The big part of the story you missed is that Samuel Umtiti got his knee injury BEFORE the World Cup. At the age of 25 at that time, he had 2 options : do surgery, making him miss the tournament, or play with that injury, and probably never recover from it again. He chose the latter, at he didn't want to miss the World Cup. Samuel Umtiti effectively sacrificed his knee and career for his national team and to become World Champion. I find his story touching and brave. No matter how his career ends, Samuel Umtiti is a World Champion, and will always be !
@@Football_Agent_YTyeah how could you skip over a crucial detail like that? How thorough was your research if you didn’t include that? Without that detail it changes the story of Umtiti’s career. Getting injured at the end of the season just before the World Cup, him getting a very contract renewal from bartomeu very soon after the injury gave Umtiti all the assurances he needed to put his country ahead of his club and his career because he was guaranteed a big contract for several years whether he played for Barca. So he played for France while injured rather than get surgery and he was never the same afterwards for Barca.
Umitit was actually 24 at the World Cup, so preatty young, but atleast he achieved winning the World Cup for once in his life many other football players cant ever achieve themselves.
I would say he didn''t ruin his career, since he won the world cup. He knew the risks, because he already got a knee injury before the world cup. He still chose to play and won with a legendary team. After that he enjoyed his massive contract at Barca.
I get what you mean, but from a competitive perspective his career was basically over after the world cup (at least on the top level. I guess he did enjoy his salary though🫣
And who cares about him nowadays? The football world keeps spinning now they've easily replaced him with guys like Uppamecano Kounde and others it's a sacrifice for nothing a world cup is for a short moment health is the most important thing but he was way too greedy and wanted to show that it was worthy to refuse Cameroon for France now no Cameroon nor France care about him at all
@@dardanmorina9603He won the world cup, something 95%+ of players will never achieve. He's made millions, and his body will still be more than functional enough to live out his life. He didn't do it for 'nothing', the man is set.
@@dardanmorina9603 Of course it was worthy to refuse Cameroon for France. Cameroon has never had any chance of winning the World Cup even. Have they even qualified for the tournament ever before? You dont get that winning the World Cup throphy is very big and so im not sure was it worth it to him play in the World Cup to get then injuries, because you cant win bigger throphy in football, than the World Cup throphy. Other football players have also got injuries, that never made them as good anymore in football, like Michael Owen and R9, so I dont think Umitit is that mad that he cant play for french national team anymore, when atleast he won the World Cup still.
He made the right choice tbh. We've heard Messi saying he would give up everything he ever won just to win the world cup with Argentina, and that's what Umtiti did. He sacrificed all the trophies he might win with Barca in the future for a chance to win the WC. It was a win-lose or lose-lose gamble for him.
Considering Messi has a reoccurring hamstring issue, I'd assume he did the same. He had slight hamstring issues at PSG, then in the world cup I remember it got a bit more serious, but he played through it. Now at Miami he's suffering the consequences of it. In my opinion it's the right choice.
Had Umtiti missed the 2018 World Cup, I don't think he would have ever won anything with France. The new defenders after 2018 came in thick and fast, and we saw how France struggled in 2021-2022, still losing a World Cup final after a comeback. Sam just perfectly took the window of opportunity, and deserves to be praised for that. No sacrifice, no victory, and no glory.
They made it to the world cup final in 2022 despite like 8 injured players. Some that were key starting players like Pogba, Benzema and Kante. It's just shocking what they have been able to achieve. At least they won a Nations League. 😅
When discussing this topic, I can’t believe you managed to leave out the real reason why you can say he sacrificed his career for the WC : he already had recurring knee issues prior to the World Cup, which he could’ve sorted out for good by undergoing extensive treatment, but that would’ve forced him to miss out on the WC. The real sacrifice is that he chose to play through this knee injury to win the WC, which led to him damaging his knee for good and becoming the injury-prone Umtiti that we knew from 2018 onwards
Same thing happen to Fernando Torres. Sacrifices is knees for a world cup title. Players will more be remembered for a World Cup title than a league or Champions league.
While I think everyone understands why he refrained from knee surgery to play in the WC, what was the "alternative" treatment he undertook that failed to remedy the injury? And why didnt Barca get the best surgeon for him after it was apparent it was needed?
He mainly focused on recovering naturally, so basically just a lot of rest and rehab exercises. Not a bad way of treatment by itself, but it takes longer. Barca decided to go with Umtiti's wish to recover this way instead of surgery. So Barca refrained from getting a surgeon for Umtiti, as Umtiti just didn't want that.
I think the team knew that the player needed months kf rest off the pitch. Just relax and some exercise for tissues to heal fully. "But they thought it wiser to work the bull." Now we have a broken bull. Shouldn't this be clear or what? We should rather praise him, for he have us a great time, bringing us Glory. Vive L'Afrique.
Hard to say, but probably yes. Especially when he injured his knee for the second time later that year, surgery would have helped a lot. As I said in this video, I don't really no why he didn't get surgery, but Umtiti seems to regret that nowadays.
No. He needed to get surgery ASAP. Playing in the World Cup was done expressly against the clubs wishes because the medical staff knew he could and would aggravate his injury by playing in competition during the off season. He even admitted that he made his injury worse by doing so.
kinda reminds me at Cristiano Ronaldo that risked his knee injury to play at big tournament (i forgot which), after that injury he can no longer dribble like he used to be, but he compensate it with high jump later in his career
I find this video kinda aggravating for leaving out that Umtiti’s injury problems began in may right at the end of the season BEFORE the World Cup was due to start. He sat out the rest of the season but wasn’t fully healed. The club urged him to get surgery to address the problem with his knee but he refused and chose to pay for les bleu instead and made his injury worse. The improved contract that bartomeu gave him right at the end of the season was clearly a mistake as far as Barca were concerned. It basically said to Umtiti “do what you want, my guy. This contact means your set for life. You’ll be paid huge wages for years to come whether you play or not”. And with his persistent injuries and drastic drop in form Barca couldn’t even give him away whereas a season before letting another club snatch him away by paying his 60 million release clause felt like it would be letting him go cheaply given how important he has become for the club. How thorough was the research done for this if they didn’t include that? It is a pretty important detail and it’s not exactly a secret i could Google it in less than a minute.
