Thanks Mel, I think I'm going to try to shorten the bottom tier first and wear with my black heeled clogs for a bit of height to see if that works .... here's hoping Jayne x
Just started watching your channel and love it but the dress, I would definitely take the bottom frill off and wear with black leggings and boots. Lovely fabric and the colour suits you x
I love this pattern and have made it myself in a dark floral- re the tartan I do agree with some of the other comments and my suggestion would also be to shorten the bottom tier to about 3 inches so the is still a ruffle but not so long - I think that would really suit your lovely style. The fabric is really nice and perfect for this time of year. I recently started watching your vlogs and am really enjoying them - thank you
Hi Rachel thank you for your lovely comments and yes your right about the length I think I’m going to shorten it and I’ve also found my heeled clogs which may give me a bit more height and less swamp lol 😆😘
My opinion on the dress is that I love it. I also love the Holly Hobbie Prairie look very much. It looks fantastic on you. Honestly, absolutely anything would look good on you because you are so lovely. I am a size 4x US and I would wear the dress. Tartan is so ideal for the holidays. Just follow your heart. If it makes you happy, wear it. If not, no guilt...modify or donate. I spent too many decades wearing clothes I never liked. Maybe you could try it out and see how it makes you feel. I love your videos so much. Love from Shari in Kentucky
I made this dress also and i feel the same way you do. I put elastic in the first tear but i am removing it because it does not sit at the waist and is constantly riding up and is not comfortable. Have you tried putting a leather belt with it. Thats how i wear mine for the same reason that it is a large flowy dress. Now i will have the option to wear with-or without a belt once i remove the elastic. Saying that i think the dress does not look like a nightgown and i like it on you.
It's a lovely dress and perfect for Christmas. I've named her 'Red', because that dress has personality. It does suit you and you can totally rock in it .. without the white collar which made you look Amish. I'd love a dress like Red. I'd wear her with army boots.
You know I think it looks great on you Jayne! I think your vintage style can really rock this and the colour is great on you ! It IS a voluminous dress, that’s the style and it is very popular generally. I certainly does not look like a nightie and it doesn’t need a roll neck. Have you tried it with heeled boots? I think they would make it and you, look very glamorous ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It is a bit frumpy, more like a night gown. It could be the pattern is really busy. Maybe make the bodice or skirt in a solid or black. You could try to pleats instead of gathering.
I think the Wilder gown is polarising, we love it or hate it. I recall the troubles Jay from the Camden Stitch had with this pattern. I would ask you this question - what attracted you to this dress initially? When you wear the dress do you still notice and admire that which drew you to it? I think the sleeve change has altered the dress's overall silhouette. I like those sleeves too but I think the straight sleeves suited the dress better and now you might consider shortening the dress so that it can look more modern with boots or even adding a belt. I think it would look great as a belted tunic in this tartan.
Hi Kate .... I did think about what drew me to the pattern initially and you know what it was the blouse version I liked 😳 not the particularly the dress 👗 thank you for asking me this question because now I know why I’m not that enamoured with the dress ... I’m going to shorten it and perhaps change the tie to black 🧵💕😘😘😘😘😘
@@TheDressmakersCloset here's another way of wearing it that makes it look quite different - leave the ties untied and laying open. Like this example - thornberry.wordpress.com/2019/12/12/the-wilder-gown/
I like the length and the print. I think there is to much material at the neck. Is there a way to remove the tie and leaned the slit? Then u could place a button with a black velvet button loop?
Hi Eileen that is a good idea! I am still not in love with this pattern although I love the blouse version. Maybe there is too much length and fabric going on for me! Blouse vlog coming this week! Jayne x
@@TheDressmakersCloset I can't wear high necked outfits, due to 5 surgeries and a lot of scare tissue in the chest and neck. Jealous that you can. I love your videos and your style. I'm in the USA and have just started looking at Inde patterns
I actually think it looks good on you. But you wasn’t sure and that’s a big indication as to whether you will wear it often. It’s a lovely dress and I love the Bold tartan fabric. It’s the kind of dress that hides our shape whether we are large or small. You’ve lost weight Jayne, and you are attractive, so maybe make something that shows off your new shape too. The Simple sew Kate dress and top would look great on you with knee high boots and a long crocheted scarf ( as you don’t like v necks) You rock the Rosco top with jeans, but when I comes to dresses, a more slightly fitted dress would be better on you. Lovely video always 🌺
Ah thank you and you’re right I’m still getting used to being almost 3 stone lighter ... I still keep going for oversized and shapeless clothes but really must try more fitted items ... thank you for your lovely comments it’s really appreciated 🧵😘
Beautifully made but kind of frumpy. I would remove the bottom tier as others have mentioned. Or try it long but with a belt. I do love the fabric for the holidays.
I like your dress but think a few changes would help. I think if you took off the bottom tier and then added a black or what the sark color in your plaid is for the tie and make ties for the under bust area that would tie at the back it would pull it in a bit for more shaping.
