- At the foothills of the Himalaya, along the border separating India and Nepal, Raji nomads still hunt for wild honey.
They scale the trees of the great Terai forest, risking their lives to harvest the honey of the apis laboriosa - the largest migratory bee in the world. Both slave and master of the bees, Bahadur defies the towering trees and braves death for the survival of his people.
After discovering written accounts of the Raji's way of life, photographer and filmmaker Eric Valli set out to discover what had become of these nomadic people.

I cannot express enough gratitude for these documentaries which i share to my friends.. this is a vital link to the reminder of who humanity truly is .. there could not be a more important time to remember the earth as companion. Blessings to the forest and its people ... 🙌🏽💕🙏🏼
Absolutely Brilliant..
Thank you so much for loving Nepal
Stop lying for likes.
Stop lying for likes.
They earn lots of money but never give these people anything like clothes and foods
I am from Nepal and thank you for making such a beautiful documentary. And indeed it is sad to see those beautiful forests disappearing to build houses 🥺🥺
,
Em
Are u still living in Nepal?
It’s beautiful seeing humans be humans without our western waste.
With respect to Raji nomads at the foothill of the Himalaya, from the USA. Love and peace friends.

These are real people. The men climb bee ropes barefoot into the tree tops. The woman carry their good on their head , barefoot.
And they carry their shoes in their hands.
These are my people. Respect from USA
Actually in Nepali language MAMA means uncle.....and in most of the Nepali communities if someone is somebody's MAMA then he becomes MAMA for all.....So this person's original name has to be something else.......Nice doc.....love from Darjeeling, India
Mama does mean uncle, though as refering to uncle(s) from paternal side of the family. Whilst Kaka also means uncle but from maternal side of the family.
Or is there other ways?
Because this is how i observed around me from different cultures and languages.
@@hitokiri_neko MAMA is from the maternal side (brother of the mother) and KAKA is from paternal side (brother of the father).
@@hitokiri_neko Mom is mother, Mama is Mothers brother (maternal uncle) pretty much everywhere in the Subcontinent.
Mama refers to maternal uncle in pretty much all languages in the subcontinent
@@hitokiri_nekoMama means mother's brother and kaka means father's brother
The ability to climb a twisted rope using this method takes amazing strength,
not to mention callouses between the toes. Humble and hardworking folks.
The Raji's borrowed a bit of honey from their bee neighbors but they robbed my heart. Where are you going? Where the bees are going. Where are the bees going? Where the flowers are. Fragrant in their existence, sweetness in their presence, Raji's are the honey amongst humans.
Beautifully said. . Very true.
Very brave people Kathyrn
What do they do with all of the beeswax I'm certain there's a market for it it is used for many things another gift from God in the honey is valuable for strength power and health and the Paul and even more. Here in the USA the bees only go in hives in Hollow trees and then you have to cut the tree down to get it I've never seen honey bees on the outside of the tree
You said it just like it REALLY is...today people are faaar, far away from the Nature...mostly taking,no giving back....exploiting yo the very end......
Beautiful place. When I was a child in Mexico, I experienced this honey harvesting. Not fun, and extremely difficult, but delicious at the end.🐝🐝🐝❤
These people are just amazing, the way that respect nature and live in balance with it. They take only what they need, as opposite to a greedy approach which caracterizes our world nowadays. Really nice documentary.
What is wrong with you? if there is a planetary disaster like a large volcano the climate change will kill these kind of people first. I cannot understand why you would respect these people, because in my mind they are on the cusp of death. I do not understand the live with nature people, because humans were produced by nature. If nature did not want us it would kill us, and does to those living on the cusp. Technology is a natural state that allows a conciousness to understand, and without that understanding there is only stagnation.
@@MegaMeaty Also what is wrong with you knowing ones expressed his gratitude to those people who live in the jungle?!
Please correct me if I am wrong but I thought these bees here particularly were dying out right now because of exactly these people. Because they only harvest the honey while never caring for the bees. But maybe it is extra terrestrials or Elvis or something, what do I know.
@@kokeskokeskokes Then what would you do if you were on their shoes?!.
@@arilambertus6060 I respect those that live in the jungle. Those are tough people. I was made to live in the jungle without much food, and I know it is hard. Modern humans are part of nature - however. Nature is a fight for survival, and those that have embraced technology have more chance to survive. Staying ignorant, and living naked in the jungle is not what nature intended for us.
The rowing with the bridge in the background, is a powerful piece of film.
The Raji are the first people I've heard of in my 80 years of living that I feel I can respect and call truly good.
Have you heard of the Luo?
How does it feel to be 80
True
uve lived a sad life
This documentary is possibly documented around 1998.The river in this documentary is Karnali river and the areas are of Bardiya,Kailali and Surkhet district.
I think its in 2001 cuz i noticed a movie poster which says indian (26:55) and that movie is released in 2001.

