Damals war die Enduro-Philosophie die: Alles was an einem Motorrad NICHT verbaut und montiert war, konnte nicht kaputt gehen, konnte nicht verloren gehen, addierte nicht zum Gesamtgewicht und kostete nichts. Das hat sich zum großen Teil sehr geändert. Bei kaum einer modernen und Enduro die ich Heute kenne, könnte man ausser bei einer Reifen- oder Kettenpanne noch etwas selbst reparieren! Es sind Hightech Maschinen die vollgepackt mit Elektronik und Assistenzsystemen sind. Allerdings muss man auch sehen das die Herstellungsqualität, die Fahrwerkskomponenten, die Bremsen, und alle wesentlichen Teile sehr viel besser geworden sind.

These guys were adventurers who took it on without trucks full of mechanics and spare parts, state of the art mobile workshops and a massage for the riders at the end of the stage.
Yeah, I agree. But I am watching the Dakar 2018 now and I don't see this type of get out there and do it mentality. I just see good riders and drivers, but so much money behind them that it has killed the adventure.
Watch Lyndon Poskitt doing the Malle Moto of Dakar. He's a top rate mechanic, boss rider and true gentleman all in one package. His Races2Places series shows so much more of what he's like.
Todays pampered Poodles that do this have every little risk, Heli's, GPS, Purpose built vehicles, service centres, cakewalk compared to this. None of them would last the first day in these circumstances.
The only way to ride in Africa is with a crowd.....rode several times down to the Cape of Good Hope and will never forget it. This was back when sex was safe and motorcycles were dangerous....LOL
For me, DAKAR no longer has the same flavor. The real PARIS DAKAR, with real pilots, or almost all of them are amateurs, who do not have a factory assistance which dismantles and reassembles the vehicle every evening. Now! When you watch a report on TV it only talks about the first 10, the others, the real adventurers, there are not even 30s of images. (oh yes, when there is a death it's sad isn't it ???)
