  • Game of Thrones Season 8 is over but the A song of ice and fire analysis has just began! One of the most mysterious characters in Game of Thrones and A Song of ice and Fire is Bloodraven or Brynden Rivers. In the History of Westeros and during the Targaryen Rule Bloodraven acted as Hand of the King to Targaryen Kings but more importantly Bloodraven was a Greenseer. Blood Raven seems to be the actual foreshadowing for Brandon Stark or King Bran Stark! In this video I will go thru all of the clues that George RR Martin laid that shows how Bloodraven influenced the story from the very first chapter and How Bloodraven is ultimately the foreshadowing for Bran and one of the most important characters of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and fire! We will go back to House Blackwood, The Blackfyre Rebellions and The Tales of Dunk and Egg!
    Thanks for watching!

    I think King Bran in the books will actually be a villain...how can a person who can see the future and puts themselves on the throne not be? It means he knew basically every evil others are planning and let's them, maybe even pushes them

    • @pplr1
      @pplr1 4 года назад +6

      In the show Bran chooses not to warn Dany about Euron's ambush but does choose to let Jon know about his linage right then when it will complicate things for Jon and Dany (and Dany will be grieving soon already). What if Bran wanted King's Landing to burn and for Jon and Dany to both be knocked out of the running?
      Dany has a lot of ideals in the show so maybe Bran wants her to loose them and flip out. That doesn't sound like a good person if Bran is planning to ruin peoples' lives and kill thousands.

    • @christophertracy383
      @christophertracy383 4 года назад +2

      Yes, I agree with that assumption. Bran could have spoken 2 Daenerys and warned her if U leave now Rhaegal and Missandei will die. Wait.

    • @nomadiclora

      @@pplr1 Not its not like that. Bran didn't plan anything - KL buring, Dany's demise, Jon's action. Because we never saw anything that indicated Bran's involvement in those events. But yes i have to mention that the writers were very bad at storytelling. But still those were the major part of the entire story. I doubt that they will leave it for interpretation.
      Secondly, Bran can't see the future, but only glimpses of the future and i don't think he can see the glimpses of the future whenever he wants.
      Third, why he didn't warn about the ambuse??? see Dany and co were on their way to Dragonstone. It takes weeks or months to travel from Winterfell to Dragonstone. I doubt that he keep spyning on people day and night. He said he mostly lives in the past. i think he was unaware of their planning or even if he did it was too late. Again, the whole Eurons ambuse was poorly executed. So many things were happening and nothing well explained.
      Fourth, Why did he ask Sam to tell the truth so soon?? because the great war was coming and he was not sure what will be the outcome. Didn't he ask Jaime- how do you know there will be afterwards?? (another proof Bran can't see the future) Since it was about Jon's parents and he deserves the truth Bran didn't waste any time to tell him the truth before the great war.
      but thats my interpretation. But narrative wise they really sucked last season. Rushed everything, so many potholes and plot armor. They just told 15-20 episodes worth of story in just 6 episodes. I can say about same for season 7. But story wise it was great, not bad not great just good.
      (Pardon my English)