@@MrShivanani Yes, absolutely right you are!!
Beautiful and gentle people. It is wonderful to have a glimpse of their lives.
Mother nature is always bountiful , it gives us enough for everyone's need but not for greed , born and brought up in Himalayas we never needed anything from outside world . Modern age has destroyed traditional cultures everywhere and it is saddening .
What is interesting is these people and our own native American people know about taking care of the environment. It is the rest of us, with all our sophistication that don't get it.
How much daring truth which is true involved with poverty but their struggle to compete is immensely inspiring. Thankyou for making astounding wonderful documentary . Awesome work of cameraman.
Pure life clean hart.... The best life with out modern life 🌹🥀🌷🐝🐝
Thank you. Your films are more educational than our schools.
I absolutely loved thIs. I have a friend who is a bee "wrangler" for the movies. I have seen him work and it is nothing compared to what these people do. The only place I have seen these people is out in the open. I wonder if they have any kind of village or huts or some protection from the rain, etc.
Amazing and brave people 😎👏 I would love to see them do this in person. Great job once again Slice!
delightful story, stunning docu., - the honeycombs are so perfect, i love bees and honey!
adorable people, they live a hard Life, but i think in some way in harmony with Nature...
Thank you for this *SLICE* 🙏💖
It's a hard life for sure, starvation is hard , sickness is hard , death is hard, I live in Cambodia, part time. Going without food is more common than eating. The Cambodians eat dogs , monkeys , bats , insects, rice cost to much. That's how poor the Cambodians are. But it is a beautiful country, that's what you get when you have a dictator running your country, sort of like Biden's presidency. We will be like Cambodia soon.
beautiful. that is what i call life full of meaning.
I love Peter Coyote voice. He's done so many documentaries I've lost count. Even if he's not acting he will always have a job with his smooth voice and level matter of speaking
This was so inspiring, It will remind us how life should be live being contented and grateful for simple things we are lived for
You wouldn't like it, I live in Cambodia part time with my brother , it's a hard life, it's hard to see the poor sleeping on dirt floors with there children, people eating monkeys, dogs , insects , because they can't even afford rice to eat.
Only the rich can get by. So I would recant your comment & think about what you said.
I travel to Nepal I've been all over. I havent yet spent time in this region. But much thanks for this and all your documentations of our wonderful world. Slice your a credit to mankind 🙏🏾❤💛💚
Beautifully done documentary about a wonderful people, dedicated to the others they live with and yet caring about nature around them.
I pray these people and their nature endure for a very long time....🙏💖🙏
I Like all natives tribes in the world.
such extraordinary hardwork!! Immense heartfelt Thanks and gratitude for such remarkable stories of these remote still existence of tribal souls.Slice has done another dedication together with These individuals giving all of us the education of a lifetime....All the very best...🙏🌻
Quote: "The Raji never take more (honey) than they need."
A lesson I pray all politicians will be held accountable for.
Not everybody should be expected to remain content through pure subsistence. There is nothing wrong with rewarding a job well done… that being said, I cannot think of many politicians who have done a good job lately, and they certainly have taken more than their earned share of honey and should have their hands taken away.
That was the narrator's statement. Let us just be honest, greed is everybody's business. It is in nature. Even the mightiest tree is the greediest among plants. It's just a matter of oppurtunity and how much container you have.
@Valentino Tan not so, forest trees are all interconnected underground and communicate with each other. This is the latest scientific findings, astounding but true.
what a beautiful docu, respect for these people who respect nature, thanks for this video !
Blessings 2 Mother Earth AnD All Her Creatures That Help Feed Us!!! Awesome Documentry!!