Honestly I think the top bit looks great but I'd take the ruffles off and wear it with trousers. I haven't seen many versions where I have said oh wow that's great.
Hello, this is the first time I’ve seen your channel, so I’m not familiar with your style. That being said, as beautiful as the fabric is and as well made, it looks like a night gown to me. I’d love this as a gown to wear around the house. I’m going to subscribe to your channel and look forward to watching. Greetings from Oregon USA 😊🌺
Hi Stella thank you for your lovely comments.... yes it does have that nighty vibe doesn’t it .... I am going to try and adapt it a bit to see if it improves 🙄 fingers crossed 🤞🏻🧵😘
I've only recently found you, so this comment is probably moot by this date. My first impression, too big on you; and, because of the tartan, it does look somewhat like a nightie. However, I've made about 5 versions of this dress, some look better on me than others. At least one version does, I think, look like I'm wearing a nightie; but I think that has to do with the fabric. I wear this one around the house, like a day dress. Have you belted your tartan Wilder? I saw that some makers put ties on either side of the waistline to tie the garment in the back. Enjoy seeing your makes here and on Insta.
Hi so glad you found me ….. yes your totally right with the tartan fabric and that dress is on the recycle pile …. I do love the blouse version so much though xxxx
I'm sorry , but to me it looks like what we in the States call a Granny gown, which is a night gown. I think it has to with the plaid and the bottom ruffle. I love the top you are wearing, so glad you saved it.
I think the dress suits you style-wise, but may benefit from being shortened a bit. Just 6-7" shorter would show a bit of boot or cute shoe and give it a more dress-look and less nightgown look. The color is truly fab on you.
I think that it's lovely on you, but if you're really not feeling it, is it too far from your usual style? Although there's a lot said about us pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones, sometimes I'd rather stay in what I like. My usual style is maxi length, ruffles etc. I'm done a maxi Roscoe a few times, and a maxi Wilder in on my list of things to make, but smock length I really struggle with feeling like a sack of spuds! It's too lovely not to be worn, would you be better cutting it off to your more usual smock length? It really is a lovely colour and neckline on you, it would be shame to not get wear out of it .
Yes I’m with you on this ... it’s going to be shortened and you know what at least I know now that maxi lengths are not really my style but it’s good to try isn’t it 😊 thanks for your comments it’s a great help and means so much to speak to other like minded sewists 🧵😘😘😘🧵🧵
Hi, I know that I am late watching your video, I just can't keep up with all the vlogs and I want to watch them all! I don't think that there are many people who can wear this dress, I am surprised how popular it has been. I don't dislike the pattern, just think that it is very limited, I certainly couldn't wear it being only 5ft. 2in! That being said, I don't think that it was too bad on you. Probably all the fabric wafting around your knees made you uncomfortable. Thanks for doing these videos.
Hi Christine, yes you are right. I wore it again on Christmas Day without doing any alterations as I wanted to see how I felt wearing it all day. Actually I kind of liked it in the end but if I made it again it would be shortened quite a bit. Jayne x
Love your videos, just started watching. I would shorten the bottom layer off to just below the knee. wear with tights and boots. I would also be tempted to add a plain red ruffle below knee. It's too much tartan for that style of dress. If you like the length how about a plain red bodice to break the tartan up, then make & add a tartan broach.
Good idea with the tiers and breaking up the tartan ... I’m toying with adding a black tie and some black accessories as well as shortening it too ... thank you for your comments so much it’s a great help 🧵😘
I honestly don’t know why that pattern has been so popular. I would look like a Victorian granny in a workhouse in it. I suspect that everyone would look better in something else because it is so shapeless. You are a gorgeous mature woman who needs to rock those curves in something else. Please don’t be offended. I’m on your side!
I made this dress yesterday and have to say it was awful on me. I really did look more like a 100 year old granny. Now in the fabric bin ready to recycle 😐
I have issues with the wilder gown as I really don’t see why everyone thinks it’s so great. I think it’s really frumpy, it certainly isn’t my style. Maybe it would be better shorter with boots. I just think the whole design looks like a sack of spuds. Such a shame because the fabric is so gorgeous and Christmassy. Usually love your makes but not this one. Sorry 😐 x
Sarah I’m with you on this one .... I just felt like a shapeless sack of spuds as you say 🤣 it’s going to be chopped shorter that’s for sure I really appreciate your comments thank you 🧵😘😘😘😘
Hi Janice, you are so right .... I'm still working on this pattern though as I think a few tweeks might make it better for me .... I'm doing a Wilder Gown Blouse pattern hack vlog coming soon Jayne x
My opinion. It's too long. Shorten the first tier and bring the ruffle to just below your knees. Wear with tights and boots, it does look light a winter flannel night gown now. The fabric is lovely.
Hi Jayne I think it looks lovely, but if your not feeling it I’d chop it into a tunic length so that you get more wear. I love the fabric choice 💖
Thanks Mel, I think I'm going to try to shorten the bottom tier first and wear with my black heeled clogs for a bit of height to see if that works .... here's hoping Jayne x
