I was blown away with how he used a frosting bag to elegantly swirl the mashed potatoes on to the ground beef mixture!!

@lana lake There is also Cumberland Pie, which is native to the region of Cumbria. Very similar, but can be either beef or lamb, and has a layer of breadcrumbs on top as well as cheese. Gives it a delightful crunch.
I always remembered it as shepard's look after sheep = shepard's pie is the one with lamb.
Yes with sheppards pie (American version) the mashed potatoes are piped using an icing top to give the mashed potatoes shape. Just like his. They look like frosting. And we put it in the oven and it gets nice and toasty 😊

I don't think its intentional, its just the way that they were raised, if you were raised with a chef around and your parents didn't give him the time of day you would learn to do the same.
This made me oddly miss Diana... Never really cared about royals. Even if she wasn't perfect she was a good mum and good human being. Traits that William and Harry inherited.

Listening about how the royal princes were more relaxed with their mum and having lost her so young and losing that comforting and relaxing space they shared with the late princess Diana is so saddening.

The cottage pie when I was growing up was called Shepard's pie, sometimes with gravy and vegetables and sometimes no gravy or veggies

I love how the ingredients are always things that regular people could get with relative ease.
This is only the second video I've watched of his, but the one where he makes the Queen's favorite dish is also pretty simple. So I agree with you completely.
It because they are normal people believe it or not, and on top of that the kitchens in the palace are all classical French based. Classical French cuisine is very “basic” when it comes to the ingredients used! It’s actually very interesting you should do some research into it! We had a whole course at culinary school on the royal palace

I grew up hearing stories too by my uncle & grandmother every morning while they cooked breakfast & having tea/coffee. It was the best memories hearing my family laughing & reminiscing. I like the tip about letting it sit and set - my mash kept sinking so I was scaling back the gravy, making it too dry. Haven't made this for years but have been craving it recently. I'll swap to doing this now. I always like adding veg into the mix as well (hidden veggies for reluctant eaters!)

In America we have "Shepherd's Pie," much the same but with peas and carrots with the beef, or in between the beef & potato layers. I always loved it!