    • @pplr1
      @pplr1 3 года назад +2

      @@nomadiclora It is ok that you have spelling problems (ambush is spelled "ambush"). I get that English isn't your 1st language and you are learning so-like I said-it is ok. To Bran, they never show just how much of the future Bran can see. However it is shown that at least some magic users in GoT can see the future and as a powerful magic user it is possible Bran can see more of the possible futures than others. D and D did a very bad job of telling the story-they managed to break with multiple characters when making season 8 (Dany and Varys are 2 of the most notable but other characters were harmed as well). So I think it is valid not to take season 8 seriously at all.
      If people do take season 8 seriously then there is a problem because the detail in it matter. D and D may have intended to make Bran look like a nice person but his actions could very easily be interpreted to mean he has evil plans. Since Bran has these magic powers he doesn't need to talk with out people to plan things out.
      But if you look at the impact of Bran's decisions or efforts they all seem to increase the likelihood that King's Landing burns. If he can see the future then that means he is knowingly trying to make the city burn.
      Also in season 8 Bran can withhold the truth from people and possibly lie to them. He went looking through decades if not centuries to find a better chair design than what Tyrion gave him for free yet tells Tyrion he doesn't really "want" anymore. It seems like Bran may have simply been trying to trick Tyrion as someone who does that probably still wants things.
      Sam is having 2nd thoughts about telling Jon about his linage. Bran is the one who encourages it and thus increases stress on Dany and Jon's relationship just when Dany is about to need a shoulder to lean on since she will be grieving for Jorah.
      Bran knows Jon's linage but doesn't bring it up at the council when they are discussing who should be king. Bran really doesn't have a good excuse for that since he was pushing Jon's linage earlier. Unless the point of Jon's linage was to use it to harm Jon and Dany's relationship and only that-meaning once it had been used for that purpose Bran didn't want it brought up anymore (otherwise it may hinder him getting the crown).
      Bran can also see both the past and present all over Westeros. So he should've seen Euron's ambush while it was in the early stages when Cersei and Euron were still talking about it and Euron's ships were being equipped with anti-dragon scorpions at King's Landing. So even if he cannot see the future that is something he should've been able to notice.
      But odds are he can see the future in GoT. That is why he said "Why do you think I came all this way?" when Tyrion asked him if he would be king.
      The writing is very flawed. It is possible this is all by mistake. But even if it is that these are mistakes, they are what D and D decided to include as part of season 8 which means they included the evidence Bran could be manipulating things in season 8.

      Bloodraven warged into Bran and manipulated the events to set himself in the throne.
      Moreover, when he is about to die, he will do the samething again, thus achieving immortality.

    If Bran becomes King in the books it'll be set up better and more flushed out so I can't wait for the books but Bran being King in the show wasn't earned mainly because they rushed it. I felt like Bran should've been on the council as master of whisperers or as someone's hand only because the writers didn't build his story up to that point but who am I? I'm not a writer and the show has ended and I do accept what we got just me doing my rant as usual.

    I do not think, that Bran will be a good king, he was shown to be clearly unempathic and I do not refere to after he became the three eyed crow, but before. He had no remorse at all using Hodor like a tool, stealing his body without any need, thinking of using Hodors body to be with Meera, he ate human flesh while warging, a thing even his wild and dangerous assasinsister had shyed away from . . . . With the greenseers power he has the tools to be a great king, but he does not have the needed mindsetting of putting others peoples needs before your own. He has nothing of the idealism that Dany showed till she snappes, Tyrion still has after all he is been through, brought Ned to the grave and made Jon so well loved and a leading person under the wildlings.
    But with Bran as he is, he is just one thing, dangerous! Even with beeing more nice he would not make a good king, he will be feered, not admired and feer is a dangerous motivation to follow someone. Also will sucsession be just as much of an topic as with Dany

    i'm getting the impression that whatever Bran becomes, is something he had always been.
    but that i mean: i'm thinking Blood Raven is Brans disciple.
    the time traveling Bran likely taught BR everything BR knows; but not everything Bran knows, but just enough to convince BR so cause Brans creation (a time loop paradox, much like Hodor).
    I believe Bran is almost every Bran throughout time; but not every Bran.
    and one of those Bran's (lives), recruited Blood Raven, who Bran knew would be the one to create Bran as the "Three Eyed Raven" (w/e it'll be called).
    by the end of the story, Bran will likely leave his body, and begin his very long existence through each Bran Stark, starting with Bran the Builder.
    makes sense.

    I think Bran is a horrible choice for king if he can see the future and allowed or-worse-planned for thousands to die in King's Landing to get Jon and Dany out of the way. Bran picks when to tell Jon about his linage to put max stress on Jon and Dany's relationship at a time when Dany will be grieving. Then Bran refuses to warn Dany about Euron's ambush-putting Dany through more emotional pain and grieving. Bran may have seen what it would take for Dany to crack and did what he could to ensure it would happen which means Bran planned for thousands die in King's Landing as part of that. Lack of concern for people's lives or willingness to cause thus committing mass murder shows deep unfitness to be king either way.
    Thank you for all your effort to explain the characters. I just think you could be making a mistake in assuming Bran (now no longer Bran) will use his powers for good when he may have already done the reverse.

