  • Apologies for the long wait. I worked on this track for the entire eight months since last my last update and it was stuck in some serious writers block. First, I am not a big fan of the original track. The harsh strings setting the rhythm in the original, the revolving round, and the reuse of the main theme just made everything feel too repetitive. I decided to just not bother with the last section. Second, I decided not to use any gimmicky instruments, and just stick with the traditional orchestra setup. No piano either. By dealing with a softer, at times slower piece, I needed to spend exponentially more time getting each note nuance to sound right, as they would be under much more scrutiny to a listener. I basically took away the usual tricks I use to mask the imperfections of my orchestral samples, and this was such a headache to deal with. On black friday I went online and bought a ridiculous amount of new orchestral libraries that I anticipate will make my life easier in the future (they are not featured in this track).
My two big reference tracks to draw from for this were the Distant Worlds orchestration of Final Fantasy VI Phantom Forest, and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. Phantom Forest in particular I feel does such a good job of evoking the mood of a mysterious forest, and if you close your eyes, you can kind of picture when each instrument flies in and leaves, are like all the lush vegetation stretching to infinity and animals running around everywhere. Pizzicato strings sound much better for the rhythm, and can be pulled back more to give space for the rest of the instruments. The nutcracker shared a similar instrumentation, and I especially like how groups of instruments would just swell in and then leave. Everywhere is just teeming with life. If you were to explore a dense forest on your own, you can look choose where to turn your head, where to approach, where to focus your attention on, see something completely unique. So to imitate that, which toby fox has also accomplished with the round, is you can in the same way focus your ears on listening to a particular instrument, and they are playing their own melody or motif. I try at times to have either a counter-melody, or just basic riffs and chord progressions that if you were to isolate, could sound good on their own. A lot of times I've mixed them all the way down, to the point where you might not really hear it clearly at all, but the knowledge that they're there is satisfying to me.
I guess another big change I should talk about is the overall melancholic and sorrowful tone in my version that's way more pronounced. The sad strings and bright flutes were basically the two things in toby fox's original that I did enjoy, and just speaking musically, I just didn't like that it got more cheerful when it transitioned to the main theme at the end. To fit the scarlet forest better, he probably should have made the strings a bit more happier and mischievous, but he didn't and so I took them and ran with it in the opposite direction. I altered the notation a bit in my version, expanded the middle, and wrote a new ending that just makes you want to cry. It's great!
Deltarune Orchestrated will be available on iTunes/Spotify upon completion of the album.

Lol the description makes me feel a bit self conscious, since I'm not well-versed in music theory at all and Scarlet Forest is one of my favourites in the ost.
I really like this cover though, it is much more dynamic than the minute-long loop that is the original.

I don't think that it's more intellectual to dislike this song than to like it. I know a lot of music theory, and still liked Scarlet Forest a lot. It's just a matter of opinion, and doesn't reflect on you at all.

I can definitely hear the Tchaikovsky influence! Now I'd love to see a ballet piece choreographed to this arrangement (I was definitely imagining one in my head)! I also feel like you've somehow connected this piece more to the original Undertale mood, with its mix of bittersweet and epic elements. Great work!

I find this track so incredible because the first thing I thought of when listening to this upon listening to it again was when I watched the ballet in the west end in London. The production I watched was indeed the Nutcracker, which I watched almost 8 years ago at quite a young age, having almost completely forgotten the music that played. This track brought back an 8 year old memory. Absolute perfection.

That was a good call purchasing new libraries for Black Friday.
Your orchestration is magnificent here and the fact that you managed to extend this piece is absolutely insane. I'm loving the woodwinds and their passages here. You're very right when you say that the woodwinds add a very unique color to the orchestra. They have such a distinct timbre and it's very much noticeable.
Additionally, I love how you've gone above and beyond, even citing Tchaikovsky's the Nutcracker. Also, your ability to characterize certain types of writing for different ensembles to emulate emotions is spectacular. I love what you were doing with the mischievous strings and then that ending. It's sublime.
This, to me, is a testament to your growth and expanded knowledge from when you were doing the Link's Awakening re-orchestration. The production value is great and I respect you even more for this one. This was very much well worth the wait.
    Thank you for this Jeremiah.

You have a very good and very deliberate sense of dramatic progression, and your orchestral textures are solid and beautiful. I appreciate that you didn't hide the limitations of the digital samples, and gave the music itself priority notwithstanding.
I also like that you gave prominence to the counterpoint (what you called each instrument playing their own melody), which is something often kicked to the background in rearrangements, when in pieces like this should be brought to the forefront because it's the very thing than enriches the music. The fact that you know what instruments to give which lines to in the texture is also praiseworthy.
The only note I would have is be careful with overestimating the volume of woodwinds if you write for a live performance, as without doubling they are easily drowned by the swelling strings and horns.
I'm almost 5 years late, but I've only just come across this, and I love it. Keep it up!

This. is. BLASPHEMY. And calling back to the four years ago date, it has only gotten around 140k views. RUclips's algorithm is a cruel and unruly beast.

You are a pro, you know to place all your Instruments in the acoustic room, you know how you should use all the many and different intruments that make your orchester complete. Admittedly in the time since my first comment I've had relatively few opportunities to actually play D&D, but in place of that I've found a genuine enjoyment of building fictional settings, coming up with interesting ideas for places and events, and finding creative ways to fit them together. I've been working on one main project in that time, but it's evolved so much over the years that many of the ideas this song originally inspired aren't even a part of the setting anymore.

A beautiful piece, quite a bit more enjoyable than the original. The original felt sort of tone deaf and I believe this version fits the area much better.

I am in love with your arrangements and have been listening to them for about a year plus. But after realizing there are only a handful of orchestral arrangements for a certain song that is very important to me I was just wondering if you would like to take a request. The song in question is The Grand Finale/In the Final from Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story. If you aren’t taking recommendations I understand as these things take a lot of work (especially Scarlet Forest).

quite honestly, I'm not a fan of this arrangement. Personally, it feels like it loses the charm of the original, and the additions don't really capture the character that the original had. In one part it felt very much like the turning point in a work made for a huge face-off.(not really sure how to describe it) It's not bad though. You really do hear the influences of Tchaikovsky.