What an unsurpassed cinematographic delight! Without a doubt the best documentary I've ever seen. Brilliant story, commentary, cinematography, directing, editing, music.... Kudos to all involved! Thank you!
I agree completely. Every being - including bees and trees , tribes people and film makers involved in the making of this documentary are
awesome beyond words. How humbling !
These people live in peace in the simplest way enjoying and collecting what nature offers them but does not take more than what they need, a good balance in co-existence between humans and nature
Very impressed with your docs, and with this one in particular. Keep the good work going, Slice!
Amazing Information and videography, thanks for sharing.

Pure delight. Everything is right. Everyone works.
Very, very nice documentary.. I do not know how to say thank you in sharing your amazing Video.. Millions of bees to kill you from bites...Scary bees and heights.
To survive is to collect honey and share amongst family members ..being a nomad no permanent place to stay.. everyday..
I remembered those days in tarai regions.... honey hunting with my friends💞💞🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵
The appreciation in their faces.such a beautiful life free from stress
No, not free from stress, just accepting of it and the difficulties in life.

Such a pure lifestyle.
The earth's crust in ratio to the size of the earth is equivalent to the skin of a soap bubble and we will all go pop due to the greed of the privileged few people who are making life difficult for us all and destroying the earth in the process. This was awesome.
Unbelievable, beautiful documentary
Most rough & tough lives of honey hunters. How they survive livelihood at the cost of lives. They combat adversaries as well as nature. But nature cherish them. Excellent video graph. I admire ur adventure & endeavour to explore human crisis.
I salute 🖐️the climber without safety equipment for honey...bravo the real spiderman..

Wouw - Slice is alway's fine but this one was exraordinary unusual beautiful and peculiar . . Thank's a LOT
what a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these extraordinary people
their bravery along with that of the camera man is astonishing!
So much the developed countries can learn from indigenous people , about climate change reversal , through conservation practices of flora and fauna in any geographical location. Discipline of destructive desires and greed need to be controlled .
Thank you

Subscribed! Amazing documentary! 💯
These people though lack most basic necessities have the biggest smiles and such a glow in their eyes that you can tell they are happy. Such glow that’s hard to see amongs us living the normal life.
What a beautiful and powerful culture
Excellent documentary! Beautiful People!
Away from chaos and problems i want to live my life like this way. Only loving from one another, no politics.
@MrPink sadly we cannot escape from problems, they simply are of a different kind than the ones we experience. And the community faces them together, more united in daily efforts than we are now. Once we also were more like this, and not so long ago either! Pre world war two, many remote European rural communities along the coastline and mountain areas especially, were living in a more integrated way. A whole way of life that is becoming more and more rare now.
“The only words of advice he ever gave his grandson were, “if you survive a fall, climb back up as soon as you can, before fear devours you.”
What a legend.
Wooow... GREAT Documentar Film 👏👏👏 Thank you 👍.
I'm in awe to see what does it mean to be devoted to this life, how he always faces abysmal every time he climbs the trees in quest for life.

I just watched the whole thing in a trance. Very cool.
Beautiful people, hard life but a good life.
amazing adventure my friend..thank you for presenting the extraordinary I'm watching you from Indonesia...💜⚘🔔🔔🔔🇮🇩
The Raji people would never burn the forest homes of the orang utans, the bees etc. Please persuade the burners to plant nectar-producing trees so honey instead of palm oil is harvested.
The background music is intense. Thank you and much Love from the Philippines.
Nice documentary...I love watching your documentary...from Philippines

Beautiful nature that god created
I learn so much from this wise Community.
Thank you for the Documentery
Very well documented but I hate when the western world uses Indian Music as a background which has no connection with Nepalese culture. Nepal has it's own folk music which differentiates it from others. Also this looks like a very old documentary, I saw them looking at the film negatives, we used to have such film roll cameras back in the 90's.
Friend, you don't even know the half of it; I can't tell you how many times I've been watching something about Egypt or Arabia and suddenly the sound of an indian tabla appears, or Armenian duduk flutes start playing.
they at least got the right continent this time lol