    I'm not sure if Bran is the best choice I'd definitely give him a high position on the council as master of whisperers or as someone's hand. When he let Sansa have the North as independent that would actually start a war because realistically Dorne and the Iron Islands would want to declare independence as well. But since the show ended it's not going to matter and also when Bran dies another war could start because whoever they pick for king could change the rules back to being that his son or daughter would inherit after him unless bran already has someone selected before he dies as a 3 eyed raven.

    Loved this video. Super informative and in depth. Great analysis!!!
    Although, I don’t think bran being king would be a good choice. Which is also why I believe blood raven stepped down from the power himself. It’s like that old spider man saying goes “With great power comes great responsibility”, or that other quote “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses and while foresight is a great strength that gives a huge advantage, it’s more suited to someone who is a hand to a king. Bran is a greatly in tune with spirit and the magickal realm of GOT- but he isn’t really a Leader. He doesn’t stir the hearts of people the way Jon or Daenerys do. He isn’t a conqueror, or a Uniter of people. He isn’t like Dany, who freed slaves and convinced a mostly patriarchal society to not only accept her but to FOLLOW her in her quest, and he isn’t like Jon who United countless houses and convinced them to lay down their lives against a common enemy. Bran has a leg up, but If GOT has taught us anything being quick, clever, having magic abilities or guile or wit alone is not enough. You have to have that It ™ factor to really be able to rally nations together. What makes the most sense to me is if Bran continues along in his spiritual journey, alone, and finds a way to defeat “winter”. I think Bran’s destiny is a much greater purpose than just politics or the iron throne.

    Wouldn't be surprised that D&D did not end the show at the books' planned ending, but a bit before, and that the books will cover some time with Bran as ruler. In the books, the Blackfyres are essentially retaking power through Aegon, so BR having more importance post-WW-plot makes sense considering his past. I suspect Bran will permanently warg into Aegon, a popular ruler, to rule.

    Thankyou for another great video Gray.
    If season 8 was close to GRRMs outline, I must say I am glad he is a gardener-writer and not an architect. I hope he changes a lot of the ending as the story progress. About Bran as king, I think its a bit spooky to have a greenseer as king.....he does not need any system of intelligence or courts does he?....He becomes almost almighty....I dont like it really...

    I have long wondered whether Coldhands might be a wighted corpse, skinchanged by Bloodraven. I think that will show the relationship of the Others and Wights, that they are animated through the same kind of magic that allows Bran to warg Summer.
    Bloodraven needs to show Bran not just information he doesn't know to search for, but also the extent of his powers.

    Thinking about it, if Bloodraven has a plan for the rule of Westeros it is most likely in the form that he himself ruled it: as the voice in the king's ear. I think it is most likely that his idea isn't for Bran to become king, but rather that Bran become the power behind the throne. This was how Bloodraven himself ran the kingdom and also why he never put himself forward as a candidate for the crown.
    All that being said, this all assumes he has any say in the matter. If you'll remember a comment I made on one of your videos a year ago, I think Bloodraven is really just the pawn of a greater power. He may think it is his plan he is following. But I am sure something else, something far more powerful than him, is really pulling the strings. I ask Gemma on her patreon feed about whether there might be some overarching power manipulating the entire Targaryen family. I mean from Aegon onward. This power appears to be assuring that certain people sit on the throne, ensuring that others who might compete for it are removed. Bloodraven may just be another cog in this plan. Unfortunately, she never answered me.

    • @GrayArea
      @GrayArea  5 лет назад +2

      You may be right. I think the powers that be wanted the Targaryens to die out and/or dilute their bloodline beyond repair. George has done so much on Valyrian and Targ history as opposed to any other house. Bloodraven choosing Egg is interesting because Egg’s wife is a Blackwood like him. Also, it’s interesting that you think Bloodraven is pawn. I think Mother Nature always wins. Dragons, white walkers and Valyrians are Anti- Nature And Destruction in its purest forms (ice and fire) and Bloodraven And Bran are the mechanisms to correct this corruption of nature.

      @@GrayArea But there is more to it than that. If the Starks do have Children's blood in them than Jon has both the blood of the dragon and the blood of the forest. I can't help but think this is why he was specifically set up to be the king, that that unique combination is what is needed to restore whatever balance once existed.

