". Some absolutely glorious shredding.
...and it makes me wonder: did this happen because their "takes" wasn't added to the song?

They were added, but did only harmonies which you can hear mixed in the background of chorus (ex. at 24:18 to 24:28; typical mid 80s Maiden tone).
Also fun fact, Halford left even Dio speechless and he had retakes with everyone else. There was a part where Rob screamed "we are fire, yes we are fire" (give or take) in his famous high range but it was just too strong and left out sadly. And for the stuff that's in there, he was put a couple of dB under others and was still standing out. Kevin also had some more parts than those in final mix. Dokken was struggling since his singing voice if far smoother but they found a way to fit it in.

I bet the money spent on drugs & drink doubled the money made by the song itself - lol! (God, I miss the 80's!)

why he's the 🤘🤘Godfather of Metal 🤘🤘 "These go to 11". Y&T "Summertime Girls" is one of my all time Hair Metal songs. RIP Kevin Dubrow. somebody had QR III on our senior trip to an amusement park. i played "The Wild and The Young" until my walkman batteries died. Dokken "Heaven Sent" on my all time playlist. was that the guy from Jackyl, or the guy from W.A.S.P. arm in arm with Kevin at the end you couldn't remember? that was my first thought seeing him. was never super into either. just kinda sorta knew there was a metal guy who looked crazy fronting a band.

Amazing collaboration. USA for Africa was the first, and it was great, it made this one possible. But USA for Haiti was a disaster, trying to hard to recreate the original.
