- Edinburgh Castle : A Fortress of Heritage
Early Origins
Perched on the volcanic Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle's history stretches back to at least the Iron Age. It has served as a significant royal residence, military stronghold, and a symbol of Scottish heritage. The earliest human habitation of the site dates to around 850 BC. The strategic location made it a prime spot for defence and control.
Medieval Fortress
During the early medieval period, Edinburgh Castle was a crucial royal residence. The castle's prominence grew under the reign of King Malcolm III and Queen Margaret in the 11th century. St. Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in the castle, was built during this time.
The castle became a focal point during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. It changed hands between the Scots and the English multiple times. Notably, Robert the Bruce's forces recaptured the castle in 1314 after the Battle of Bannockburn.
Renaissance Splendour
The 15th and 16th centuries saw significant developments. King James IV initiated major construction projects, including the Great Hall (1511). James V's reign brought further modifications, with the construction of the Half Moon Battery and the upgrading of defences to withstand artillery.
Mary, Queen of Scots gave birth to James VI in the Royal Palace within the castle in 1566. This event marked the castle as a royal birthplace, further cementing its significance.
Military Stronghold
The 17th century transitioned the castle's role from royal residence to military barracks. During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, it was besieged and captured by the forces of Oliver Cromwell in 1650. The Jacobite risings of the 18th century also saw the castle fortified and besieged.
The castle housed prisoners of war during the American Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars, adding another layer to its multifaceted history.
Modern Era and Preservation
In the 19th century, efforts to preserve the castle's historical aspects began. Architect William Henry Playfair led restoration works, while the castle's military role slowly diminished. Today, Edinburgh Castle is a prominent tourist attraction and a symbol of Scottish heritage. The Crown Jewels of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, and the National War Museum of Scotland are housed within its walls.
Cultural Significance
Edinburgh Castle remains an iconic symbol of Scotland. It hosts the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh. The castle's commanding presence over the city skyline and its storied past make it an enduring emblem of Scottish resilience and identity.
Edinburgh Castle's history is a tapestry of architectural evolution, political intrigue, and cultural significance, woven over centuries atop Castle Rock. It stands not only as a monument to Scotland's past but also as a beacon of its enduring spirit.

Wow, the raven is brillant! Great musical score and an overall enjoyable foray into the castle and it's history Jim.
Cheers for watching and commenting, Paul. It's a castle I hate far too commercialised for me. I need them abandoned to walk through in peace. Yes, the Raven was a total stroke of luck, nearly landed on the camera 😂
That was really good to watch. The castle is beautiful and you captured it so well. Glad you managed to finally use that music. Love the raven 😃👍~ Anna
Thanks so much, Anna, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I vowed i would only use the tune for Edinburgh Castle, so worked out well. Unfortunately, the castle is just too commercialised for my liking. I need old and abandoned to be 😊
@@eyeintheskydrone4k Sounded great and I know what you mean about certain castles. Loved that raven !
Yes that was a shock for me it nearly landed on the camera. A posing Raven 😆

Cheers for watching Steve It was a fun weekend even though I couldnt get the drone lifted. Yes the Caledonian Hotel was amazing, and their Breakfast was to die for
Really good video bud, Edinburgh is an awesome place. I like the music too... for some reason it makes me want to buy a tomahawk! 😆

Absolute class work mate great footage big cheeky bird was brilliant call you the "bird man of Edinburgh lol" shame about the weather but thats scotland for you eh? cracking stuff mate loved it!!!
Aye the bird was a total surprise a cheeky bugger. Its Scotland Johnny the weather a dont know. It was good all day inside the Castle. Ach well a few Guinness and A few Halfs was a good weekend
@@eyeintheskydrone4k hotel looked amazing
The Caledononian
@@eyeintheskydrone4k you win the bloomin lottery? lol looks brilliant
My son works for Hilton Group 50% off rooms, dinner, drinks
I've had 3 visits to the castle and I know if I went again I'd discover even more nooks and crannies to admire. This was a great video taking me back in time and rekindling memories. Haha a drink or 6! Lovely hotel. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
Thanks Anita for watching and i am glad it stirred some memories for you. Its not my favourite place to visit. Too Commercialised now feels like Alton Towers. I love to visit Castles that are Abandoned and noone visits. Anyway the hotel was Amazing with Breakfast to die for, and what a selection of fine whisky. I definately had a sore head at breakfast lol
@@eyeintheskydrone4k 🤣🤣 Breakfast sounded dangerous. Oh I agree about the commercialism. I visited with my cousin for the first time in 2001- when my grandson from Australia came over in 2018 I just had to show him the castle..🤣 and so hubby didn't miss out he and I went there too. So each time with someone else so 3 different precious memories. 🩷
Your film is really well done! I love the editing. That castle is magnificent, and the music is perfect! 😊
What can I say NPP thanks for stopping by and watching. I really do appreciate your support of the channel, and I am glad your enjoying the videos