  • @sinjun1973
    @sinjun1973 5 лет назад +3

    I don't think Bloodraven is the 3 Eyed Crow.
    A Raven would be Raven, wouldn't he?
    He seems confused at the question of hi being the Crow and the Children completely ignore it. We know the Children are not to be trusted.
    I think Bloodraven always appeared as a tree and the Crow is The Other.
    The touch did more than mark Bran. I think it gave The Other a way into his mind.
    I think there's a great danger in accepting Bran into the midst of Winterfell.
    George is very tricky. That's one of my favorite things about his writing.

    I don't like the idea of Bran as king.
    I guess I will have to wait and see how George write it in the books to see I am convinced.
    But to be honest since I realized that this is ending it has taken a little bit of the Joy of the story. I just hope George can return it by giving a great twist to the ending.

    This is a great topic - I don't think the show delved at all into the meat of Bloodraven's story - but then the series was rushed after S4. Why they left Bran/Bloodraven out of S5 is a mystery.
    EDIT: Comments from me are that they missed the boat on the show (the showboat! lol) by not accepting HBO's offer because this story should have been better developed to give backstory to the 3ER. _Too much_ was left out for there, in any way, to be similarity to the books. I am looking forward now to the WOW as the books weaves vastly more interesting and complex stories. I completely agree with your views expressed. Great job (of course)!

  • @DD-ok2pt
    @DD-ok2pt 5 лет назад +3

    I politely disagree.
    If this was really BloodRaven then Bran would have heard the puppy Ghost. I think it is safe to say the BloodRaven is NOT really in control just like Bran is no longer in control of his own body. It is the 3 Eyed Raven aka Bran the Builder that has been living multiple second lives first in the bodies of the green seer Children of the Forest then when his cave entrance was blocked by the Night King he lured the green seer Bloodraven to his cave just like he lured the green seeing Bran.
    GRRM is making a HUGE distinction here that ONLY Jon could hear the pup. And an even bigger red flag that he contrast this with what Bran heard as we all know that the 3 Eyed Raven has an affinity for Bran and had been waiting for his birth for millennia. So alerting the reader that Jon could hear the pup but Bran couldn't is very telling.
    I think that Catelyn was correct "The Old Gods sent five pups" for Rob, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon... and someone else sent the 6th for Jon?
    I am more likely to believe that the 3Eyed Raven sent 5 pups and the Night King sent one for Jon.

    I hated Bran in terms of what his character did to the story. The idea of an all knowing character coming back to town and blowing up everybody's secrets is so uninteresting. There were all these wonderful secrets, especially regarding Littlefinger. Peter got found out because Bran knows everything. That is so boring.

    Thank you for putting this altogether. I think you are spot on and maybe Bloodraven knew he could not be King because the issue of the Night King. Maybe he knew a dragon or three would be needed. I also think Bran's motives are now intertwined with Bloodraven's and are heavily influenced by the power of weirwood "gods" & CotF. Did you notice the delicate olive green leaf pattern at Sansa's neck on her coronation gown?

  • @MrBrothafunk
    @MrBrothafunk 5 лет назад +2

    i think bloodraven was chosen to be the three eyed crow for his magical abilities as bran was chosen for his great magical abilities. I believe the three eyed crow is his own character and he transfers his consciousness into other magical being when his vessel weakens enough to have to have to move to another body similarly but more effectively to how varamyr six skins tried to do. So what if the three eyed crow is some person or more likely old and wise child of the forest who has traveled from green seer to green seer even as the children diminished and the only way to continue was to transfer into humans with the blood of the first men and being connected to the weirwood tress he can access the memories of all the children whose consciousness passed into the trees and through the weirwoods root sytems all the trees being connected he can see even further where the trees are. When bloodraven becomes the three eyed crow he gets absorbed and is not blood raven same with bran being lost in all the memories of the three eyed crow. I think the three eyed crow is more connected with the creation of the white walkers and maybe he is the great other or maybe not but definitely he has been around for a long time and he is powerful and the last of the children serve him and even sacrifice their lives for him. So yeah even if you dont agree i think you have to at least acknowledge the three eyed crow is its own character not bran and not bloodraven anymore.