Thanks for watching and commenting on the video. I am glad you enjoyed it
Cracking city is Edinburgh, got married there just over 25 years ago. I love the close up of the bird, brilliant touch. And I was say the wait to use the tune was well worth it. Also love the use of drone and handheld. Awesome job
Cheers for watching and commenting. Yes, the bird was just so lucky I couldn't believe it myself. Unfortunately the castle is just too commercialised for me. I need something abandoned where no-one visits. Everything you see was phone footage only. I couldn't lift the drone due to rain later that night. Was a great weekend, though, plenty of fine whisky to keep me happy 😊
Brill video (and tune of course!) loved the crow drinking the water too 😂
Cheers Jaq for stopping by the channel. Yes the Crow was a total fluke it nearly landed on my camera lol. See you Wednesday on DSL
Excellent
Cheers Dave appreciate you watching and commenting

Superby done Jim. A raven (?) too! With a fishing rod and your camera you could grab some great 'drone' footage up there🤣 Altogether great editing. I htrust you had a swell time in the luxury Caledonian.✌
The bird was just total luck Terry nearly landed on the camera. Was a good couple of days even if the weather didn't play ball. Yes the Caledononian was Outstanding and the Breakfast to die for
@@eyeintheskydrone4k Perfect!
Fantastic tour and video!

I have to get back to Edinburgh, unfortunately I don't know any of the fly spots. Awesome video with great music 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting on the video. Edinburgh is littered with places to fly. Google Maps is your best friend
@eyeintheskydrone4k I have to look into it. Busy upgrading my NVME storage, I literally have 18 TB of drone videos on my systems
Great video Jim, makes me homesick! Slainté Mhath
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. If only the weather was better. The same to you my friend take care
Really enjoyed this, great video, perfect music. Welcome as a new subscriber👍
It's not my most favourite Castle to visit. Too commercialised for me, but was through on business so had to get some footage. Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Beautiful city, beautiful castle - entry price is way too expensive. Nice video
Cheers for watching. I'm lucky I don't pay entry as I have Historic Scotland membership. It's a castle i hate visiting, too commercialised. Like bloody Alton Towers. I prefer old abandoned castles to walk through
Too bad you were not able to get the drone in the sky, but still a great video. Well done!
Thanks for watching and commenting. I really do appreciate it. Yes, I was dying to get drone up, but the weather was just too bad. Plus, side it let me sample the fine whisky on offer at hotel 😆
@@eyeintheskydrone4k You will have other occassions to fly your drone there. At least you appreciated from your time there!
Nice to see the Old Reekie. Shame about the weather/non flight.
Cheers Seb for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Getting the feeling Edinburgh doesnt like me flying a drone. Last 2 visits failed due to weather lol. Anyway the beer and whisky was nice
Beautifully filmed! You really captured Edinburgh’s character - the historic buildings, the vibe, and those incredible views. With my DNA showing about 60% Scottish, Welsh, and Irish heritage, plus 20% Scandinavian and 5% Finnish, I’ve just understood that it all might be linked to my ancestors. It’s fascinating to see a city that connects somewhat to my heritage, but for sure, places like Dublin, which was founded by Vikings. Loved your take on it! What did you think about my new video about the AIR 3S 😉 ???
First of all let me say thanks for such a comment. I just love promoting the place I call Home. If you enjoyed then I am really pleased. Left full comment on your Air3s video
